THE 2020 NATIONAL PRESIDENTS' LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE GOES VIRTUAL

In late spring the National Board reluctantly made the decision to move the annual National Presidents' Leadership Con- ference online this fall due to the pandemic. Despite missing the in- person gatherings, the virtual format proved to be a success.

The conference attendees participated in interactive ice breakers and were given many of the same tips and best practices for running their chapters that the

Coronavirus has affected many lives and altered what we consider to be normal. The Chapter of Lambda Sigma at Louisiana Tech University has had a unique experience during the memorable coronavirus pandemic. Due to the uncertainty that came with having to move off-campus and take classes online, organizations on Louisiana Tech’s campus, and campuses around the country, had to pivot and make a new game plan for acquiring new members in the spring. The Dr. Ron G. Wolfe Outstanding Chapter award is given each year to the chapter that best represents the four pillars of Lambda Sigma Society: Leadership, Scholarship, Fellowship and Service.

Ron, who died on March 15 at the age of 79, exemplified leadership, fellowship and service to Lambda Sigma and a lifetime of scholarship. Our Society is stronger because of his more than 40 years of commitment and dedicated service as an advisor to chapter at Eastern Kentucky University, a member and Executive Secretary of the national board, and as our liaison to the Association of College Honor Societies.

Ron was an inspiration to many students and faculty during his career as an educator in the US and Dubai. He was a trusted advisor, colleague and friend to countless Lambda Former national board members at the 2019 President's Leadership Conference. In addition to the banner patch which is presented when the award is announced, the chapter will also receive a check for $100 to be used for a special purpose as decided by the chapter.

Ron received the Jane Price Harmon Gift of Honor at the 2017 NPLC, at which time, his wife, Ruth, was made an honorary member in recognition of her work in making the banners that many of our chapters have. At that conference, he said “My sincere wish for each of you is that you will know that persistence prevails when all else fails…that a wish is only a desire without an attempt.”

Inherent in the purposes and ideals of Lambda Sigma Society is the understanding of the importance of diversity within the organization in achieving its goals. To this end, the National Executive Board of Lambda Sigma Society encourages its member chapters to actively pursue candidates for membership who would broaden and strengthen the local chapters by providing diverse backgrounds. This diversity within the organization should serve to enhance the potential for leadership and service by acknowledging the wide range of students within the college or university and their potential to contribute to the goals of Member of ACHS since 1981 the society. Mississippi State University’s chapter of Lambda Sigma, Alpha Iota, had the incredible opportunity to working alongside Starkville Habitat for Humanity in a special project. While Habitat’s main mission is constructing affordable homes, the Alpha Iota chapter had the privilege of helping construct a community pavilion in the center of a neighborhood of Habitat houses. The vision for this pavilion is to create a safe space to gather for fellowship and fun, as well as bring to community together. Members have faithfully volunteered almost every Saturday morning since early September for the duration of the pavilion’s construction, and it will be completed within the next few weeks. This project included a variety of jobs such as shoveling, leveling, mixing concrete, drilling, and various other construction tasks. Habitat’s workers were so kind, patient, and gracious in teaching Lambda Sigma members new construction skills along the way. It has been such an incredible opportunity to be part of this project from the very beginning to the soon completion of the pavilion. While working on this fellowship space, members were also given the valuable gift of fellowship with one another. In the midst of CO-VID 19, service projects have become an even more valuable way to provide members with opportunities for fellowship.
