Since the Pre-Islamic age, Arabs have been famed for their equine glories and extraordinary passion for horses. Various manuscripts and books available on the Qatar Digital Library (QDL), an initiative launched in partnership between Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), the Qatar National Library (QNL) and the British Library, capture the essence of horsemanship and the long-standing equine tradition in the Arab world. Accessible on QDL is a book titled, ‘The Arabian Horse, His Country And People’, authored by Major- General William Tweedie, formerly HBM's Consul-General, Baghdad, and Political Resident for the Government of India in Turkish Arabia. In his book, Tweedie conveys his deep love of Arabian horses. Published in 1894, the book includes portraits of the people of Arabia, various sketches of Arabian horses, and a descriptive glossary of Arabic names for horses. Tweedie noted that when his service was over, he found himself an Arab in regards to his love for horses. He believed that study of Arabian horses and the study of the Islamic faith are intertwined. Horsemanship in the Arab world can be easily seen as a recurring theme in the book. QNL combines a national library, a public library, and an academic library in one institution. The library aims at becoming the knowledge hub of Qatar, seeing itself as a “third place” and an important driving force of Qatar’s knowledge-based economy. For about ten years, Qatar has been heavily investing in the infrastructure of knowledge institutions. Besides the public Qatar University, the state attracted famous international universities to open branch campuses in a newly constructed knowledge cluster called “Education City.” QNL is located in Education City as well. Its development is part of the country-wide efforts to construct a competitive knowledge economy, which is supposed to guarantee the country’s wealth. We report on the library’s manifold offers and discuss critically the book culture and reading habits in Qatar, the level of information literacy of Qatari nationals and expats as well as the location of QNL on the outskirts of Doha. Architect Rem Koolhaas’ illustrious design symbolically represents the Library’s vision and mission. The building, at 45,000 square meters, provides more than one million books, ground-breaking technology and unparalleled access to digital resources, a dedicated library for children and young adults, and even a restaurant and café. It is a stunning creation, yet it is so much more than just a building.
