  • Building Birmingham: a Tour in Three Parts of the Building Stones Used in the City Centre
Urban Geology in the English Midlands No. 3 Building Birmingham: A tour in three parts of the building stones used in the city centre. Part 3. Around the shops from the ‘Back of Rackham’s’ to the Bullring Ruth Siddall, Julie Schroder and Laura Hamilton The name ‘Birmingham’ is derived from the Anglo-Saxon Beormingahām, alluding to the home of the Beormingas clan and their settlement here was probably established as early as the 7th Century A.D. However the centre remained a poor region until the later 12th Century when Peter de Bermingham, local lord of the manor, developed a market centre around his castle, in the area that is now the Bull Ring. From then Birmingham’s economy began to take off and it became established as a small market town. The Bull Ring has also been shown to be an area of light industry at this time. Archaeological excavations carried out during the latest phase of construction in the early 2000s have revealed evidence of potters’ workshops and leatherworks during the 13th Century. This building stone walk focuses on the old centre of Birmingham, around the church of St Martin in the Bull Ring and the surrounding shopping malls. The area demonstrates continuity as a centre for trade and retail but the building materials used here have changed beyond those that would have been familiar to Peter de Bermingham and his family. The area has been transformed over the last two decades, and though the oldest part of the city of Birmingham, it is now the symbol of a new vibrant centre, with the covered markets replaced by glamorous shopping malls.

  • Milton Keynes Rail Services – Matter 5 – Transport – 24 July
Milton Keynes rail services – Matter 5 – Transport – 24 th July – Jim Middleton – REP/269971 1. Since I wrote my initial submission there have been some positive changes so I have revised my statement. Firstly on Crossrail there is now the inclusion in the Network Rail Programme of a Crossrail extension to join the West Coast mainline near Willesden. I petitioned and appeared before both the Commons and Lords Crossrail Select Committees to put my basic case that the Crossrail services proposed were a waste of expensive tunnelling under Central London and that Crossrail should be a Thameslink style regional rail scheme. Not a downgrading of main railway lines to a London Underground type operation that hardly crosses the M25. The Committees were only allowed to consider details of the scheme and not whether it made transport sense but particularly the Lords Select Committee encouraged me to continue my campaign. 2. The recent work done by the wider rail industry for their report London and SE RUS confirms that the Crossrail scheme is poor use of the central tunnels and the 28 trains out of the 48 each hour not getting west of Paddington are wasted. The RUS proposes a link to WCML which will allow trains from WCML to access directly Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf. Potentially there are huge benefits for Milton Keynes if the opportunity is taken – particularly when HS2 allows more fast suburban services into London. 3. Although the West Coast mainline has been upgraded at enormous expense with years of chronic disruption and weeks of blockades for Milton Keynes residents what has emerged nothing like what people were expecting.

Songs From the Age of Steam Bargery No. 030 Birmingham and Liverpool Railway, A New song on the opening of the Synopsis A description of the opening of the Birmingham and Liverpool Railway and of the local people who went to watch the ceremony. Themes: Railway opening ceremony, Reaction of onlookers, Association of steam power with sexuality Text On the 4th of July I recollect well What bustle there was in the morning I‟ll tell With lasses and lads so buxom and gay Delighted and talking about the railway Chorus: You may travel by steam, or so the folks say All the world over upon the railway To view the railroad away they did go Tis a great undertaking as you very well know It surpasses all others believe me its true There‟s tunnels for miles that you have to go through Here‟s coaches and carts to accommodate all The lame and the lazy, the great and the small If you wish to ride, to be sure you must pay To see all the fun sir upon the railway Colliers from Hampton and Bilston likewise And Wedgbury nailors are struck with surprise To see the railroad to be sure they must go Drest up in their best, they cut a fine show. The cobbler left the old shoes in the shop Old men on crutches were seen for to hop The tailor his customers would not obey But rode on his goose to see the railway There was dumpling bet with Jack the Moonraker There was buxom young Kit with the Butcher and Baker And Black Sal from Walsall with two wooden legs To see the railroad how she trudged on her pegs In London I‟ve heard there is a machine Invented for making young children by steam Such dear little creatures full thirty each day For young engineers to supply the railway So now my good fellows let us be free Again fill the glasses now merry we‟ll be Success to all trades in the reign of our queen And boiling hot water that travels by steam.
