PARNELL 192/7 dec. Tim McIntosh 52*, Ben Horne 28, David Goddard 32, Henry King 31 FOW 3, 12, 18, 65, ?, ? & 110/9 Tom Talbot 32* RESULT: MATCH DRAWN – 1st Innings win to Parnell

DAY 1. – Skipper Dave Goddard returned to the side, won the toss and inserted University who got away to a flyer, Marc Ellison put the ball away neatly through mid several times and the runs mounted quickly. Silva, 2 out of 22, was bowled by Rav and Ganesh snared Ellison shortly before drinks. Following the break it all happened. Henry came on and in a great spell had their high scoring pro., Wells, lbw, then both Dhadwal and Finn Allen (Auckland U19s) caught behind by Ben Horne. 62/2 at drinks had become 112/7 at Lunch.

But we did not capitalise. Flett, aided by Zaveri added 29 and, worse, with young Josh Fisher (also Auckland U19s) took the total to 183. Henry had had a sizzler missed by his Skipper at 2nd slip but for the most part our pace attack now looked tired and innocuous. Dave, really, should have brought himself on earlier but, when he did, he sorted it out very quickly by bowling both Fisher and Flett.

Rav opening up against University in brilliantsunshine. We are now into our last days of “camping” at Orakei Domain. Not easy to fulfil the Club is the Hub obligations of catering without a clubroom and we look forward to our return to Shore Road mid january. Meantime, Groundsman Dave Keane needs to be congratulated on the standard of pitches that he has produced at Orakei. Again, he has had to work under very difficult condition with only a cramped container for storage. The container also contained the cover, hessian, marquee, tables, pickets, scoreboards and heaps of paraphenalia let alone his mower, marking equipment and tools. Last Saturday’s pitch had a good covering of grass and gave help to the bowlers all day. Never easy but, as a couple of the University batsmen showed, and then Ben Horne and, most particularly Tim, with patience and watchfulness survival was quite possible.

Ganesh – looking sharp this season – 4/42 Henrys first Premier 2 Day wicket

And he is congratulated

Then twice more, the Henry King/Ben Horne combination – well deserved return of 3/40

Tom appealling unsuccessfully Dave – finally bowled and just needed 3.1 overs to end the innings

Our turn to bat – 38 overs left in the day and disaster struck quickly. Sam Varcoe was bowled without scoring, Ben Rainger lbw and Jesse caught – 3/18. Through all this Tim watched the ball closely, played each ball on it’s merits, exhibited great patience and, to sum it up, played the innings of a true professional.

Ben Horne joined him on Jesse’s departure and he, too, played a very disciplined knock. Ben looked totally secure but was lbw to Jeet most unexpectedly. Then Tom Hills stuck for a while but it was left to a resolute Skipper to partner Tim through till stumps – tense times, another wicket would have really opened the gate.

Tim McIntosh – saved the day by through to close of play for 61*

Ben Rainger on the defensive But it was the Skipper who helped Tim bat out to stumps Day 1. ended with Parnell 140/6 in reply to AUCC’s 188

DAY 2. Brilliantly fine and all expectation for an exciting day’s cricket. Before the start, the Sky TV crew interviewed Tim McIntosh for the ‘Cricket Show’ and Guy Harper brought his father, Gavin, to see the team that he played for, pre Christmas, last season.

Tim – seldom has an innings of his been so valuable – 71* Henry, 31* - saw us to a 1st innings lead & the declaration

Skipper Dave was dismissed quite early and Tim was joined by Henry King. Henry, the regular AGS no. XI the year previously, had the good sense to seek Trotty’s advice on batting and had regular sessions with his Coach in the TJC. And the tuition came good last Saturday – Henry batted like a trooper and produced several cover drives worthy of any top order batsman. AUCC’s 188 was passed without further loss and the 6 points for the 1st innings win secured, Dave declared immediately to see what the opposition could do.

And we soon found out - Marc Ellison was in outstanding form. Three on drives to the boundary in quick succession set the scene and our attack was pounded. Dave then looked to buy /help University to an early declaration. Tom Talbot turned his arm over (and secured a wicket) and Charles Bevin, making his 2 Day debut, also bowled. The declaration finally came leaving Parnell a target of 227 in 37 overs. By this time Ellison had hit a very smart ton and some doubt was raised whether the target was reasonable.

Tom Talbot (left) and Charles Bevin were given the ball

We set off in lively fashion but Ben Horne’s dismissal rather dampened the outlook. University had a sharp attack – Antony Ireland (28 ODI for Zimbabwe plus County cricket), absent the previous week, led the way. He was strongly supported by young Josh Fisher, Auckland U19’s quickie and then Wells, another County bowler. They bowled with great heart and their fiery spell tore through us.

Tim and Jesse went plus the youngsters, Ben Rainger and Charles Bevin. David Goddard, too - Tom Hills’ dismissal was just about the last straw – but, with the innings disintergrating, Tom Talbot held firm and batted with great discipline and heart . Joined by Ganesh with still 13 overs left, they put their heads down, weathered the pace, looked comfortable against spin – Vishy Jeet introduced surprisingly late made no headway.

Ireland returned – one over to go. Ganesh played at a shortish, lifting – caught at 2nd slip. Rav to the crease – 5 balls to weather, dead bats a couple, others he watches through to the ‘keeper. And the last ball – he dead bats.

Result – just another draw! But a wonderful game of drama filled cricket and all due to Tom, Ganesh and Rav for holding on.

Tom Talbot – calm, assured and elegant, a match saving 32*

Ganesh who stayed 12 overs with Tom Talbot Rav – called on to face the last 5 balls, which he did with aplomb!

Cricket Express T20 Competition

16 December PARNELL vs. NORTH SHORE Vauxhall Road (a)

PARNELL 138/7 (20) Tim McIntosh 21 (22), Ben Horne 51 (30), Jesse Simpson 31 (34 NORTH SHORE 139/8 (20) Ganesh Ratnasabapaty 2/29 (3), Henry King 2/18 (4), Jesse Simpson 2/7 (2) RESULT: NORTH SHORE WON BY 2 WICKETS

Unfortunately Parnell was eliminated from the Cricket Express T20 Championship on account of losing to North Shore CC. We won the toss, batted and got away to an excellent start. Tim and Ben looked very assured but when Tim was run out for 21 and Ben, after just reaching 50, was beautifully caught low down at mid wicket, the wheels fell off our innings. Jesse tried to hold the fort but the rest crumpled leavint a target of only 139.

Noth Shore had a flying start – 17 off Rav’s only over but Ganesh and Henry pulled it back and Jesse chimed in with two very cheap wickets. Then, needing to defend 26 in the final 2 overs but failed to do so – 12 and 14 coming off those overs. Disappointing but all credit to North Shore.

12 & 19 December PARNELL vs. KUMEU Kumeu Domain

KUMEU 144 (48.5) Tom Urry 3/26 (12), Stu Wood 4/53 (16) & 44 (20.3) Rudi Bisschoff 10.3 1 25 6 Billy Sanger 10 2 16 4 PARNELL 163 Blue Hamel 27, Simon Wood 47, W Webster 5/33 & 30/0 Justin Rosenberg 20*

RESULT: PARNELL WON OUTRIGHT BY 10 WICKETS

A resounding win after two excellent bowling performances. All credit to the returning Tom Urry, backed by Stu’s effort and then truly devastating spells in Kumeu’s 2nd innings by Rudi and Billy. Batting leaves a bit to be desired though but a great way to conclude the first half of the season – very much on top of the table in both the One and two Dayers.

Thirds – 2B Grade

12 & 19 December PARNELL vs. SPARTANS (??)

SPARTANS 179 Gavin Poole 5/?) & 146 (50) Mike Gedye 3/36 (13), Gavin Poole 3/24 (6) PARNELL 142 Tom Landrigan 31, Gavin Poole 32, & 183/? (25) Matthew Vercoe-Curtis 42, Thomas Landrigan 52

RESULT: PARNELL WON OUTRIGHT

Tom Landrigan (1st Day) and Skipper Peter Hickman reporting:Spartans won the toss and elected to bat, much to our surprise on a bowler friendly green seamer. Our openers didn’t hit their lines as well as they should have which gave the Spartans a quick start to their innings. Elliot Jaffe took the first wicket which seemed to wake everyone up before Gavin Poole made a vital double breakthrough including the opener who had pumped us all over the park. We made steady inroads into the oppositions batting order from then on and eventually had them all out for 179. Gavin Poole was by far the best of our bowlers taking a 5 wicket bag. He was ably supported by Christian Wylie and the ‘injured’ Elliot Jaffe.

Batting wise, it started awfully for us and we were 10-4 within the first 5 overs. Some counter-hitting from Luke and stubborn resistance from the lower order, particularly Gavin(32), Jaffe (14)and Wylie(11) saw us limp through to 140-9 at stumps. Not our best day of cricket by far and clearly gave us all a wake-up call to improve our standards the following week. Tom Landrigan top scored with 31 at the top of the order.

The following week saw us lose 1st innings by 37 runs, not the standard that we set ourselves, but it could have been a lot worse. In response, the bowling attack ran through them for 146 in 50 overs. 6 different bowlers were used, all of them picking up at least one wicket. Mike Gedye was the pick, 13 overs 3 wickets for 36 runs, Gavin Poole had an off day, not taking his expected 5for, instead taking 3 for 24 from 6 overs. The rest of the wickets were shared between P Hickman, C Wylie, E Humpries and J Nuttal.

With the lead of 37 included, we were set 183 in 26 overs, a tough task but our capable batsmen were up to the task. T Landrigan went out with the the quote ‘I’ll have a lick’, we still have no idea what that means, but he and M Vercoe- Curtis finished on 52 and 42 respectably. So more ‘licks’ would be greatly accepted, this finished a great year for this opening pair. K Lunow-Haldane V Sirohi and J Milne chipped in with 19, 19 and 8. The innings was finished with L O’Toole and M’ Gedye seeing us home with one over to spare, finishing on 17no and 18no.

This game finishes what has been a great year for the 3rd side, the only dropped points came in this game, leading us to finish 1st on the One Day table, and 2nd in the Two Day competition. May It continue into next year. Stand out performances include G Poole who finished with 25 wickets this year and M Vercoe-Curtis who 276 runs so far, averaging nearly 40.

In reply we had a great start with Abrar scoring a 50 and Nirmal scored an unbeaten 112 to take us through in just 34 overs with the loss of only 4 wickets. GRADE 3. PARNELL JAGUARS vs. AUCC BARRACUDAS - WIN TO PARNELL JAGUARS

Phillip Ashworth reports: Another fine but windy morning at Orakei Domain to see the Jaguars play against the visiting Barracudas.

Aidan from the Jaguars won the toss and elected to field first. The opening partnership for the Barracudas scored an impressive 35 runs and were looking good to make a big first innings total. But up stepped the gun bowlers from the Jaguars which strangled their next partnership to only 10 runs. In fact the only runs scored were wides - something to work on :-).

Not to be outdone by the opposition Seth and Rohan opened the Jaguars batting with a well hit 34 runs. Mac and Will followed them with 17 runs and were unlucky to get run out a few times but great to see them trying to score. Both played some nice straight shots and were unlucky to not find more gaps. This allowed the Jaguars to take a first inning lead of only 6 runs,

It was now time for the Barracudas to bat again and Rielly got the Jaguars off to the best start by bowling a maiden which included a run out. Next up to bowl was Mac with his tricky inswingers. A fine over it was and more than helped by an outstanding catch by Rory. With more tight bowling to come including another maiden by Rohan restricted the Barracudas to only 73 runs. First up batting in the Jaguar's second innings was Rory and Rielly who for the second week in a row scored 40+ runs with Rory top scoring in the game with 22. This was followed by another nice little partnership by Aidan and Ben with 17 to allow the Jaguars to score over 100 runs.

In the end the the good teamwork in the field along with the tight bowling was enough for the Jaguars to take their second win of the season. Congratulation to Seth for Player of the Day with his tidy spell of bowling (only 6 runs scored off his 2 overs) along with some solid batting and excellent running between the wickets.

Hat Trick to Luca Mercer

Saturday, 12 December:

Luca Mercer with the Hat Trick ball Taken in a T20 on Satuday, 12 Dec. – Luca’s figures were 3/20 off 4 overs

Harper Brothers were in Town

Guy and Ian, who played for Parnell the first half of last season, were here for a few days last week. From Surrey, though Guy is at Cardiff University and Ian is completing his Masters at Barcelona. They are here with their ‘whanau’ – parents, grandfather and, from Sydney, uncles/cousins etc – to explore the .

Guy captained the Maori Oxshott team 1st XI. Ian and his Dad, Gavin, also play for Oxshott and in one game Ian hit a off only 40 balls! Photo below tells the story. Also, in his ’s role, Guy had to prepare the Club pitch – a good learning exercise and the second shot below shows him in action:

Ian – 116* off 46 balls, Oxshott vs Merrow Guy heading to prepare the pitch at Oxshott

Quiz

A good time to reintroduce the Quiz to see just how good memories are, to find whether grudges are harboured or just to remind our cross Tasman cousins that we have been rather “hard done by” over the years.

New Zealand played it’s first Test in 1929/30 and by WW 2. had played a total of 14 Tests.

QUESTIONS: 1. NZ played it’s very first Test, vs. England, in 1929/30. What season did NZ first play a Test against Australia?

a) 1930/31 b) 1938/39 c) 1945/46 1 Test won by Australia d) 1948/49 e) 1953/54 Or f) 1973/74

2. By 1970 NZ had played 105 Tests in total against 6 different countries. How many of these had been played against Australia? a) 40 NZ vs England b) 17 vs South Africa c) 9 vs West Indies d) 16 vs India e) 12 vs Pakistan ANSWER: f) 1 vs Australia our closest neighbour

In the years between 1929 and 1970, Australia played now fewer than 186 Tests: 90 vs England 44 vs South Africa 20 vs West Indies 25 vs India 6 vs Pakistan ANSWER: Just ONE vs ! By 1980/81, 10 years later, NZ had played Australia in 12 Tests.

3. Umpiring controversies have been rife in NZ/Australian Tests and ODIs. Back in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, 1980/81 season, Australia were 9 down for 261 in their 1st innings. Almost immediately no. 11, was caught behind off a short ball from . Given “” and no ball called, that no. 11 then lasted 61 balls, Doug Walters completed a century and 60 added for the 10th wicket. Eventually NZ was set 193 to win (in 143 minutes + 20 overs in the last hour) but the Test was drawn with NZ 128/6. Just 65 short - that “not out” decision off Lance Cairns’ bowling was a crucial call:

a) Who was the Australian no. 11 batsman? b) Why did Umpire RC Bailltache call “no ball” to Lance Cairn’s ball – because i) Back foot was over the line? ii) Front foot was over the line? iii) Too many fieldsmen behind square leg? Or

ANSWER: iv) The ball was intimidatory The Umpire ruled it so (using an ODI rule current at the time) despite Cairns being only a medium pacer and it being only an isolated short ball. It created considerable controversy but nothing like the uproar exactly one month later when, first, Greg Chappell was given “not out” to Martin Sneddon’s catch (umpires were both watching for “short runs”) and, then, the match ended with the “underarm incident” … ‘nuff said!!! Umpires, in those days, weren’t neutral and there was no DRS!

4. In 1987/88, in the 3rd Test (another Boxing Day Test at Melbourne), Australia needed 247 to win with a minimum of 92 overs left on the last day. Wickets fell, 23,859 spectators were at the ground, Wisden reported that TV quiz shows were cancelled, Then, at 227, the 9th wicket fell – the last pair together, 4.5 overs scheduled to be bowled. In the penultimate over an LBW appeal was turned down, the final over was played out and the Test ended in a draw. Australia 230/9, 17 short of victory, NZ one wicket short.

Who ANSWERS IN RED: a) were the two not out Australian batsmen? Craig McDermott & Mike Whitney b) survived the LBW appeal in the penultimate over? Craig McDermott c) bowled the penultimate over? Danny Morrison d) had figures of 5/109 and 5/67 in the Test? (now Sir)

Interestingly, neither the Lance Cairns “intimidation” nor the McDermott “LBW” controversies were mentioned in Wisden’s reports of these games. However, Henry Blofeld , Wisden’s correspondent for the ODI Series, described Sneddon’s catch and the underarm in full detail calling them “lamentable incidents”! Henry summed up the “underarm incident” : “Not surprisingly this prompted widespread charges of poor sportsmanship”

Three resposes to this Quiz - David Jenkins of Adelaide, the author of “The Eric Freemam Story” was 100% correct Alan Graham of Karori, first to reply, was 99% correct (missed 4 c – Danny Morrison) David Sutcliffe, 3rd in – had been away – had just one error.

Quizzes will resume in the New Year.

Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas, A Fantastic Holiday and a Ton of Runs and Heaps of Wickets In the New Year!
