A new brontothere from the Eocene of South China. Acta Palae- ontologica Polonica 63 (X): xxx–xxx. The upper Eocene Youganwo Formation in Maoming Province, Guangdong Province, China, produced abundant re- mains of turtles and crocodiles, but mammalian remains are rare. The previously found mammals from Youganwo Formation include a nimravid carnivore and an amynodontid perissodactyl. Here we report on a new brontotheriid perissodactyl from the Youganwo Formation. Maobrontops paganus gen. et sp. nov. is described based on a maxillary fragment with P4 and M1–2 (SYSU-M-4). Maobrontops paganus gen. et sp. nov. is characterized by the combination of a simple P4 without a hypocone with derived molars having large molar fossae and large anterolingual cingular cusp. A parsimony implied weighting character analysis places Maobrontops gen. nov. in the clade Embolotheriita as a sister taxon to the terminal subclade containing Nasamplus, Protembolotherium, and Embolotherium. Maobrontops paganus gen. et sp. nov. is one of the largest Asian brontotheres. The brontotheriid fauna of South China is endemic and includes at least three valid taxa: Dianotitan from Brontotheriita and Pygmaetitan and Maobrontops gen. nov. from Embolotheriita. Chronology and Faunal Evolution of the Middle Eocene Bridgerian North American Land Mammal “Age”: Achieving High Precision Geochronology Kaori Tsukui Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2016 © 2015 Kaori Tsukui All rights reserved ABSTRACT Chronology and Faunal Evolution of the Middle Eocene Bridgerian North American Land Mammal “Age”: Achieving High Precision Geochronology Kaori Tsukui The age of the Bridgerian/Uintan boundary has been regarded as one of the most important outstanding problems in North American Land Mammal “Age” (NALMA) biochronology. The Bridger Basin in southwestern Wyoming preserves one of the best stratigraphic records of the faunal boundary as well as the preceding Bridgerian NALMA. In this dissertation, I first developed a chronological framework for the Eocene Bridger Formation including the age of the boundary, based on a combination of magnetostratigraphy and U-Pb ID-TIMS geochronology. Within the temporal framework, I attempted at making a regional correlation of the boundary-bearing strata within the western U.S., and also assessed the body size evolution of three representative taxa from the Bridger Basin within the context of Early Eocene Climatic Optimum. Integrating radioisotopic, magnetostratigraphic and astronomical data from the early to middle Eocene, I reviewed various calibration models for the Geological Time Scale and intercalibration of 40Ar/39Ar data among laboratories and against U-Pb data, toward the community goal of achieving a high precision and well integrated Geological Time Scale. In Chapter 2, I present a magnetostratigraphy and U-Pb zircon geochronology of the Bridger Formation from the Bridger Basin in southwestern Wyoming. -

The genus Patriofelis was originally established by Dr. Leidy, in the 'Proceedings' of the Philadelphia Academy, March, I870, p. IO, upon the fragmentary portions of the rami of both lower jaws, which were obtained by Dr. Hayden in the Bridger Baisin, Wyoming, the year previous. In August, I872, Prof. Marsh described (Amer. Jour. Science, Vol. IV, p. io) from the same locality, some remains of a " gigantic Carnivore " which he referred to a new genus and species under the name of Limnofelis ferox. According to Prof. Marsh's statement, his specimen consists of portions of the skull, fragments of the lower jaw, some vertebrae, and other less important parts of the skeleton. In the same paper he describes a second species under the name of Limnofelis latidens, from a last upper premolar, which was obtained in the same horizon. Prof. Cope, in the 'American Naturalist' of i88o (Vol. XIV, p. 745), proposed a third genus from teeth and limb bones, which were collected by the writer in the Wind River Baisin in the summer of I879. To these remains Prof. Cope gave the name Protopsalis tig,-inus. Prof. Scott has described in tle 'Journal of the Philadelphia Academy,' i886 (Vol. IX, p. I74), some remains of a large Creodont from the Bridger formation, which he referred to Prof. Cope's genus Protopsalis. A new species of this genus was proposed by the writer (Bull. Amer. Mus. Nat. Palaeontologia Electronica New Data on the Oxyaenidae from the Early
Palaeontologia Electronica http://palaeo-electronica.org New data on the Oxyaenidae from the Early Eocene of Europe; biostratigraphic, paleobiogeographic and paleoecologic implications Floréal Solé, Emmanuel Gheerbrant and Marc Godinot ABSTRACT The locality of Le Quesnoy (France; MP7) has yielded a diversified mammal fauna including especially large mammals. Oxyaenidae are well documented with two spe- cies identified: Oxyaena woutersi and Palaeonictis gigantea. The Le Quesnoy material illustrates almost the entire dentition of these species. Its study supports the generic attribution of Oxyaena woutersi. Its M2 is more secant than in the primitive Dipsalidictis, but the M1 appears to be slightly less secant than in the earliest species of Oxyaena. Oxyaena woutersi is a morphological intermediate between the Clarkforkian-Wasat- chian Dipsalidictis and the Wasatchian Oxyaena. The M2 of Palaeonictis gigantea is compared to the sole known molar of Dormaalodon woutersi. Dormaalodon is here demonstrated to be a junior synonym of Palaeonictis. Several postcranial elements of Oxyaena woutersi and Palaeonictis gigantea are described: they are the first described for European oxyaenids. The oxyaenid species from Le Quesnoy and Dormaal show a close affinity and support an age very close to MP7 for Le Quesnoy. The Le Quesnoy oxyaenids are morphologically close to the North American species of Wa0, which sup- ports correlation with this level. We revised the European Oxyaenidae previously described from younger localities. Fossils from Meudon, Sinceny and Abbey Wood (MP8+9) are referred to Oxyaena sp. A North American origin of the Oxyaenidae is confirmed. Our study supports a single dispersal event of oxyaenids from North Amer- ica to Europe followed by a short endemic local evolution. -

Barry Albright III1 A single, small, water-worn tooth from the “middle” Arikareean Toledo Bend Local Fauna of the Gulf Coastal Plain closely resembles the lower fourth premolar of the questionable primate Ekgmowechashala. The only known species of the genus, Ekgmowechashala philotau Macdonald (1963), was originally recovered from the early Arikareean Sharps Formation of South Dakota, but is also known from similar aged strata of the John Day Formation, Oregon. Although the Toledo Bend specimen differs somewhat in morphology from the p4 of E. philotau, a new species is not named in this report because of such limited material and because the specimen is incomplete. Unfortunately, the specimen does not provide information that helps clarify current arguments regarding the affinities of Ekgmowechashala with primates or plagiomenids. It does, however, provide (1) a temporal range extension for the genus to the early late Arikareean, or about four million years younger than previously known, and (2) a geographic extension east and considerably south of its prior distribution. If Ekgmowechashala is ultimately deter- mined to belong to the Primates, then the Toledo Bend species would become the last known North American representative of the order.
