The Council has also been able to provide financial assistance to a number of organisations within the village and this year we have been able to support two young residents of Llangyfelach and members of the 4th Morriston Guides, Maya Ingham and Ellie Phillips who were selected to represent (and Llangyfelach) at international events. We started on the small waterfalls that were only 1 metre high and progressed on to falls that are 10 metres high. They were amazing; the first time I jumped the 10 metre waterfall, I had an adrenaline rush and absolutely loved it. It felt like it was 100 metres up and I didn’t stop falling. We were quieter on the journey back as we were so tired. While staying at the Cabana we visited two towns, we visited downtown Curnavaca and Tepozlan. We held an Emergency Service Day where the Police, Fire Brigade and a Nurse came to visit. We loved learning about all the different services that help us and even got to sit in a fire engine! We enjoyed dressing up as our favourite emergency service, learning about friendship, kindness and working together. This term our new topic is ‘Battle of the Dinosaurs’. We have thought of lots of questions we would like to ask in order to find out about dinosaurs, and are looking forward to digging deep and discovering some dinosaur facts! In class, we have a dinosaur cave where we are creating a home for the different types of dinosaurs. We are enjoying hunting for fossils in the sand and using the brushes to carefully dust them. Year 1 Year 2 We have had one exciting term in Year 1. First there was a loud bang, so we In Year 2 we started the new academic year with a BANG! One day we found ran outside to see what it was. We really couldn’t believe what we found... a mysterious object in our outdoor area... something had crashed! We got a spaceship had crashed in our playground. We couldn’t believe it, there to work straight away and made the crash site safe. Some of us measured was slime everywhere!! the site while others explored the range of materials found. We also interviewed staff and children to try and find out who or what had landed in our yard! We then found a letter from Ziggy the alien! We needed to help him get home! We decided to make a trap. We read information to help us create a circuit and then made a trap using a bulb and buzzer. We are pleased to say that Ziggy made his way home and we found out so many interesting facts about Space!

A few days later an Alien appeared in our classroom, she had a note (that was covered in slime) and it asked us if we could help her to get back to her home planet of Mars. We had lots of fun learning about Mars and all the other planets in our solar system. Finally, even though we loved having Suki the alien in our class, we had to think of a way to get her home. We designed rockets and then together we made a rocket and put Suki in it. We think Mr Tribe found some rocket fuel in the half term, because when we came back to school Suki and the rocket had gone!! This term we have more exciting things to learn in our new topic ‘Enchanted Woodland’ and we are looking forward to going on a bear hunt at a nearby forest.

Year 3 In Year 3 this term our topic was ‘Tribe’ where we learnt all about the Celts. We found out about how and where the Celts lived, we researched the different Celtic symbols and Gods. We also spent time investigating the cost of looking after different animals, calculating the perimeter of their enclosures and measuring different Celtic weapons. In addition to this we thoroughly enjoyed learning the Ukulele every Thursday. We are looking forward to our topic this term which is ‘Mighty Metals’ and can’t wait to go swimming every Wednesday.

Year 4 Year 4 have had a wonderful start to the new year and our topic has been the Iron Age Celts. We have completed many exciting activities on the Celts and the pupils have learnt so much about them. The pupils discovered what Celtic life would have been like and have compared how their own lives differ from that of the Celts. For example, the pupils created a Venn diagram depicting differences and similarities between Celtic Roundhouses and modern day homes. We have also been very fortunate as we have recently received a visit from Swansea City AFC and Leon Britton. All of the pupils were lucky enough to be able to have a question and answer session with Leon Britton where he explained the importance of perseverance and determination. The excellent Swansea City coaches also undertook a training session for the pupils which the pupils thoroughly enjoyed.

A look back at the gardens of Morriston Hospital 1942-1970 Maesygwernen Hall The garden which my father and his team worked on pre-dated the hospital. They were part of Maesygwernen Hall. This was a rather grand building that began life as a farmhouse before being renovated and extended by the MP and owner of Worcester Tinplate Works William Williams in 1885. The house and land were purchased by the Ministry of Health on the 10th February 1941 under the Civil Defence Act 1939. When the Ministry took over the grounds to build an Emergency Hospital, they also took over Measygernen Hall to accommodate the Medical Super- intendent and Medical staff. Regrettably it has recently been demolished because it was said that there were insufficient funds to refurbish it.

A brief history of the hospital When the hospital was built the gardens provided vegetables for the patients and staff. The building of the hospital commenced in 1941 and was completed in 1942 taking 18 months to build. There was an annual agricultural show in the hospital grounds and the hospital staff also entered large displays for many shows in the area. These displays were made up of all kinds of vegetables, fruit and flowers and they very often won prizes for the hospital. There was also a hospital carnival in the month of June each year organized by the Morriston League of Friends. Cherry trees along the hospital drive

Sunday School

Our Sunday School continues each Sunday at 10:30 in the Parish Hall during School Term time. We have lots of fun together; learning and growing as friends. We partake in many activities during our Sunday School which involves craft, music and exploring the words of Jesus. We enjoy playing the hand-‐bells and are currently learning some tunes for the Community Carol Service.

All children are invited to share in our fun time together. Children under 3 years will need an adult to accompany them but over 3 years they can be left unaccompanied. We meet with the Church family at the communion rail at the end of our session to receive a blessing or if baptised, the bread of life.

Acknowledging the busy schedule of children today, we know that many are not able to attend each week; and that is absolutely fine. Come along when you can and enjoy our time together as we listen to and explore stories, make crafty fun to display on our boards and make new friends. We would also like to hear from you if you would like the Church to provide a Junior Church on a different day of the week to help with the busy schedule of parents and carers; please let us know if this is something you would like to see offered by the Church.

For older children, Rev Anthony is very keen to help them develop into altar servers, assisting in leading family services and to become choir members. So, age is no limit; if you would like to find out anything about our Sunday School please get in touch. It would be so encouraging to hear from you. Sunday School Sunday School

We have been fortunate enough to get some assistance with the coaching this year, Josh (our under 16s goalkeeper) supports us on Wednesdays and Sundays, his enthusiasm and goalkeeping expertise have assisted greatly with the boys development. The boys really enjoy their time with Josh and we are all grateful for the time that he puts in. We had an enjoyable pre-season, playing in a number of local tournaments. The form has continued into our Sunday fixtures, winning a majority of our games, with the boys putting in impressive performances every week. In

We made the most of the fine weather over the summer and, as usual, Merry Christmas attended a dozen or so tournaments across the breadth of South Wales, Anthony Rowe stretching from as far west as Kilgetty over to Newport in the East. Llangyfelach Under 12s As a team we said our goodbyes to the smaller sided game in April and our Under 12’s have moved onto full size pitches playing 11 a side football as of September 2018. We had three new players register over the summer taking our squad of 11 up to 14 for the start of this season and each of the new boys has integrated well into the team. Whilst the weather has not been conducive to regular football of late, we have started the season in good form remaining undefeated in the League at the time of writing. Unfortunately we suffered an early exit from the League Cup in the second round, although this has now put us into contention as one of the favourites to win the plate competition - every cloud has a silver lining I guess! We have also entered, and are awaiting fixtures, for the Boys and Girls Club of Wales Cup so there will be plenty of football again for the boys this season. Most of the players in the team are externally complementing the coaching provided by the club, and we have boys training with the Cardiff development centre, Swansea development centre and the current Schoolboys team. Several of the players also represent Port Talbot Town in the FAW Academy League. We continue with our passing ethos and encourage the players to ‘let the ball do the work’. Having coached a number of these players since they were six years old, I am immensely proud of the way they conduct themselves on and off the field and they continue to impress me with their ability and attitude.

After our first & very tough season in the 2nd tier of Welsh women’s football, we feel stronger & better prepared for this 18 -19 season. We finished last season a lot better than we started it, putting in 3 consecutive wins & even reaching a cup final at Penybont. The standard of football is far greater in WWL than the local league and we are learning more and more as we progress. The league has now been increased to 11 teams with the addition of Dafen & Rhos from West Wales & Merthyr, Willows & Splott from South East Wales, this is making the league far more competitive, with more games being close scoring . Our goals this season are finish with a higher points tally than last season ( which we are well on the way to achieving already) and also to keep learning & improving by competing with the stronger more established teams. Our ladies are really enjoying their football & are stepping up & training hard accepting all the challenges the league has to offer.⚽️👍⚽️👍 Lee Cana (Llangyfelach Ladies Coach)
