John Young, from Lifesigns. by Peter Brockwell
The New Roxette meets… John Young, from Lifesigns. By Peter Brockwell For those new to your music can you give us a brief history of John Young? How long have you got…? I guess the best place to check it all out is www.johnyoungband.com but in a nutshell I started back in 85 with Uli Jon Roth , then worked with Asia , Paul Rodgers , Roy Wood, Bonnie Tyler, Mammoth, Greenslade, John Wetton, Qango, Fish, The Scorpions, The Strawbs and Snakecharmer . During the last 12 years or so I started playing and singing solo and then formed the JYB in 2002 and now finally through to Lifesigns . As for your latest project Lifesigns let's start off with an easy question. Who are Lifesigns? John Young (keys, vocals), Nick Beggs (bass, chapman stick, vocals) Frosty Beedle (drums) and Steve Rispin (sound). Sound engineer Steve Rispin is the silent contributor of Lifesigns. What do you see as his biggest contribution to the music on Lifesigns? Steve is as much a part of Lifesigns as any of us. He was there from my earliest composition ready to listen and help transform it into the beast it has become. He’s on hand for both audio and musical ideas and without him this CD would never have seen the light of day. Lifesigns is a slight departure from your previous work with the John Young Band so how did it come around? Well two fold really. I remember I felt a little under-whelmed by the neo-prog scene and just thought there could be something new that harked back to the halcyon days of prog, but also at the same time something that could bring it into the now. -
Dave Hartl's 2017 Top Ten (Or So) Most Influential Albums
Dave Hartl’s 2017 Top Ten (Or So) Most Influential Albums It’s time once again to look back and do that annual tradition of picking out the 10 or so most influential albums I heard in the past year. Not the most popular, or even the best, but what made me think the most as a musician. You can always go to http://www.davehartl.com/top10.html and look at other years’ postings. The links there go all the way back to 1998, when I started this with George Tucker. It’s a way of hearing about great music you might otherwise miss. If you want to contribute, please write to [email protected] with your own list and your contribution will be added to this document online for future downloads. This is why I do this! It always gives me some great recommendations for what to listen to that would be off my radar otherwise. So don’t be shy! Last year, Brian Groder, Jack Loughhead, and Kaz Yoshihara gave me some great things to listen to. 1.) John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension: Live at Ronnie Scott’s 2017 saw the farewell American tour of the great guitarist John McLaughlin, who joined up with fellow guitarist Jimmy Herring for an unbelievable 3-set night concluding with pieces from his old Mahavishnu Orchestra days (you can see an entire concert at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPWa9F4UBQQ&t=19s, highly recommended!). This CD was recorded in London with McLaughlin’s working band of the last decade, the 4th Dimension, about 7 months ahead of the aforementioned American tour, but it shows a microcosm of that concept, opening with 1971’s Meeting of the Spirits and working through pieces showcasing the amazing drummer Ranjit Barot and his Indian classical influences, bassist Etienne M’Bappé’s multilevel constructions, and Gary Husband’s otherworldly synth textures, blowout chops, and energetic drumming. -
Steven Wilson at the Colston Hall by the Bristol Post | Posted: January 27, 2016 by by Michael Scanlan
REVIEW: Steven Wilson at the Colston Hall By The Bristol Post | Posted: January 27, 2016 By By Michael Scanlan Steven Wilson at the Colston Hall YOU may have thought Prog Rock was dead. It ruled the world in the early 70s when bands like Yes, ELP and King Crimson strode the earth like mighty dinosaurs. Prog seemed to get swept away in the musical upheaval of Punk Rock, but really it just moved sideways into its own little niche. Currently the top dog in that little niche is probably Steven Wilson, who was at the Colston Hall on Tuesday night to show prog still rules for a lot of people. Far from a household name, Wilson is a very big fish in the progressive rock pond, but swims under the radar of mainstream recognition (to mix a metaphor or two). He's sold a shedload of albums, been four times nominated for the Grammy Awards and was crowned "King Of Prog Rock" in the 2015 Progressive Music Awards. He's also in great demand as remix producer of choice for all those top prog band of the 70s as they re-release now classic albums, revitalising recordings by Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and XTC, among others. The influences of Yes, Genesis, Crimson et al were present in Tuesday night's performance but there were plenty of more modern influences and creativity as the music swung from the melodic to hard-hitting – extremely hard-hitting – industrial metal. The first section of the close-to-three-hour concert was devoted to Wilson's latest album Hand. -
STEVEN WILSON – to the Bone Tour – Berlin, Tempodrom – 05
STEVEN WILSON – To The Bone Tour – Berlin, Tempodrom – 05. Für meine Begriffe schwächelt 'To The Bone' ein wenig. Es mangelt mir an mitreißenden Momenten, wie sie noch auf 'The Raven That Refused To Sing' und 'Hand. Cannot. Erased.' vorhanden waren. -

“Atheists and Believers”
“Atheists and Believers” Available as Ltd. Edition CD Digipak (with special packaging), 180g 2 LP Gatefold Edition (incl. etching on side 4 and the album on CD) and as Digital Album Release Date: March 22nd, 2019 The Mute Gods deliver hard-hitting message on future of the planet in Atheists and Believers Third album from Nick Beggs (Steven Wilson and Steve Hackett), Roger King (Steve Hackett) and Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats and The Sea Within) features guest appearances from Alex Lifeson, guitarist with Rush, drummer Craig Blundell (Frost* and Steven Wilson) and multi-instrumentalist Rob Townsend (Steve Hackett). As global populism continues to lead humanity down sinister, self-serving alleyways and truth is an irrelevance, does anyone have the capability of saving this planet? Have humans forgotten their responsibilities to each other, especially to those millions of people left homeless and displaced by conflict, while arms sales to warmongering nations carry on abated? These are some of the powerful themes that The Mute Gods put under the spotlight on Atheists and Believers . This is the third album in a trilogy of pulsating, turbulent rock compositions, that delves even deeper into the machinations that are driving mankind further towards an abyss of its own making. The metal-edged, menacing wake-up calls to humanity are tempered by three gentler, more sentimental compositions in which Beggs reflects on love and loss, mortality and marriage. “The album’s key message is that we now empower stupid people and don’t listen to educated, informed experts anymore because truth is no longer fashionable,” explains Beggs. -

Howard Jones Acoustic Trio Is an Intimate Stripped-Down Trip Through Howard's 30-Year Music Career
Howard Jones Acoustic Trio is an intimate stripped-down trip through Howard's 30-year music career. Featuring Howard on electric piano, Robin Boult (Roger Daltry, Dave Stewart, Fish) on acoustic guitar and Nick Beggs (Kajagoogoo, Belinda Carlisle, John Paul Jones) on chapman stick, these shows deliver a fresh take on Howard’s best-known hits. These shows also provide the opportunity for the audience to hear first-hand about the inspiration behind Howard’s beloved material as well as stories from his touring career. Electronic music pioneer Howard Jones has been a constant presence on the international touring scene for the past three decades, playing live in a number of different configurations including intimate solo shows and dates with his full high-tech band set-up. His most recent album is TRANSFORM, his first new studio album in nearly a decade. Released earlier this year (2019) to critical acclaim, TRANSFORM features several collaborations with electronica luminary BT. Of the album, Paste avowed, “TRANSFORM is remarkably consistent to Jones’ lush brand of synthpop…a balance of what is familiar and what is innovative, new magic from old spells” while Pop Matters declared the album to contain “dazzling synth sounds, catchy melodies and introspective and life- affirming lyrics - but with a contemporary feel”. Howard Jones first burst upon the contemporary music scene in 1983, with his very English songwriting and pioneering synthesizers. His first two albums HUMAN’S LIB and DREAM INTO ACTION were worldwide hits. HUMAN’S LIB reached #1 in 1984 in the UK and featured the hits “New Song,” and “What Is Love?” In 1985, Jones released the follow-up, DREAM INTO ACTION, which quickly became a Top Ten Platinum album in the United States and featured the smashes: “Things Can Only Get Better,” “Life In One Day,” “No One Is To Blame,” and “Like To Get To Know You Well.” Howard Jones has sold over 8 million albums worldwide and continues to make new music and tour the world. -
Steven Wilson
Três vezes indicado ao Grammy, ele apresenta ao público o aclamado álbum The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories), que recebeu ótimas críticas no mundo inteiro. -
Steven Wilson – the Future Bites
Nun hat Wilson sich also von seinem Prog-Rock-Monumentalwerk „The Raven That Refused to Sing“ entfernt – und zwar meilenweit!
