Hit Songs Deconstructed Deconstructing Today's Hits for Songwriting Success http://reports.hitsongsdeconstructed.com Penn's Pick: Genesis - Turn It On Again Artist: Genesis Song/Album: Turn It On Again / Duke Writers: Banks, Collins, Rutherford Year Released: 1980 Genres: Pop/Rock, Progressive Why it’s a “Penn’s Pick”: Artists and bands who attempt to transition from one style of music that their core fanbase have come to love and expect into a completely new direction is a risky gamble. Sometimes it works (Bob Dylan going electric, Avicii going Folk/EDM), sometimes it doesn’t (Judas Priest going Pop/Hair Metal in ’86), and in a recent case it’s still too early to tell (Katy Perry’s transition into a more “mature” direction with “Prism”). This is what Genesis encountered with their transition from the Art/Rock, Progressive natured Gabriel era into the more Straight-Up Pop Collins era. But unlike the abrupt shifts in style seen from Dylan, Priest and Avicii, Genesis chose to stretch the transition out over multiple albums to mitigate the shakeup. The culmination of these 2 distinct eras fusing together can be found on 1980?s “Turn It On Again.” Collin’s infectious, straight-ahead Pop/Rock natured vocal was primed for mass appeal, while Rutherford and Banks provided an unconventional song structure, progression and time signature combo that remained in-line with their progressive roots. Combined, the song took on a unique quality that enabled it to stand out from the pack and resonate on a wide scale, ultimately becoming one of the band’s most beloved and requested songs within their 40+ year catalog. Now, was everyone at the time happy with the band’s new direction? Of course not. Diehard fans of “The Return Of The Giant Hogweed” and “Get ‘Em Out By Friday” probably wanted nothing to do with the with the new Pop nature of their sound. One thing is undeniable, however – they achieved much greater $uccess with their Pop direction than they did with their progressive – for better or worse. Personally, “Turn It On Again” is one of my favorite all-time songs, but then again, so is “The Return Of The Giant Hogweed!” 1 / 1 Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org).

This article uses several sources, including music paper cuttings, websites and books, to try and determine the most likely release date in the UK for their officially released product issued between 1968 and 1978. For a detailed analysis to be completed beyond 1978 will require the input of others that know that era far better than I, with the resources to examine it in an appropriate level of detail. My own collection of source material essentially runs dry around 1978.

‘R-Kive’ enthält in chronologischer Reihenfolge die größten Hits von Genesis, darunter ‘Invisible Touch’, ‘Turn It On Again’, ‘Land of Confusion’ und ‘I Can’t Dance’.
  • MARK SPICER Genesis's Foxtrot* One of the Most Ironic

MARK SPICER Genesis's Foxtrot* One of the Most Ironic

MARK SPICER Genesis’s Foxtrot* One of the most ironic developments in Billboard chart history occurred in July 1986, when Genesis, basking in the success of having finally scored their first (and only) U.S. #1 hit with Invisible Touch were knocked out of the top spot just one week later by their former frontman Peter Gabriel, who, in turn, scored his first (and only) U.S. #1 with Sledgehammer. While I must admit to having a personal affection for their later records, I think it is safe to say that most fans would prefer to forget the slick, synthesizer-driven pop that characterized much of Genesis’s output in the 1980s and 1990s, and instead look back fondly to the first half of the 1970s — the golden age of British progressive rock — when the group was famous for crafting epic rock pieces in which the multiple shifts of texture, affect, tonality and groove echo those typically found, say, in a large-scale symphonic work by Liszt or Holst. Like Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP), Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Soft Machine, Henry Cow, and their other compatriots in British progressive rock during this remarkable period, Genesis did not set out to create music that was immediately catchy or danceable (although one can certainly imagine dancing, however awkwardly, to many of their odd-metered grooves). Theirs was serious music intended for serious listeners. Indeed, as John Covach has put it, “there was the perception [among fans] that these musicians were attempting to shape a new kind of classical music — a body of music that would not disappear after a few weeks or months on the pop charts, but would instead be listened to (and perhaps even studied), like the music of Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms, for years to come.” (Covach, 1997: 4) Figure 1 shows a chronology of Genesis albums released through October 1977, when guitarist Steve Hackett left the group and the three remaining members decided to continue as a trio.

Leland Sklar and Daryl Stuermer (Phil Collins, Genesis)

Leland Sklar and Daryl Stuermer (Phil Collins, Genesis) on their careers, Phil Collins‘ „Not Dead Yet“- tour, future projects and why it’s still exciting to be a musician after 50 years in the business »Everyday is an adventure. That’s why you stick around. You never know what tomorrow will bring.« Leland Sklar, Philipp Röttgers, Daryl Stuermer Leland Sklar and Daryl Stuermer are living legends. Leland Sklar is a bass player and one of the most sought-after session musicians in the world. „Father Time“, as he is also called, has played with pretty much every big artist since the beginning of his career in 1970. He can be heard on more than 800 albums and has played on over 3000 songs. His references include Jackson Browne, Carole King, James Taylor, Toto and of course Phil Collins, for whom he has been playing since 1984 (in alternation with Nathan East, who accompanied Collins on bass in the 1990s). Sklar plays on hits like ‚Sussudio‘, ‚Another Day In Paradise‘ and accompanies Phil Collins on his „Not Dead Yet!“ tour, which started in 2017 and is still running. Daryl Stuermer joined Genesis in 1978 as a live guitarist. In the studio the band consisted of Tony Banks (keyboards), Mike Rutherford (guitar and bass) and Phil Collins (vocals and drums), for live performances they were joined by drummer Chester Thompson and Stuermer, who alternated guitar and bass with Mike Rutherford. When Genesis go on tour, Stuermer is the one who teaches them the songs again. When Phil Collins began his solo career in 1981, Daryl Stuermer was also involved as guitarist and is still the only constant member of Collins‚ solo band.
