Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 10 Regattas

The past year has seen our regatta activity continue to grow by almost any measure.

We continue to be challenged on several fronts to satisfy increasing demand for racing including access to venues, availability of volunteers & officials and staff capacity. We fully appreciate the efforts of all those involved at a state and club level and continue to seek ways to improve the sustainability of our rowing programme.

The NSW State Championships was, once again, a magnificent event followed four weeks later by the National Championships combined with the FISA World Cup. Blessed by near perfect weather and outstanding competition, these events showcased SIRC as a world class venue and NSW as a rowing community that can deliver where it matters – on the water.

We look forward to next year when SIRC will not only host the National Championships again but also the Australian Masters Championships. This will obviously require another step up in delivery effort but I’m sure we will once again deliver world class events.

Representative Honours

Congratulations go to all of our members (and there were many) who have had the honour of representing their state and/or country over the last season. Our athletes have represented their state with distinction as evidenced by our strong showing in all boat classes at the interstate regatta and their inclusion in national teams. There were also a number of coaches and team officials who travelled with state and national crews and Boat Race Officials who officiated at interstate and international events. We are privileged to have members of such calibre in our midst.

We continue to build cooperative relationships with the upstream development pathway for athletes and coaches as well as the overall development of the sport in Australia by maintaining close partnerships with the New South Wales Institute of Sport and Rowing Australia. The National Talent Pathway Program now being rolled out by RA in close collaboration with NSWIS, RNSW and key High Performance clubs is evidence of a greater commitment to vertically integrate the talent pathway.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 11 Staff

As with the Board, stability in the staff ranks has assisted in facilitating a continuity of direction and a longer term focus. Under the leadership of Tony Blower the staff of RNSW continues to do an outstanding job. They are a pleasure to work with and, in all cases, their commitment to the organisation is absolute and their ability to deliver in their specialist roles as well as contribute broadly in a team sense is truly outstanding. I congratulate them on a job well done and look forward to another successful year.

Sponsors

Finally I would like to thank our sponsors who you will find listed on the back inside cover of this report. Their support is vital to our growth and I encourage all members to give them your patronage whenever possible.

This reflects on our careful planning forward for this trend to continue. and our active monitoring of costs. Our balance sheet remains strong and we have a commitment to the financial longevity of our sport in this state.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 13 Our technology and communication systems we believe are second to none in rowing in Australia, with the sophistication of our regatta entry management system the envy of many. Likewise our web page, Facebook page and Twitter feeds are used on a regular basis by our members and those interested on our sport. The ability to remain in touch with our live regatta function anywhere in the world has proven extremely popular, as has the coverage of our NSW athletes competing overseas at major events, both in real time and editorially.

We continue to make refinements to our regatta and accounting systems in an effort to improve the functionality of these systems in response to members desires to have more self-directed input. These efforts will be ongoing.

Once again this year our volunteers have given of themselves above and beyond the call of duty. Travelling for our regattas far and wide throughout the state, in sunshine and rain; on the harbour, on our regional river systems and at SIRC our BROs, boat holders, time keepers and helpers have made the holding of regattas possible. As an organisation we deeply value their contribution and continually look at ways to support them and improve their experience.

We continue to applaud the generosity of our clubs as once again they have embraced the true spirit of our sport and made their athletes, equipment and facilities available not just to Rowing NSW but also to other clubs. This commitment to the common good of the sport is something that sets us apart.

Last year we made a commitment to assisting the regions in development. I am delighted to report that we have made a good start in this area with the provision of a number of coaching and development camps in both the CDRA and NRRA. We want to expand on this start and commitment to engaging with the regions to provide high quality professional delivered courses.

The staff of Rowing NSW has once again this year made a significant contribution to the success of rowing in this state. Their dedication and professionalism has been on display not only at each regatta but also in their dealings with clubs, schools and members. I would like to publicly record my thanks for their loyalty and efforts during the year.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 14 I would also like to extend my thanks to our loyal sponsors and supporters. In particular I would like to thank Bentleys. Not only have they made a financial contribution but they assist by employing athletes, offering internships and contributing to our state members in the national team.

Looking forward I believe that we are well placed to continue to build on our recent success and I look forward to the new season in order that we might implement some of our initiatives.

Once again I would like to thank the Board of Rowing NSW for the faith they have shown in me and the staff.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 15 FINANCE REPORT The surplus of income over expenditure for the year was $23,214 bringing members accumulated funds to $552,597 as at 30th June 2014. The Rowing New South Wales Board has a strong commitment to delivering a relatively modest annual surplus in order to ensure the financial integrity of the organization and enable us to meet any unforeseen obligations, or to take advantage of opportunities which may be presented, whilst delivering infrastructure and support to members to ensure we remain Australia’s premier rowing state.

Revenue for the year was $1,123,871 which was an increase of 3% overall from the previous financial year. Overall regatta entries for clubs and schools were up by 5% and Rowing NSW regattas were up by 10%. Overall Rowing NSW hosted 11 regattas at Sydney International Regatta Centre, including for the first time the NSW Schoolgirl Head of the River. Membership revenue for the year was $243,735 and an increase of 6% on the previous year. Both increased regatta entries and steady membership growth are reflected in increased revenue for the year. 2013-14 Income Annual Events Club & Schools Regattas NSWRA Regattaa Coaching Income Income From Trusts Development Affiliation Fees Grants & Sponsorships Levys Memberships Expenditure for the year was $1,100,657, which was a 2.6% increase from 2012-13. Operations expenses increased by 11%, with a large increase being spent on updating and maintaining boat race official equipment, including the purchase of four new catamarans which are reflected on the balance sheet. Overall expenditure on Boat Race Official equipment and boats was over $80K and is reflected in the financial position and note to the financial statements 9 (Property, Plant and Equipment). Regatta expenses also increased in line with the increase in regatta entries and events. Both Administration and Development expenses were down. While both departments are not intended to contribute to net income, the board has concluded that they should at least break even financially and contribute to the sport in NSW by increased participation, promotion & education.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 16 This year Rowing NSW brought back the Presentation Dinner, which was successfully relocated to lower costs and promote a larger attendance. Rowing NSW also made a profit with the King’s Cup lunch by decreasing the size of the venue hire, which also was a success. Another important change that had a very slight effect on income was the restructure of the club levy fee calculation. The way in which the club levy and affiliation fees are calculated was made more equitable by introducing a sliding scale. The majority of clubs, through the treasurers meetings over the last three years, came to this agreement as the fairest and most equitable calculation of levies across affiliated clubs. Prior to this the levies were calculated in such a way that disadvantaged the smaller clubs. The majority of treasurers and finance committee believe this was a successful outcome.

Financial reporting continues to be provided to the Rowing NSW board on a monthly basis with actual results compared with month- and year-to-date budgets. The debtor’s collection process continues to improve with all schools, some universities and a few clubs taking up the option to prepay regatta seat fees in advance. Rowing Manager is continually improved and clubs are gaining more and more use of the online services and reporting that it provides. We have continued to provide full accounting services to both CDRA and NRRA and will continue to do so. This includes debt collection, invoicing and processing of all payments.

Financially Rowing NSW has had a successful 2013-14 season. We have increased membership and regatta entries and the number of regattas. We continue to move forward and increase the services that we provide across NSW we are hoping to achieve an overall surplus of about $37, 000 for the 2014-15 season. We will be adding more events again to our program which will include the ISRA regatta and the National Masters Championships. We will be striving to reduce costs, increase activities & services and develop initiatives to further enhance our service delivery to the NSW rowing community.

The Regatta Commission met on seven occasions to review the outcomes of the current season’s regattas and to plan the 2014-15 calendar.

The NSW State Championship regatta will again be held in mid-February to provide appropriate spacing before the National Championships. Six new events, Men’s and Women’s Under 17 Eights, Men’s and Women’s Under 21 Lightweight Doubles, and Men’s and Women’s Under 23 Lightweight Doubles, have been added to the programme.

The historic Riverview Gold Cup Regatta will revert to its traditional date in the second half of the season, two weeks before the GPS Regatta.

For Head races, the order of events has been reviewed to better rank the boat classes by speed. For many other regattas, much work has been done to fine tune the programmes to provide better opportunities.

Changes to the Laws of Boat Racing were adopted to bring the masters handicaps into line with handicaps adopted by the Rowing Australia Masters Commission.

The annual Regatta Forum was held in June, in order to present to clubs, schools, and other interested parties the draft regatta programme for the new season. The Regatta Forum also canvassed a range of other issues. The processes that the Regatta Commission follows in setting the dates of regattas, allocating regattas to club, and determining the events and order of events were explained and discussed. The Regatta Commission welcomes this opportunity to hear the views of all parties and receive valuable feedback. The discussion resulted in a number of adjustments to the programme.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 20 COMPETITION COMMISSION The Competition Commission met four times in 2013-2014 season. Our major task was to arrange policies for state team selections. Our objectives for the year were to win the interstate Rowing Australia Cup by maximising our crew performances at the Interstate Regatta.

In 2013 Rowing Australia discontinued the Interstate Youth Cup held between all states and north and south islands of New Zealand and replaced it with a national team U21 competition against New Zealand. This move reduced the opportunities for youth development competition from around 140 rowers nationally and 20 from New South Wales to 20 nationally. Members of the Competition Commission made representations to retain the Youth Cup to Rowing Australia but these representations were not considered. The new competition reduces development competition opportunities for youth rowers in the off season and this is an issue the RNSW Competition Commission will review for NSW rowers in 2014-15.

In 2013-14 the Commission was again chaired by Board member Stephen Handley who provided our group with strong leadership, Commission members were Chris Noel, Bronwen Watson, and Alan Bennett. Selectors Terry O’Hanlon and Nick Baxter also joined the commission meetings.

The Commission has retained its policy of trying to inject planning, support, consistency and methodology into our State Team selection processes.

In 2014 the NSW State Team achieved strong results in the Interstate Regatta but finished just behind Queensland and Victoria. We retained the King’s Cup and the crew set a new record for New South Wales with our seventh consecutive win. Sasha Belonogoff won the Presidents’ Cup for the Interstate Men’s Single and our women’s lightweight quad rowed well to close second place. Both our youth eights finished third and our men’s lightweight four came fourth. We fell short of our objectives of winning the Rowing Australia Cup in 2014 and in 2015 we will need to look carefully at how we can improve performances in areas where we continue to underperform. These are senior women, lightweight men and, in 2014, our youth eights.

A major challenge for 2014-5 will be to ensure our youth eights have the time together to get the right combinations in bigger boats and that all our best youth rowers have the opportunity to be selected at their peak time.

The Commission again extend thanks to all our state team coaches, especially our senior coaches Nick Garratt and Ellen Randell, and to our selectors Terry O’Hanlon, Nick Baxter and Mick Smith, and RNSW development manager Alan Bennett for their assistance with the state team.

We would also thanks those clubs who provided coaching support, trained our NSW athletes and generously lent their facilities and equipment for state teams to train in and race.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 21 2014 INTERSTATE REGATTA Sydney International Regatta Centre, (SIRC).

Similar to last year, the Interstate regatta was part of the Sydney International Rowing Regatta (SIRR2014) comprising of the Australian National Championships, National Schools Championships, World Cup #1 and the Interstate regatta.

Last year, training restrictions placed on the Interstate teams by the NRCE caused a logistical problem. There were some restrictions this year but it didn’t appear to be such an issue.

We still have some team members living interstate and this again caused some difficulty in getting quality training time for some crews. This was addressed by holding training camps when athletes were available, for example after the National Time Trial.

As in previous years, Lead Coaches were appointed along with Assistant Coaches for each crew. Training squads were announced, based on certain criteria, with the intention of having these crews boat once per week. Depending on the size of the squad, crew changes were made to give everyone a chance to be seen in the crew and additional people were added based on their results from monthly time trials and /or ergo testing results.

Squad training allowed coaches to gather information on the individuals and see how various crew combinations mould together. This information and results from the RNSW Small Boats Regatta (SBR) were used to determine how each crew proceeded with its selection.

Selection for some crews was much easier than others as the results from SBR and other collected data made the decision clear cut. However, for others, such as the Youth M8+, the decision was much more difficult to make due to the changing fitness levels of those involved.

Once crews were finally selected, training continued on a weekly basis up until SIRR2014 and then whenever it could be fitted in between other crew training / racing. With the regatta program being extended to eight days this year, there was more time available during the regatta for training.

After winning three events and the Australia Cup for the overall point score last year, there was a lot of pressure to continue that success. However, with some of our best youth rowers moving up into senior boats, both of these boats were left in a rebuilding stage.

Crew – Nell Slater Trophy Coach Anna McGlynn (UTS) Ellen Randell / P McGlynn Anna McGlynn was the NSW representative this year in the Nell Slater Trophy. This race only had five entries and was dominated by the winner from Queensland from the first stroke. However, Anna came out hard and was in the mix for fourth / fifth position until the halfway mark. Here she dropped off the pace somewhat. She managed to rally a good last 500m but was unable to catch the fourth placed sculler, finishing in fifth position.

Crew – Presidents Cup Coach Sasha Belonogoff (SUBC) Rhett Ayliff (NTC) Mark Prater (SUBC) Sasha Belonogoff was again the NSW representative in M1x for the President’s Cup. Having a conservative start to the race, Sasha only moved into the lead at the halfway mark. However, once there he continued to move into a commanding position and the final result was never in doubt with Sasha posting his first win in this event.

Crew – Victoria Cup Coach Holly Lawrence (SUWRC); (UTS); (UTS); Georgie Ellen Randell (UTS) Miansarow (MRC) (Jess Hudson – UNSW) Kyeema Doyle (LK) On paper, this crew was ranked third, however they had a different opinion.

This crew had a terrific start, moving fast off the line and leaving the other crews in their wake. They knew that the TAS and WA crews would be strong and they led both through the 1000m mark. TAS started to gradually claw back and just lead the field at 1250m by ½ length. A gutsy last 500m from NSW saw that distance stay the same as TAS were unable to move away and WA made no impression on the leading 2 crews.

A well planned strategy by the coach, superbly executed by the crew saw NSW win a much deserved second place.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 23

Crew – Penrith Cup Coach Simon Nola (SRC); Richard Coakley (MRC); Ed DE Carvalho (SUBC); Will Geariod Towey (UTS) Clark (MRC); (Rod Chisholm – UTS) Unknown to the team at the beginning of this campaign, the appointed Lead coach was planning on moving overseas so there was not much leadership for this group. The Asst Coach stepped in to fill the void and to give direction.

This is an extremely difficult category and with Ed being based at the NTC, this crew had limited training time in the boat, especially for scullers. They did manage to train on a weekly basis with the reserve, Rod Chisholm filling in.

Due to this limited time to bond into a cohesive unit, they were unable to move off the start fast in racing.

They trailed coming through the 500m mark but moved up into fourth position and were gradually closing the gap on the crews in front of them. Unfortunately, they were unable to make up the 0.5sec to the third placed TAS crew before the finish.

Crew – Bicentennial Cup Coach Serena Cox (MRC); (MRC); Jessie Allen (MRC); Nicola Alfie Young (MRC) Metcalfe (SUWRC); (MRC); Georgia Gotch (MRC); Lachlan Allen (LK) Rafaela Stalph (MRC); Sophie Deans (MRC) cox Dani Pettit (MRC); (India Evans – SUWRC; Maddie Wallace – SUWRC) This crew retained three core members from previous years, but the new members to the group were very inexperienced at this level. They had managed to have some training rows as a crew prior to being selected, but Georgie Gotch was then relocated to Melbourne. Whilst the crew continued to train with the reserve in the boat, this was a key seat and it wasn’t the same.

This combined with the lack of experience in the crew showed in the last part of the race. The crew had a reasonable start but never got into their stride and were chasing up and down the slide. At halfway, QLD started to move away from them and in the last quarter, VIC started to close on them. It was here that both the inexperience and the telling amount of racing that the stern pair had been involved in during the regatta showed. The focus shifted from the “process” to the “outcome”, resulting in VIC moving through in the last two strokes, relegating NSW to 3rd. Overall this was a disappointing row and result for this group.

Crew – Noel F Wilkinson Cup Coach Rob Tucker (MRC); Alex Purnell (SUBC); Daniel Whitehead (SUBC); Tom Rick van Hooydonk (SUBC) Whitehead (SUBC); Tom Schramko (MRC); Jess Coyle (SRC); Sam Hardy Alistair Matthews (SUBC) (SRC) Rob Black (MRC); cox Franc Gourlas (SUBC); (Joshua David – SUBC; James David – SUBC) This crew contained one rower plus coxswain from last year. The remainder of the crew was made up from mainly scullers with little sweep experience. The squad rowed together on a regular basis, but due to selection difficulties, this crew was finalised later than the other boats. This was a race of three parts: NSW were third at the 1000m mark within 1½ seconds of the leaders with the next two crews level, one length behind and the last crew a further length behind. The positions remained the same, but the margins increased over the next 1000m. Although this was a disappointing result for this crew, it is a new combination which will be the basis of this squad over the next couple of years.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 24

Crew – Queen’s Cup Coach Coco Bryant (MRC); Elizabeth Halsall (UTS); Ellie WInstanley (SUWRC); Debbie Fox (SUWRC) Amy Clay (MRC); Laura Honson* (UTS); (SRC); Kelly Parker Lachlan Carter (SRC) (UTS); Rachael Kiely (MRC); cox Kendall Brodie (SRC); (Tess Gerrand – SRC) Four members of this crew had stepped up from successful years in Youth crews and joined some very experienced senior rowers. Building on last year, the coaches and rowers were keen to step up and their training and the enthusiasm they brought to each session showed this. Being based Interstate, Tess Gerrand had limited training in the boat and so the reserve, Laura Honson spent most of the time in the 6 seat. The night of their final practice, the lead coach, Debbie Fox, was informed that due to an injury Tess had to withdraw from the crew. Although the crew had only managed limited training with Tess in the boat, this came as a major blow and on race day the crew did not perform to the potential that had been demonstrated in training. The crew were never in contention and finished a disappointing last.

Crew – King’s Cup Coach (SRC); (SUBC); Nick Wheatley (SUBC); Nick Garratt (MRC) Alex Lloyd (SRC); (SRC); Nick Purnell (SUBC); Mark Prater (SUBC) (SUBC); (SUBC); cox Toby Lister (SUBC); ( – SUBC; Cam Girdlestone – SUBC) Over the previous campaigns, the crew had maintained their core members, with one new member coming on board each year. This year, Francis Hegerty, Sam Loch and Dan Noonan, stroke man of the crew for the last four years all stepped aside, leaving a big opening for new talent. With the crew spread across NSW, ACT, VIC and SA finding time to row the boat was again problematic. November saw the first camp of the campaign being conducted on the Nepean River with another in December after the National TT. Due to training protocols for two of the crew based at the NTC, the final camp was held in March down in Canberra three weeks before the race.

The crew was an unknown quantity going into the race; however, after 250m it was clear that they would win the race. They were dominant from the first stroke and continued this through to the last, posting a time of 5:32 to win by over 5sec from 2nd place SA. This was a very impressive performance, setting a record of seven consecutive wins and the trend for ongoing success.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 25 Summary

The strength in depth we have had in the last 2 years in both Men’s and Women’s youth crews has moved on, resulting in a building phase over the next few years for this category.

Good progress has been made in the women’s lightweight crew; however, we need more development opportunities for men.

Similarly, NSWIS, RNSW and the clubs need to continue development of QC eligible athletes. We have very little depth in this category and if we are going to be competitive in this boat again we require more athletes to step up and also the retention of past performers.

The development of the KC squad is evolving as can be seen from this year’s result with two U23’s on board. It is imperative that development from the underage groups continues to feed up into the KC squad. However, we must not become complacent about our position as it only takes a slight change in momentum to derail the best laid plans.

The combined efforts from all crews this year was not sufficient to retain the Rowing Australia Cup, NSW narrowly missing out to Queensland, who have not won this event for over ten years.

This year’s State Team would not have been possible without the co-operation of all club coaches to work together to supply training venues, racing boats and equipment to all the crews.

Thanks must also be given to the RNSW Selectors, club and RNSW/NSWIS officials for ensuring that everything was done to get the best possible crews to the start line.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 26 MASTERS ROWING The Masters community continued to strongly support Rowing NSW and Rowing Australia during the past year, both in participation in Age and Grade Regattas as well as volunteering support throughout the season.

The Masters Shield was won by St George for the second year running, followed by rowing Premiers Leichhardt with in third place.

Sadly, during last season, New South Wales lost two giants of Masters Rowing in the passing of Bob Hammond and John Sypkens.

The good news during the year included the opening of the new UTS Haberfield Clubhouse, the introduction of new Handicaps for Masters racing and a successful Masters Training weekend run by Alan Bennett on Middle Harbour.

The State Masters Championship Regatta was held at SIRC in excellent conditions, and was attended by 566 competitors, 10% more than last year which was unexpected as the Australian Masters had been held two weeks prior. The new Regatta Point Score was won by St George, with Canberra upsetting Mosman for second place!

At the Australian Masters Championships in Adelaide, Victoria, Queensland and NSW won the medals in all Interstate races bar the Men’s Quad where Tasmania ran second. The NSW Women’s Quad rowed a close fought second to Victoria, with our crews running third in the Men’s and Women’s Eight and Men’s Quad.

NSW single scullers dominated in Adelaide, with Elizabeth Halsall, Amanda Behrendt, Lindy Nisbett, Kaye Smythe Trent Rogers, Carl Quitzau and Bruce Sharp all Australian Champions in their age group.

Next season is going to be very challenging, with a FISA Masters Regatta in Ballarat in November, the Australian Rowing Championships again at SIRC, and the NSW and Australian Masters Championships at SIRC in May.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 27 PARA-ROWING In the 2013/14 NSW rowing season para-rowing must be recognised as having taken a huge leap forward and this advance was evident at both the NSW State Championships as well as at the Nationals/World Cup. This year at the NSW State Championships, for the first time ever anywhere in Australia, there was a full field of LTA para-rowers in both the male and female categories with 7 entries received in the Men’s LTA category alone and 8 entries in the LTA doubles category.

This increase in numbers can be directly attributed to the support shown by RNSW toward any club that wished to introduce a para-rowing programme to their already existing rowing programmes. In 2010 when Balmain re-commenced a para-programme it wouldn’t have been possible without the ongoing support, knowledge, energy and enthusiasm shown by all staff at RNSW and though staff have changed that level of support has continued.

Outstanding Results

Erik Horrie (AS, Sydney Rowing Club) has had an outstanding year and capped it off by winning the 2013 Magpie Award.

In 2013, Erik set a new World record in the ASM while on the way to claiming both the National and World Championship titles and was chosen to compete at the World Championships in in August 2014.

Jeremy McGrath (LTA, Balmain Rowing Club) was named NSW Rowing’s Novice of the Year as in his first year of competition Jeremy not only finished the season holding the NSW State titles in the LTA M1x and LTA Mi2x but also the National LTA M1x, LTA Mi2x and the LTA Mi 4+.

Kate Murdoch (LTA, Nepean Rowing Club) goes from strength to strength and once again finished the season with a swag of gold to add to her already burgeoning medal cabinet with the National and State LTA W1x, LTA Mi2x, and the National LTA 4+.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 28 October 2013 saw a Balmain LTA 4+ crew compete in the Head of the Charles Regatta, Boston. This was the first time an international crew had entered this event category and against all expectations the crew came home winners. This year Balmain are once again sending a crew to defend their 2013 win and will be joined on the start line by a second NSW LTA 4+, from St George Rowing Club.

NSW was once again recognised as the pre-eminent State for para-rowing and came away from the Nationals with the Para Shield yet again. This makes it three wins in a row and we plan to hold fast to the Shield for many years to come!

For NSW to remain the pre-eminent Para-rowing State we need to acknowledge the support and assistance of every member of the staff of RNSW. Whether it’s an issue with a regatta entry, or classification or even the recognition that para events are entitled to be granted competition points, I can say that each staff person named above have played a significant role in the continuing development of para-rowing in this State.

To the Board of Rowing NSW, the staff, those that cheer and recognise the efforts of the competitors in this category, the coaches, and the clubs thank you for your ongoing recognition that this class of rower is as valued and important as any other.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 29 NSW UNION OF ROWERS The Union has had busy year. The principal activity is the awarding of the Union of Rowers’ Scholarships. This year the Union has made five awards of $1,000 each to promising young rowers who demonstrated their potential last season. The recipients are: Robert Black of Mosman Rowing Club, Kate Hall of Kinross Wolaroi College, Holly Lawrence of Sydney University Women’s Rowing Club, Jeremy McGrath of Balmain Rowing Club, and Tom Schramko of Mosman Rowing Club. We are very pleased to recognise these outstanding young rowers and provide them with financial support.

The scholarships are funded mainly by the Union’s Scholarship Club scheme. This is a simple competition with a prize of $1,000 and through this scheme the Union raised $3,980 this year and $4,450 last year. The Union’s merchandise program is also a valuable source of funding, contributing $5,068 over the past two years.

Other activities this year included:

 A visit to the UTS Haberfield Rowing Club to inspect their new premises.  While at UTS we presented an Honorary Membership to the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of UTS, in recognition of the outstanding contribution that he and his University have made to rowing on the Haberfield site.  In conjunction with Rowing NSW, a bronze plaque was erected at Sydney International Rowing Centre to recognise the outstanding success of Australian Single Scullers over the period 1860 – 1960, including 15 World Professional champions, all from NSW. The Plaque also lists the Australian (and NSW) Gold Medal single scullers at Olympic, British Empire and Commonwealth Games, prior to the introduction of Annual World Championships in 1962.  A behind-the-scenes tour of the Sydney Cricket Ground and Sydney Football Stadium.

The Union is going through a period of change. At last Annual General Meeting Terry Maher, our Honorary Secretary, stepped down from the position, after many years’ of work for the Union, and the Union recognised his efforts by awarding him Life membership of the Union. Terry also stepped down from his role as Convenor of the J B Sharp Regatta Series. Our President Barbara Ramjan completed two years in the position, being the first President since we adopted a change in our Constitution that provides for a two-year period in office, a break from our custom of many years of rotating the presidency every year. Our new Honorary Secretary is Phil Titterton, while responsibility for conducting the Sharp Series regattas has now been taken up by Rowing NSW.

At next Annual General Meeting two of our long-serving members of the Executive Committee, Russell McLean and Geoff McIntyre, have indicated they will not seek re-election. Both have been very active in their efforts for the Union over many years and their efforts have been very much appreciated. They will be missed. The Union will need to rebuild the Committee with some younger members.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 30 NSW UNION OF OARSWOMEN Established in 1962 – Supporters of Schoolgirl’s Rowing and Women in Masters Rowing

The 2013-2014 season has proved to be exciting with the second Australian National/Samsung World Cup Regatta held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC) in March 2014 being the main highlight.

Volunteering

The Union has a strong commitment to supporting the sport of Rowing and this has been endorsed by our members keenly volunteering at the many regattas organised by Rowing NSW, Rowing Australia, the Association of Independent Schools and the NSW Combined High Schools Association. Once again, there was an opportunity to contribute as volunteers to the success of the National Regatta/Samsung World Cup 2014 at SIRC.

Schoolgirl Rowing

The NSW All Schools’ Schoolgirl Head of the River is always a highlight of the rowing year with many top class young rowers competing for prestigious trophies and for the honour of winning the regatta’s point score award. The First Eight trophy – the Rose Evans Memorial Trophy – was won by Queenwood School for Girls. The Open Single Sculls trophy – the Betty Spurling Memorial Trophy – was won by Kate O’Gorman from the Tara School.

The NSW Combined High Schools’ Championship Regatta was held over two days at SIRC. For many of the young rowers this was their first experience of competition at this international venue. Trophies donated by our Union were presented to the following race winners: Romola Davenport of Sydney Girls High School won the Merv Perry Trophy for the Championship Women’s Single Scull; Sydney Girls High School 1 won the Rita Goldie Memorial Trophy for Under 16 Coxless Quad Sculls; Sydney Girls High School 2 won the NSW Union of Oarswomen’s trophy for the Under 15 Coxless Quad Sculls; and Samantha Pett from Kelso High School won the NSW Union of Oarswomen’s trophy for the Under 16 Single Scull. Samantha is the Union’s youngest member. As this is the 125th year of the NSW School Sport Association, all medal winners received specially inscribed medals to commemorate this significant occasion.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 31 Masters Rowing

At the NSW Masters Championship Regatta held at SIRC on 17-18 May, 2014, our NSW Union of Oarswomen trophy for Champion Women’s D Grade was won by the Black Mountain 1 crew of Pam Nash, Cecile Young, Yvonne Poels and Jeannette Gasson. Two weeks earlier, this highly competitive crew had won silver at the Australian Masters Championships in South Australia.

Over recent years, our Union has offered a sponsorship for a woman in Masters Rowing to participate in the Rowing NSW’s Level 1 Coaching Course. In 2013-14, the successful candidate was Amy Greenlees from the University of NSW. Amy’s varied and active experiences in rowing and her commitment to coaching, injury prevention and recovery should make her an asset to any club. This sponsorship offer is available again in the 2014-15 season.

Rowing/Friendship Day

Our annual Friendship Day was held at Sydney Women’s/MLC Rowing Club at Abbotsford in early June. While the number of active rowers attending the day was limited, the camaraderie was uplifting. We are a small but committed group, who endeavour to promote and support women to be inspired and achieve their dreams and goals in rowing.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 34 CENTRAL DISTRICTS ROWING ASSOCIATION Regattas

Nine regattas including sprint and standard distance Championships were scheduled.

The Lake Macquarie Regatta was abandoned just prior to its start due to rough water conditions and the Endeavour Regatta was curtailed after 58 of the 84 races scheduled due to the extreme heat. All other regattas were conducted according to schedule.

Total seats entered for the nine regattas were 6,417 at an average of 713 seats per regatta, compared with an average of 678 per regatta in 2012/2013.

Boat Race Officials

The Association Policy of requiring competing Clubs to provide one BRO, resulted in sufficient BROs being available for all regattas, however, some delays are being experienced in converting Trainee BROs to Level 1 or Level 2 BROs.

Other Championship Regattas

Rowers from Central Districts achieved some good results at National and State level including:

 Odin Mackintosh of Newcastle Rowing Club was a member of the winning Men’s Under 19 Quad Scull at both the NSW and Australian Championships.  Newcastle Grammar won the NSW Championship Schoolboy .  CDRA crews won two Australian Masters Championships.  CDRA crews won eleven NSW Masters Championships.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 36 NORTHERN RIVERS ROWING ASSOCIATION This year has passed very quickly, without disruption.

In all, ten regattas have been held, and for the first time in a few years, without cancellations due to floods. Numbers of participants were fairly stable.

I thank Peter Faint for his mammoth efforts in organising them.

Results of the point score are:

Club: Tweed Heads Open: Lower Clarence Junior: Lower Clarence Masters: Murwillumbah Mixed: Murwillumbah Individual: Crystal Piper - Lower Clarence Men's Master 1x: Scott O'Reilly – Murwillumbah Women's Masters 1x: Keryn Saunders - Lower Clarence

The Head of the Clarence, Grafton, saw a huge regatta program, followed the next day by an equally large GRC regatta. More Brisbane clubs were represented at the weekend than before, matching the Sydney schools' participation. I believe that because of the number of entrants, plans for changes in marshalling of crews are being put into place.

The Head of the Tweed also continues to grow, also a credit to MRC.

NRRA held its annual Age and Masters Regattas on 2nd February and 16th March respectively. I thank MRC and Tim Rose in particular, for all the background organisation that was undertaken to hold these regattas. I also would like to acknowledge and thank those volunteers who helped at these regattas, those who combined racing and volunteering and especially those who spent the whole day helping out because it was required.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 37 As always, the BROs have performed at the very high standard to which we have become accustomed, and have done a fantastic job at all the club and NRRA regattas. Our thanks go to all of them for their time, effort and professionalism. At present, Grafton Rowing Club supplies the largest number of BROs. We need to encourage more people to take this role on, especially the more northern clubs of the region.

The affiliation fee levied on all clubs by NSW Rowing is now in place, set at $660.00, inclusive of GST. In September, 2013, Ivan Adlam, President of NSW Rowing, and Anthony Blower, CEO of NSW Rowing, travelled to Maclean to meet with NRRA for discussions regarding this, as well as looking to improve communication and relationships.

Because of these discussions, and to gain benefit from the levy, an educational day was held on 6th April at GRC. Alan Bennett, the NSW Rowing Sports Development Officer, undertook both an on- water coaching session and theoretical rowing stroke session in the morning, with lectures and practical sessions on rigging boats in the afternoon. The day was well attended, with very positive feedback. Other educational days are to be planned, with discussion to be undertaken on the frequency, topics to be presented and attendance fees.

Our thanks to GRC for holding the educational day as well as the loan of boats. Also thanks to those who organised breakfast, and thought through and arranged lunch. A special thanks to Di Foley for accepting the job of liaising with Alan Bennett and organising dates, topics and venue.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you for this year to my hard working committee.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 61 OBITUARIES We regret to report the deaths of the following members since our last report:

Bob Wickenden July 2013

Regretfully, Bob Wickenden passed away on July 10, aged 60.

Bob was a prominent senior oarsman in the early 1980s, winning the Champion Eight of NSW in 1981, 1982 and 1983, and rowing in the King’s Cup in 1982.

Bob was a permanent member of the NSW Union of Rowers, and his fellow members will always remember him for his friendly outgoing nature.

Bob Hammond July 2013

Rowing NSW informs our community of the passing of Bob Hammond, a stalwart member of Drummoyne Rowing Club.

Bob was an extremely keen masters rower, and recently had the honour of having a new Drummoyne eight christened after him.

He was known around the club as a level-headed gentlemen.

Bob will be remembered as the founder of the Ancient Mariners, the group of rowers who have never let age slow their passion for our sport.

Mert Lloyd July 2013

Mert Lloyd passed away on Wednesday, 24 July, 2013 aged 95.

Mert had been an enthusiastic, involved member of the rowing community and a devoted ‘Sydney girl’ for 80 years. She was the stroke of most Sydney Women’s crews during her long active career of over 20 years. Mert represented NSW as a rower in 1941 and several times as manageress. She coached many Sydney Women’s crews. Mert was the coxswain of a crew at the Centenary Regatta for Sydney Women’ Club at the age of 92.

Like many people in this sport, rowing was Mert’s life.

Erwin Eder August 2013

Erwin Eder (age 84 yrs.) passed away in hospital at Jindabyne.

Erwin had a most distinguished rowing career in the late 1940’s through to 1960 with Haberfield winning many State and Australian Championship races. He rowed in the all Haberfield Coxed Four in the British Empire Games in New Zealand in 1950 winning a silver medal.

Erwin had moved to Jindabyne many years ago where he lived with his wife Pam and we had not seen him at Haberfield for many years.

He was a champion bloke by any measure.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 62 Ian Morgan September 2013

We regret to inform the Rowing NSW community of the passing of Ian Morgan.

Ian passed away on the afternoon of Sunday, September 8.

He was a stalwart member of Haberfield Rowing Club, having joined in 1962.

Our condolences go out to Ian's family.

Jack Darby November 2013

Rowing NSW has received the sad news that Jack Darby passed away on November 26, at the age of 89.

Jack was a rower and active member of Sydney Rowing Club during the 1940s and '50s, and was a past captain of the club and board member.

He was a prominent supporter of Sydney Rowing Club's Rowers' Reunions, and chaired the group on various occasions.

Recently, Jack had been living on the Central Coast.

John Sypkens January 2014

John Sypkens died at a nursing home in the Dandenongs after a long illness on New Year’s Day.

Until quite recently John was a familiar face to be seen at the major Masters regattas. Based in Armidale and a stalwart of Armidale RC he rowed successfully at most NSW state and National Master Championships from the mid 1990’s till around 2010 when he retired from ill health. As a single sculler he was very difficult to beat and won the Champion of Champion sculls on several occasions at the National Masters. He is also the only person, of whom I am aware, who has won every category of boat at a National Masters regatta. He achieved this in the “G” category at Bundaberg winning 1x, 2x, 2-, 4x, 4- and VIII’s races as well as the Champion of Champion single sculls for that year.

He and his wife, Susan, had moved from Armidale to Victoria to be closer to other family members after he retired from active rowing. He would have been 80 this current year.

Rowing NSW Annual Report 2013-2014 Page 63 Stuart Evans February 2014

Stuart Evans, one of Mosman Rowing Club's Life Members, a long-serving club captain, a NSW coach and a long-term coach of Mosman Rowing Club passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday February 15 with his family at his side.

Stuart was a controversial character but a passionate, one-eyed Mosman supporter who had the ability to polarise people. However, no one could ever doubt his love of our great sport and his love of Mosman Rowing Club. Many of you will be familiar with the enormous contribution the Evans family has made to the Club and to rowing in this country.

After tragically losing his right arm in a motor vehicle accident after being named in the Australian VIII, he recovered, taught himself to become left handed and continued his trade as an electrician.

He was 77 years of age.

Jim Walker April 2014

Rowing NSW wishes to inform our community of the passing of Jim Walker.

Jim passed away peacefully on Friday, March 28. He was the patron of Drummoyne Rowing Club, and will be missed by many at the club.

Norm Cannon April 2014

Norm Cannon, a former lightweight champion and fixture at the UTS Haberfield Rowing Club, sadly passed away on Monday morning, April 28.

Norm joined Haberfield in 1945 and in 1947 was in the crew that won the State Lightweight Champs. He decided to have a crack at sculling and won the State championship in 1950.

The rowing season of 1950/51 became an incredibly successful time for Norm, not only winning the State Lightweight Sculls but also the heavyweight double sculls, the heavyweight champion four and then making the trip over to New Zealand with Kevyn Webb to win the Christchurch Centennial Games Double Scull Gold Medal and the NZ National Double Scull championship.

After retiring from rowing, Norm became involved in the Club administration and was a tireless worker right to the end.

Mal Shaw May 2014

It is with great sadness we received news from Anna Shaw that her husband Mal passed away on the morning of May 9 peacefully after a short struggle.

Mal was a Life Member of Mosman Rowing Club and a dual Olympian in the Australian 8+ at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. After his rowing career ended with a bad back, he switched to coaching and had many successes coaching women’s lightweight crews.

In later years he returned to New Zealand with his wife, Anna.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2014

1 STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Basis of Consolidation The financial statements consolidate the financial results of Rowing NSW Incorporated, and the LE Stepto Memorial Trust Fund. The Incorporated Association & its Controlled Entities together are referred to as the Economic Entity.

Basis of Accounting Rowing New South Wales Inc. is incorporated in the state of New South Wales under the Associations Incorporations Act 2009. The financial statements of the Economic Entity have been prepared as Special Purpose Financial Statements for use by the Board and Members of the Incorporated Association and for the purposes of complying with the New South Wales legislation the Associations Incorporation Act 2009. The financial statements have been prepared on the basis that the Economic Entity is not a reporting entity because there are unlikely to be any other users of the financial statements as all users can obtain information specific to their needs upon demand.

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the recognition and measurement requirements specified by the Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations issued by the Australian Accounting Standards Board ('AASB') and the disclosure requirements of AASB 101 'Presentation of Financial Statements', AASB 107 'Statement of Cash Flows', AASB 108 'Accounting Policies, Changes in Accounting Estimates and Errors' and AASB 1048 'Interpretation and Application of Standards'. These financial statements do not conform with International Financial Reporting Standards as issued by the International Accounting Standards Board ('IASB').

The financial statements have been prepared on an accruals basis and are based on historic costs and do not take into account changing money values or, except where specifically stated, current valuations of non-current assets. The preparation of the financial statements requires the use of certain critical accounting estimates. It also requires management to exercise its judgement in the process of applying the incorporated association's accounting policies. The areas involving a higher degree of judgement or complexity, or areas where assumptions and estimates are significant to the financial statements, are disclosed in note paragraph titled ‘Critical Accounting Adjustments’.

Financial Statements Preparation The classification “Members’ Accumulated Funds” is used in the financial statements as the Incorporated Association has no shareholders. It is believed the use of the classification “Equity” would be misleading as such no statement of equity has been prepared.

The following material accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of these financial statements.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2014

New Accounting Standards and Interpretations not yet mandatory or early adopted Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations that have recently been issued or amended but are not yet mandatory, have not been early adopted by the incorporated association for the annual reporting period ended 30 June 2014. The incorporated association has not yet assessed the impact of these new or amended Accounting Standards and Interpretations.

Income Tax The Incorporated Association is exempt from income tax by virtue of Section 50–45 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997. As such no provision for income tax has been made and tax-effect accounting has not been adopted.

Cash and Cash Equivalents Cash and short-term deposits in the Statement of Financial Position comprise cash at bank and on hand together with short-term deposits with an original maturity of twelve months or less.

Trade and Other Receivables Trade receivables, which generally have 90 day terms, are recognised and carried at original invoice amount less an allowance for doubtful debts.

An allowance for doubtful debts is made when there is objective evidence that the Economic Entity will not be able to collect the debts. Bad debts are written off when identified.

Property, Plant and Equipment Property, plant and equipment are brought to account at cost less where applicable any accumulated depreciation and any impairment of value. The carrying amount of property, plant and equipment is reviewed annually by the directors to ensure it is not in excess of the recoverable amount of those assets. The recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of expected net cash flows which will be received from the assets employment and subsequent disposal.

The depreciable amount of all property, plant and equipment, including building improvements, are depreciated over their useful lives commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use.

The depreciation is charged on a straight line basis and the following rates used for each class of asset are as follows:

Building Improvements 5% Boats, Motors and Equipment 9% - 33% Office Equipment and Fixtures 10% - 33% Motor Vehicles 12.5%

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2014

Leases The determination of whether an arrangement is or contains a lease is based on the substance of the arrangement and requires an assessment of whether the fulfilment of the arrangement is dependent on the use of a specific asset or assets and the arrangement conveys a right to use the asset.

A distinction is made between finance leases, which effectively transfer from the lessor to the lessee substantially all the risks and benefits incidental to ownership of leased assets, and operating leases, under which the lessor effectively retains substantially all such risks and benefits.

Finance leases are capitalised. A lease asset and liability are established at the fair value of the leased assets, or if lower, the present value of minimum lease payments. Lease payments are allocated between the principal component of the lease liability and the finance costs, so as to achieve a constant rate of interest on the remaining balance of the liability.

Leased assets acquired under a finance lease are depreciated over the asset's useful life or over the shorter of the asset’s useful life and the lease term if there is no reasonable certainty that the company will obtain ownership at the end of the lease term.

Operating lease payments, net of any incentives received from the lessor, are charged to profit or loss on a straight-line basis over the term of the lease.

Employee Benefits Provision is made, as a current liability, for the legal liability to permanent employees for annual leave and long service leave. Long service leave is not provided until a permanent employee attains five years continuous service. Sick leave is brought to account as incurred.

Contributions are made by the economic entity to nominated employee superannuation funds and are charged as expenses when incurred. Apart from statutory obligations the Association has no other legal obligation to provide benefits to employees on retirement.

Maintenance and Repairs Maintenance, repair costs and minor renewals are charged as expenses when incurred.

Critical accounting judgements, estimates and assumptions The preparation of the financial statements requires management to make judgements, estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts in the financial statements. Management continually evaluates its judgements and estimates in relation to assets, liabilities, contingent liabilities, revenue and expenses. Management bases its judgements, estimates and assumptions on historical experience and on other various factors, including expectations of future events, management believes to be reasonable under the circumstances. The resulting accounting judgements and estimates will seldom equal the related actual results. The judgements, estimates and assumptions that have a significant risk of causing a material adjustment to the carrying amounts of assets and liabilities within the next financial year are discussed below.

Estimation of useful lives of assets The economic entity determines the estimated useful lives and related depreciation and amortisation charges for its property, plant and equipment. The useful lives could change significantly as a result of technical innovations or some other event. The depreciation charge will increase where the useful lives are less than previously estimated lives, or technically obsolete or non-strategic assets that have been abandoned or sold will be written off or written down.
