Winters are often open and available for grazing here, reducing winter feed costs and allowing for more robust rest-rotations. Hay production in this region is normally averaging 4.5 ton per acre. If one were to rotationally graze the irrigated ground instead of haying it, a reasonable carrying capacity would be two acres per head annually on the irrigated ground. With the improved fencing, this is a low-input, well- balanced 350 head ranch. There are three pivots with electric pump and 3-phase delivery and one pivot that is 100% gravity-fed. Pivots have historically been utilized for alfalfa hay production with new seeding planned for 2019. There was $34,000 worth of fall fertilizer put on the pivots for the 2018 season. It has one runway designated 16/34 with an asphalt surface measuring 4,000 by 75 feet (1,219 x 23 m). For the 12-month period ending September 20, 2005, the airport had 8,050 aircraft operations, an average of 22 per day: 97% general aviation, 3% air taxi, and less than 1% military. At that time there were 14 aircraft based at this airport: 86% single-engine and 14% multi-engine. Billings Logan International Airport has scheduled nonstop flights to several airline hubs such as Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Portland, Salt Lake City and Seattle. Billings also serves as a small hub for Cape Air, a commuter airline which operates nonstop flights with Cessna 402 prop aircraft to Glasgow, Glendive, Havre, Sidney and Wolf Point in Montana. Airports also offer significant economic benefits to our communities by supporting jobs; generating payroll; paying taxes; and triggering spending at local, regional, and state levels.     MT 78 Corridor Study 4.3 Multi-Modal Transportation Railroad Facilities There is no rail service along the entire MT 78 corridor. Montana Rail Link operates a main line to the north of MT 78 that runs through Columbus. Air Facilities The Red Lodge Airport is located approximately one mile northwest of Red Lodge. Commercial airlines do not currently service the Airport. The Airport averages 22 operations daily, 46 percent of which is local general aviation. The Laurel Municipal Airport is located approximately 45 miles northeast of Red Lodge. Commercial airlines do not currently service the Airport. The Airport averages 36 operations daily, nearly 60 percent of which is local general aviation. Located approximately 60 miles northeast of Red Lodge, the Billings Logan International Airport offers 35 commercial scheduled air flights daily. In 2003, there were over 370,000 passenger boardings and nearly 375,000 passenger deplanements, making the Airport one of the largest and busiest facilities in the region. The Airport offers services from eight national carriers. Yellowstone Regional Airport is located in Cody, Wyoming, approximately 60 miles south of Red Lodge. The Airport is served by three national carriers. The Airport averages over 100 operations per day, the majority of which are local general aviation (42 percent). Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities There are no existing facilities within the corridor reserved solely for bicycle or pedestrian use. The MDT bicycle map notes that shoulders throughout this portion of the corridor are less than four feet in width and grades are greater than seven percent. Based on a field review, shoulders generally appear to be less than one foot in width or nonexistent.
