  • James Baldwin As a Writer of Short Fiction: an Evaluation
JAMES BALDWIN AS A WRITER OF SHORT FICTION: AN EVALUATION dayton G. Holloway A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 1975 618208 ii Abstract Well known as a brilliant essayist and gifted novelist, James Baldwin has received little critical attention as short story writer. This dissertation analyzes his short fiction, concentrating on character, theme and technique, with some attention to biographical parallels. The first three chapters establish a background for the analysis and criticism sections. Chapter 1 provides a biographi cal sketch and places each story in relation to Baldwin's novels, plays and essays. Chapter 2 summarizes the author's theory of fiction and presents his image of the creative writer. Chapter 3 surveys critical opinions to determine Baldwin's reputation as an artist. The survey concludes that the author is a superior essayist, but is uneven as a creator of imaginative literature. Critics, in general, have not judged Baldwin's fiction by his own aesthetic criteria. The next three chapters provide a close thematic analysis of Baldwin's short stories. Chapter 4 discusses "The Rockpile," "The Outing," "Roy's Wound," and "The Death of the Prophet," a Bi 1 dungsroman about the tension and ambivalence between a black minister-father and his sons. In contrast, Chapter 5 treats the theme of affection between white fathers and sons and their ambivalence toward social outcasts—the white homosexual and black demonstrator—in "The Man Child" and "Going to Meet the Man." Chapter 6 explores the theme of escape from the black community and the conseauences of estrangement and identity crises in "Previous Condition," "Sonny's Blues," "Come Out the Wilderness" and "This Morning, This Evening, So Soon." The last chapter attempts to apply Baldwin's aesthetic principles to his short fiction.

  • “Convoy” (Written by Bill Fries and Chip Davis) CW Mccall
The Story Behind The Song: “Convoy” (written by Bill Fries and Chip Davis) C. W. McCall (#1 country, #1 pop, 1975) Recently I mentioned this song “Convoy” in my earlier backstory regarding Waylon Jennings’ 1977 smash “Luckenbach, Texas (Back To The Basics Of Love),” explaining that six weeks at #1 had been the highest tally achieved by a country song during the decade of the 1970s, and that only three records had accomplished this. In addition to “Luckenbach, Texas,” the others were Freddie Hart’s “My Hang Up Is You” in 1972 and the song I’m writing about today: C. W. McCall’s “Convoy.” Bill Fries of Audobon, Iowa was working as a $40,000-a-year advertising executive for Bozell & Jacobs in Omaha, Nebraska when he first developed the characters of C. W. McCall and the truck-stop waitress, Mavis. Their commercials for Old Home Bread won a “Clio” award (given for advertising), and the song “Old Home Filler-Up An’ Keep On-A-Truckin’ Café” rose to #19 on the Billboard country charts in 1974. Fries continued working for Bozell & Jacobs, but he also pursued his secondary musical career, reaching #12 with “Wolf Creek Pass” and #13 with “Classified,” all released under his “C. W. McCall” moniker. In June of 1975, he was listening to his CB radio when he got the idea for “Convoy,” taking advantage of a growing fad. Nine months later, some 3.5 million CB operators were transmitting signals across the U. S., and some of them no doubt picked up on the trend after hearing McCall’s hit.

2 He was a brilliant composer and record producer, one of the best to come out of Motown. He was born on May12th 1940 in Harlem, New York, and passed away on September 16th 2008 in Los Angeles, at the age of 68. He founded Whitfield Records in Los Angeles after his departure from Motown Records. He was known as the father of the “Psychedelic Funk” sound. Longer songs, a heavy bass line, distorted guitars, multi-tracked drums and inventive vocal arrangements became the trademarks of Norman’s production output, mainly with The Temptations. According to Dave Laing (Journalist for the Guardian Newspaper; Thursday 18th September 2008) stated that Norman Whitfield’s first actual job at Motown Records was as a member of staff for which he got paid $15 a week to lend a critical ear to new recordings by Motown staff, a job he said "consisted of being totally honest about what records you were listening to". He graded the tracks for Gordy's monthly staff meeting, where decisions were made on which should be released. Soon dissatisfied with quality control, Whitfield fought to be allowed to create records himself. This involved competing with such established figures as Smokey Robinson, but he got his first 3 opportunities in 1964 with lesser Motown The Temptations’ songs, during the first ten groups, co-writing and producing “Needle years of the label’s operation. Such songs as in a Haystack” by the Velvelettes and “Too “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Many Fish in the Sea” by the Marvelettes. Me)”, “Ball Confusion”, “Papa Was a Rollin’ These records brought him the chance to Stone” and “I Can’t Get Next To You” all work with the Temptations, already one of achieved platinum certification in America for Motown's elite groups.
