The Love Won Out conferences of Focus on the Family, an evangelical religious organization, promote the message that homosexuality is both preventable and treatable. In so doing, Focus on the Family actively endorses a specific kind of sexual identity, that of an “ex- gay.” My study I asked how Focus on the Family defines the conditions of possibility for an ex- gay self. I drew on the theory of institutional selves to interrogate how the Love Won Out conferences put on by Focus on the Family narratively construct sexual identity. Institutional selves are defined as those selves produced in the service of an organization and I examined those selves produced by Love Won Out to further the political goals of Focus on the Family. My study analyzed the transcripts of the Love Won Out conferences I attended in St. Louis and Ft. Lauderdale in 2006. In addition, I examined the textual material promoted by the conference speakers, including a number of books, pamphlets, and supporting materials. Results show that to successfully promote sexual identity transformation, Love Won Out must first produce a mutable, troubled gay self. Having done so, Love Won Out supply the narrative resources necessary to recognize the causes of homosexuality, and then to manage the 8 transformation from a troubled gay self to a healed ex-gay self. More specifically, Love Won Out draw upon discourses of religion, psychotherapy and self-help. They further reinterpret the nature of the healing process such that it becomes more of a spiritual transformation than a sexual one. Focus on the Family also empowers the audience to be active agents of change themselves, and provide the interpretive tools to advocate for social change across a variety of social institutions. I argue that the ex-gay self identity has political utility outside the discursive boundaries of the Love Won Out conferences since to embrace a heterosexual identity would mean being subsumed into wider culture and thus rendered politically and socially invisible. Ex- gay keeps the message that sexuality is mutable at the forefront and therefore becomes important in the fight against the claims of gay and lesbian civil rights groups. 9 CHAPTER 1 ROOTS OF THE EX-GAY IDENTITY The homosexual activist movement … have been working to implement a plan that has as its centerpiece the utter destruction of the family. (Dobson 2004:19) [Homosexuality] is a prison that leaves many individuals feeling hopeless and abandoned … many of these individuals desperately want to be free of this same-sex attraction. I soon developed an eating disorder: I don’t have a choice in attending these sessions, I thought, but at least I can control what I eat and throw up.1 Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth, as well as adolescents questioning their gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation (“LGBTQ”) “experience significant health and behavioral health disparities. In 1999, Anne and her husband John published their autobiography Love Won Out (Tyndale by Focus on the Family.) Her new project is the first Christian book to be written exclusively about female homosexuality in nearly 15 years. The following questions and answers are taken, in part, from Anne’s book. What was your motivation for writing this book? Years ago I was looking for help as I left lesbianism, but found almost no resources. Fortunately, I was referred to a wonderful Christian counselor willing to help me work toward my goal. A few years later, I found out about Exodus International. At Exodus, I found others who had felt the tug of same-sex attraction but were experiencing real change. Bennett Advocates of “reparative therapy” employ a modified version of Judith Butler’s “normative heterosex- uality” discourse to “cure” gays and lesbians. Coupling Butler with a “coming out of homosexuality” personal narrative, reorientation texts such as Love Won Out construct a ubiquitous foundation for sexual identity and collective experience. At the text’s conclusion, a tension is produced between a constitutive conception of identity and a more traditional notion of self, grounded in a secured ontological base. These conflicting constructs are ultimately productive for performance scholars, illustrating an attempt to refigure the location of sexual identity and forge new positions of performativ- ity.     The Kid By Jeffrey Vance “The Kid” (1921) is one of Charles Chaplin’s finest achievements and remains universally beloved by critics and audiences alike. The film is a perfect blend of comedy and drama and is arguably Chap- lin’s most personal and autobiographical work. Many of the settings and the themes in the film come right out of Chaplin’s own impoverished London child- hood. However, it was the combination of two events, one tragic (the death of his infant son) and one joyful (his chance meeting with Jackie Coogan), that led Chaplin to shape the tale of the abandoned child and the lonely Tramp. The loss of three-day-old Norman Spencer Chaplin undoubtedly had a great effect on Chaplin, and the emotional pain appears to have triggered his creativ- ity, as he began auditioning child actors at the Chap- lin Studios ten days after his son’s death. It was dur- ing this period that Chaplin encountered a four-year- old child performer named Jackie Coogan at Orphe- um Theater in Los Angeles, where his father had just performed an eccentric dance act. Chaplin spent more than an hour talking to Jackie in the lob- by of the Alexandria Hotel, but the idea of using Jackie in a film did not occur to him. After he heard that Roscoe Arbuckle had just signed Coogan, Chaplin agonized over his missed opportunity.     Tips for Making GSA’s Inclusive for Youth with LGBTQ Parents There is a long history of youth with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer parents being involved with Gay Straight Alliances. In fact, the very first GSA club was started by a straight daughter of lesbian moms with her LGBT peers and teacher because she was sick of hearing homophobia comments in the hallways. She understood that anti-gay words, harassment and discrimination directly impacted her as someone with LGBTQ parents. Youth involved in COLAGE are still today actively involved in GSA clubs all over the country. Both straight-identified and LGBTQ youth who have one or more LGBTQ parents bring leadership, unique perspectives and intimate knowledge of the harmful effects of homophobia and transphobia to student clubs. At the same time, GSAs do not always acknowledge or embrace the unique experiences of LGBTQ-parented students. Ruby from California shared, “I actually started my GSA as the daughter of lesbian moms. But I was one of the only people in it who had LGBTQ parents. COLAGErs {ie. people with one or more LGBTQ parents} didn’t feel like they had a place. The emphasis was on queer youth and straight allies and it wasn’t clear where COLAGErs would fit in.” Often youth with LGBTQ parents feel that they straddle a unique position within the community. Because they may have grown up immersed in gay culture and community and because they are impacted by homophobia and transphobia in very personal and unique ways, COLAGErs often report that the term “straight ally” doesn’t feel like it fits their roles and potential contributions to GSAs and other queer organizations.

    SB 1172 (Lieu) - Sexual Orientation Change Efforts Introduced February 22, 2012, Chaptered September 30, 2012 This bill prohibits a mental health provider from engaging in sexual orientation change efforts with a patient under 18 years of age, regardless of the willingness of a patient, patient's parent, guardian, conservator, or other person to authorize such efforts. According to the author's office, the intent of this bill is to limit deceptive therapies that are harmful to minors by mental health providers. This bill seeks to provide awareness of the alternatives to and the potential harmful effects of sexual orientation change therapies while also protecting children from these treatments. The author states "this so-called reparative therapy, conversion therapy or reorientation therapy is scientifically ineffective and has resulted in much harm." This bill seeks to provide protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth by preventing these types of therapies that are potentially dangerous as well as making adults aware of the potential harms associated with sexual orientation change therapies. Specifically, this bill: 1. Defines "mental health provider" as a physician and surgeon specializing in the practice of psychiatry, a psychologist, a psychological assistant, a licensed marriage and family therapist, a registered marriage and family therapist, intern, or trainee, an educational psychologist, a licensed clinical social worker, an associate clinical social worker, a licensed professional clinical counselor, or a registered clinical counselor, intern, or trainee. 2. Defines "sexual orientation change efforts" as practices by mental health providers that seek to change orientation or reduce or eliminate sexual or romantic attractions, feelings, or behaviors because those attractions, feelings, or behaviors are directed toward persons of a particular sex or both sexes.
