6 Upton-Mendon Town Crier - 25th Anniversary Year March 17, 2017 Upton News Races for Selectman and School Committee in Upton By Michelle Sanford Staff Reporter/Columnist Three names will appear on the Town Election ballot for Upton’s Board of Selectman’s seat. Shawn Craig, Stephen Matellian, and Brett Simas have all completed and returned their nomination papers for the three year seat. Richard Robinson had initially taken out papers but decided not to run for the office. Incumbent James Brochu announced he did not plan to run again. Upton’s Town Election is scheduled for May 1. Another race to be decided by voters includes the three year seat for Mendon Upton Regional School Committee. Incumbent Philip DeZutter has returned his nomination papers. DeZutter will be challenged by newcomer Edward Darragh. A number of other candidates on the ballot are incumbents and are running unchallenged. They include David Loeper for Town Moderator for one year, James Earl for Assessor of Taxes for three years, Richard Desjardins for Board of Health for three years, Richard Gazoorian for Recreation Commission for three years, Charlotte Carr and Frances Gustman for Library Trustees for three years, and Margaret Carroll for Planning Board for five years. There are several newcomers who are seeking elected seats and are also running unchallenged. They are Richard McGuire for Finance Committee for three years, the incumbent is Stephen Matellian; Meghan Condon for Library Trustee for three years, the incumbent is C. John Minnucci; Richard Porter for Recreation Commission for two years, the incumbent is Deb Amorelli; Jeanne Oliver for Board of Commissioners of Trust Funds for three years, the incumbent is Steve McCaw; and William Palmer for Cemetery Commission for three years; that position was vacant. The other one year Cemetery Commission seat remains vacant with no candidates. Candidates have until March 29 to withdraw their names. Residents have until April 11 to register to vote in the Town Election and the May 4 Annual Town Meeting. The Town Clerk’s office will be open on April 11 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Polls will be open during the May 1 Annual Town Election from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Nipmuc Regional High School gymnasium.
