GODBOUT SIDELINED FOR TWO MONTHS WITH ELBOW INJURY

The University of Minnesota men's hockey program announced that senior defenseman Jason Godbout will be sidelined until the first week of February after sustaining a grade three tear to a ligament in his left elbow in Friday night's loss to Colorado College at Mariucci Arena. An MRI scan on Monday, the results of which were learned today, revealed the tear. Surgery for the injured elbow is scheduled for Tuesday, December 2.

"Jason has suffered a tear in the medial collateral ligament in his left elbow," said Dr. Robert LaPrade, a University of Minnesota team doctor who will be one of the attending surgeons at the operations along with Dr. Dan Buss. "The success rate of a full recovery from this type of injury (following surgery) is extraordinarily high, and I expect Jason will be able to make a full recovery and hopefully be ready to begin contact drills on by the first week of February." LAMANZER WILLIAMS NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-BIG TEN

University of Minnesota senior defensive end Lamanzer Williams has been selected as a first team All-Big Ten selection by both the conference coaches and media.

Williams, who last week became the first player from the University of Minnesota in 26 years to collect All-America honors when he was cited by the Football Writers Association of America, was a dominant player this past season for the Golden Gophers when he led the nation with a single-season school record 18.5 sacks.

The all-time school record holder with 23.5 career sacks, Williams set another single-season school record in 1997 with 24 tackles for loss. He also led the Golden Gophers this season with 17 quarterback hurries and a Big Ten-leading five forced fumbles. He ranked fourth on the team with 67 tackles, including 47 solos.

Senior Tutu Atwell and sophomore strong safety Tyrone Carter were second team All-Big Ten selections by both the coaches and media. One of the nation's most dangerous kick and punt returners, Atwell finished his Golden Gopher career as the all-time school leader in receptions (171), receiving yards (2,640) and receiving touchdowns (17). Equally dangerous as a kick returner, Carter finished second in the Big Ten with 143 tackles on the season, including a school record 116 solos.

Junior placekicker Adam Bailey and redshirt freshman center Ben Hamilton were honorable mention selections. A Lou Groza semifinalist in both 1996 and again this season, Bailey hit 15-of-20 field goal attempts and was a perfect 23-of-23 on PATs. Bailey, who had three makes from beyond 50 yards, tied the modem day (since 1939) all-time Big Ten single-game record with five field goals against top-ranked Penn State on Oct. 18. Hamilton started every game at center this past season and was the Golden Gophers' top offensive lineman.

LONEY NAMED GOLDEN GOPHER OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR University of Minnesota Head Football Coach Glen Mason announced today that Steve Loney has been selected as the Golden Gophers' new offensive coordinator.

The 45-year-old Loney, who will also handle the team's offensive line, comes to the U of M after three record-setting seasons as offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at Iowa State.

In Loney's first two seasons at Iowa State, the Cyclones' offense produced the most prolific tailback over two seasons in NCAA history in Troy Davis who rushed for a two-year NCAA record 4,195 yards. Troy's brother, Darren Davis, rushed for 1,005 yards in just nine games in 1997 giving the Cyclones' three straight 1,000-yard rushers under Loney. He also helped develop Tim Kohn, a two-time first-team all conference selection at offensive tackle, and center Pat Augafa, the 1995 Big Eight offensive newcomer of the year and an all-conference choice in 1996. Iowa State increased its offensive production by 20 percent during Loney's tenure in Ames. ISU ranked second in the Big 12 and 37th in the nation in passing offense in 1997 with an average of 231.9 yards per game through the air. The Cyclones ranked fourth in the Big 12 and 13th in the nation in rushing in 1996 with an average of 237.7 yards per game on the ground, which included an impressive average of 5.0 yards per carry. In 1995 Iowa State was third in the Big Eight and 15th in the country with an average of 228.5 yards per game rushing.

Prior to joining the Iowa State staff, Loney was assistant head coach/wide receivers coach at the University of Connecticut in 1994 and an offensive line coach for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals in 1993. From 1989- 92 he was the assistant head coach/offensive line coach under Earle Bruce at Colorado State. He helped lead the Rams to the Freedom Bowl in 1990, the school's first bowl appearance in 48 years.

Loney was assistant head coach/offensive line coach/special teams coordinator at The Citadel from 1984- 86 after two seasons (1987-88) at Kings High School in Ohio. He was the head coach at Morehead State in Morehead, Ky., from 1981-83, after serving as the offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at the school in 1979-80. He was the head coach at Leavenworth (Kan.) High School in 1977-78 and the offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at Missouri Western College in St. Joseph, Mo., in 1975-76.

A letterwinner on the offensive line for Iowa State during his collegiate career, Loney was a member of Head Coach Johnny Majors' 1971 Sun Bowl and 1972 Liberty Bowl teams. After earning his bachelor's degree in distributed studies from Iowa State, he launched his coaching career in 1974 at his alma mater as a graduate assistant coach under Earle Bruce while earning his master's degree in secondary school administration. Steve and his wife, Terri, have three children: Matt (20), Katie (18) and Kylan (15).

"I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Glen Mason and the job that he has done every place he's coached," Loney said. "I look forward to working in the Big Ten Conference and being a part of the turnaround that's taking place with the University of Minnesota football program."

"Steve is a proven coach with an excellent track record," Mason said. "We are very excited to have him join our staff." UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA JEW§
