Editors News In all this year we have had a pretty good summer. With plenty of water rain to keep our crops growing and plenty of sun to keep us warm. I do hope those terrible windy days did not do too much damage for anyone. I have noticed the nights are drawing in. Funny how it suddenly creeps up us on us Autumn. I hope your are all busy cutting back your roses and picking the last of your crop before Mr Frost comes to visit. I had a request to put back in the useful numbers, so I have, they can be found towards the back of the magazine and I will keep them there. Any other numbers you would like me to add just shout. On the 23rd August True Speed sent me an email with an update as to how they are doing with the connection. “Thank you for your patience whilst we build your network, we fully appreciate it has taken longer than originally anticipated to get you connected. Currently, private land access is causing delays in the building process, meaning we're unable to provide a specific go live date until this has been resolved. We understand how frustrating this is for you and can only apologise for the delay. With this in mind, we antici- pate your engineering work should be completed before the end of Q4 this year and your connection will follow shortly after”. Well I would like to thank all those in the parish that volunteer to put on all the great events we have. It takes a lot of time and effort to or- ganise these events and it is so love- ly to have so many different types. It is great to meet others in the par- ish and put a face to a few names. The organisers are always looking for more volunteers and ideas. If you have any spare time or have any great ideas or a new club or event you would like to put on but need help. Then let them know direct or me and I will pass your ideas on.

St. Mary’s Church News Letter Writing in the sunshine on August Bank Holiday, just after watching Ben Stokes winning the Test match it is hard to focus on October and Novem- ber. When you read this the school will have settled well into the new term, and like us be looking forward to Harvest Time. The staff and chil- dren will be coming across the road to celebrate and give thanks for another year. Farming and wildlife are an important part of village life in Meare and Westhay and while we need to give thanks to God for His gifts at all times, it is especially so at this time of year. The Church Room kitchen has been re-equipped and decorated by the “ Big Breakfast Team” and the committee is most grateful for their planning and work. It is gratifying that others are sharing the load in maintenance of the 120 year old building. The floor has also been re-sanded and sealed during the summer break. It is used most days. Why not join us for a cuppa Friday Morning There will be a Village Harvest Ser- vice during October followed by a shared lunch. The Remembrance Sunday Service will be at the Memo- rial at 10.50am, followed by a Service in Church. Anne and Hilary, Churchwardens. 10

Gin Tasting event The Gin tasking event will take place at 7:30pm on 12th October at Meare Church Room. You will need to purchase your ticket in advance. The ticket price is £15 for Meare & Westhay residents, £20 for non-residents. Price includes selection of Gins for you to try. Please email [email protected] to reserve your tickets now as tickets will be limited. Meare Church Rooms Has a New Kitchen… MWFT have been working hard over the past few months to improve the kitchen facilities. This is what it used to look like….. There was no extraction, so when cooking the kitchen would become very hot and the steam had made the ceiling mouldy. The cooker didn’t work properly and there was- n’t enough electric sockets. Thank you to Syscon Ltd, aka John Nicholson who kindly funded the install of a new cooker hood, re-wired the elec- trics, installed new sockets and re- positioned the wall cupboard. Thank you to Martin & Caroline Sander- son and Teresa James for removing and re -fitting the units to make room for the new oven, in their precious spare time. Most importantly, we would like to thank all the supporters of the MWFT, for at- tending our events and enjoying our Lazy Sunday Breakfasts, as without you, this would not have been possible. We are pleased to let you know that just under £2000 of the money we have raised went towards the new oven and appliances, that can now be enjoyed by the entire village, while using the Church Rooms. We hope that you continue to support our events, and look forward to greeting you at our next Lazy Sunday Breakfast on the 15th September. Meanwhile we hope you enjoy the new kitchen facilities during your events x 12

I cannot bring myself to throw the picture away. Please ring me if you know anything. Thank you I have an update on Ray Adlam’s picture from the June/July issue. The son of the main girl in the picture rang to say its his mother. His father still lives in the village today. Please ring me again with your number so that I can talk to you about more details as I couldn’t hear the message properly.

Meare and Westhay Ladies Social Club Go Walking Our group usually arranges a walk and a pub supper for our August meet- ing. Paula Ruddock organised the walk and she chose Coombe Hill, which was just perfect. Several of us went on the walk and others joined us at the pub, the Street Inn, for the meal. As you can see from the photograph it turned out to be a really lovely summers evening, perfect for our stroll through the woods. When we stopped to admire the view, Paula produced some Ginger Wine so with a little tipple to warm our hearts before we completed our walk.

The interesting part of the evening was that having cho- sen to eat at the Street Inn, mainly as it has lots of parking spaces and is on the way home, we had a call from the lady we were dealing with to say that they were changing hands on the day, 15th. Slight panic but the new owner got in touch and we decided to proceed with our original plan. It all turned out well and we spent a good 2 hours eating and socialising. We were the first group to eat at the pub under the new ownership and Cyril, the landlord, was very at- tentive and amusing. Service and food was not to be faulted.

For anyone interested in joining us, The Meare and Westhay Ladies Social Club meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month and you will see our pro- gramme advertised in the Parish magazine. Kim Jenkins

Pass It Forward Last month I was contacted by a gentleman from Signposting NHS. He rang to talk to me about members of our Parish who feel isolated. Wheth- er its because they have a disability, are now unable to drive or have no family or friends around them. If you find yourself in this situation it must be very hard to cope with. Losing your independence or a loved one can make you feel very lonely and afraid. Living in a village like ours it must be terrible if you find yourself unable to go out to places and with the lack of government funding now days a lot of services have been cut. Our bus service is not the best and I have never really thought about it as a driver. If you have children and are unable to drive, after school the bus service is almost non assistant so if you wanted to take your children out there is no way of doing this. Thanks to a lot of volunteer work, we now have lots of events happening in Meare and Westhay, but have you ever thought about what it would be like to walk into one of these events on your own, not knowing anyone. I am writing this asking if anyone has any ideas on how we can include our neighbours in our events? How we can get people out and about? Is there a taxi company in the village who can help out on events days/evenings. Does anyone know of any groups offering days out or meeting places. Please let me know. If you have no way of getting out and about let me know. I am not giving any guarantees but maybe we could try and ar- range a lift for you. I have also found a couple of number for discounted community busses one of which is the Slinky Bus the other for hospital appointments. If you have an English National concessionary travel pass these can also be used. You will need to show your pass every time you travel. Student County tickets are also valid. You will need to register first, but once registered you can ring them 2 weeks in advance to book transport. For hospital appoint- ments the number for this is 01749 880613. For the Slinky Bus, again you will need to register and book 2 weeks in advance, it is only in the Meare/Westhay area on a Wednesday’s for dis- counted travel to Street, Wells or Glastonbury. It may be worth a call to see if they can help. All of these services are on a first come first served basis. This contact number is 01749880482. I will put a leaflet in Meare Village Hall and Westhay Hall for all to read.

Meare Resident to do Abseil Challenge Tom Gray of Bramble Close, Meare is taking part in SOS Africa Charity 124ft Free Fall Abseil from Wells Cathedrals North West Tower. Tom who has lived in Meare for around 5 years, with his children, was first made aware of the Shepton based charity, SOS Africa, when his partner Hel- en started volunteering in the Shepton Charity shop. The SOS Africa chari- ty is a small UK based grassroots child sponsorship organisation ,which has invested 100% of your donations in the education and care of African chil- dren since 2003. This terrifying abseil will be a challenge for all those taking part but for Tom it is also another personal challenge he has chosen to push himself with, as Tom is registered blind. At the age of 16 Tom went to bed with what he thought was a normal head- ache but when he woke he could not see. His never regained his eye sight fully again. He has the help of glasses but they still leave him with very blurred and limited vision. When I was sitting talking to him on his couch he was wearing his glasses and he could only make me out as a blurred im- age. He has volunteered for charity groups and to support other people with physical and learning difficulties and plays football with a local disabil- ities team. Please support Tom with his fund raising. He’s abseil will take place on 29th September 2019 and abseil events will continue until the 5th October. (see website for details). If you would like to sponsor Tom his sponsor ship form will be in Meare village hall until Saturday 5th October.

Traffic In Our Villages Although we are still enjoying the hazy late summer sunshine the fresher mornings remind us that autumn is just around the corner and that we are less than two months away from the clocks going back on the 27th of Octo- ber. The shorter days can bring a number of issues when navigating the working day, but our rural roads present a more immediate problem in that the early onset of darkness while many of us are still going about our busi- ness means more traffic on the roads at dusk or in darkness. Many of the lanes around our villages are narrow, some have no pavements, and the majority are unlit. This wasn’t so much of a problem thirty, or even twenty years ago, but now we have more cars, they’re bigger, and they’re faster. These potential issues are exacerbated by the fact that, legally, the speed limit on a large percentage of these roads is the national sixty miles per hour. With this in mind we should all be more aware that around every corner in the countryside, every back lane, and every road across the Levels there could be pedestrians in the road. Speed limits are limits, not targets. Road traffic accidents involving pedestrians are a sword that cuts two ways. Many people are killed or seriously injured every year in the UK, and while this has an obvious effect on the family and friends of the pedestrian or cy- clist in question, many people forget the ramifications for the person at the wheel of the car or HGV. We all use our cars to get to and from work, and many of us drive cars, vans, or lorries as part of our jobs. Losing a licence to drive is more than just an inconvenience. For most of us not being able to get across the region to work or not being able to legally drive our van, truck, or tractor could bring about the end of employment in many industries. The end of employment means loss of in- come, the potential to not be able to cover the mortgage or school fees, and the spectre of potentially life changing circumstances. To this end I have launched a project to raise awareness of the problem of inappropriate speed limits on our rural roads. For more information on the Safer Lanes for Somerset project please visit my website via the link below, and I look forward to seeing you out and about in our beautiful Somerset countryside. Men’s Shed Win Award

National Awards Win for Men’s Shed At the UK Men’s Shed Association Annual Shedfest on the 3rd September the Street Men’s Shed were runners up for the ‘Shed of the Year’ award and won the ‘Health & Well- being Project of the Year’ award for their work in the local community with older men who have suffered from Bereavement, Mental Health issues and Depression and as men are less likely to talk about their problems and this can mean that the help that they need is difficult to find. In Late August the TV presenter Kate Humble visited the shed to research her new book due out next year, Kate spent over two hours talking to the members about what they felt being elderly in the modern throw away word, All shed members who were there said they would have a lasting im- pression of Kate’s visit.

Keeping Our Footpaths Open Alan Wren and his group of helpers have been hard at work keeping our footpaths open. He has done a fantastic job but needs your help. Alan writes “We are gradually making our Parish footpaths more accessible to all with new gates installed and the bridge repaired in the fields south of Millbatch, that's three less stiles to have to clamber over. Many thanks to Rights of Way team for providing the new equipment and to the volunteers from Mendip Ramblers Associa- tion for the installation work. I am still looking for volun- teers to help keep our net- work of footpaths open. This is not an onerous task and if you are already walking the paths you could keep an eye out for defects and cut back vegeta- tion as necessary, that is all that is required. Please contact me if you wish to help." Thanks Alan ([email protected])
