The Provincial Food Security Cluster Meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Ashraf Ali FSC Co-lead from Introduction of the UNFAO, Mr. Hassan Mangrio (focal person-FSC) from UNWFP and Mr. Noor Ahmed Soomro Deputy Participants Director animal Husbandry from Livestock department. Dr. Muhammad Mubarik Jatoi from Livestock department and Mr. Nadeem Ahmed Korie from Agriculture Extension Department Sindh participated in the meeting as departmental representatives. The meeting started with brief introduction of participants along with their associate organization. The participant organizations were ACF, Save the Children, Islamic Relief, Oxfam GB, ACTED, IRC (International Rescue Committee), AHD, NWO, Government Line Departments (Livestock and Agriculture), Caritas Pakistan, HANDS, ASLP (Agriculture Sector Linkage Program), Tear Fund, UNWFP, PEHE, IMMAP, SDS and UNFAO. Updates from cluster The updates were shared by participants on planned and ongoing Food Security projects of their members: ongoing and respective organizations under ER 2011 are as under: planned projects. Oxfam GB representative shared that currently we are implementing the CR project in North Sindh. Under this project total 900 HH’s are being assisted through cash for work modality in UC Aakhero of District Kashmore. The PEFSA IV project will start from 01/04/2013 in two districts; one from south and one from north Sindh and total 6300 HH will be targeted. In District Tando Allahyar (UC Chamber, Piaro Lund, Dhingano, Buakira Sharif and Pak Singhar) this project will be implemented through Research and Development Foundation (IP). Under this project 2100 HH’s will be targeted in which 1500 HH will be receive assistance for kitchen gardening and provision of livestock and 600 HH will be targeted for establishment of backyard poultry form followed by the trainings of kitchen gardening training, livestock training and poultry training. In District Kashmore (UC Kajli, Aakhero, Risaldar, Cheel, Doulatpur and Kumb) this project will be implemented through Indus Resource Centre (IP). Total 4200 HH’s will be received assistance in which of 1700 HH for conditional cash grants, 1700 HH for Cash for Work and 800 HH will be targeted for establishment of backyard poultry form with poultry training." . ACTED representative shared that we will implement the PEFSA IV project in district Mirpurkhas (UC Makhan Samo), Umerkot (UC Pithoro) and Sanghar (Dhilyar). These are tentative UC’s and will be finalized after consultation with the district authorities. Under this project the assistance will be provided for the vegetable gardening and backyard poultry/goats (as per choice of the community) followed by trainings. In North Sindh ACTED is working in district Jacobabad (UC Sher wah and Garhi Hassan) and in District Kashmore(UC Lashari and Cheel) for the provision of Conditional Cash Grants (CCG) and Cash for Work CFW activities followed by Nutrition training. International Rescue Committee representative shared that we have finished the activities under the FSL integrated project in district Shikarpur (UC Bhambiar). Now IRC is implementing the ERF funded project in UC Rahimabad and Karan of District Shikarpur. Under this project the support will be given under CFW and conditional cash grants. The PEFSA IV project will be implemented in district Shikarpur (Rahimabad and Karan) and in Mirpurkhas (UC Dangan Bhurgri and Girhore Sharif). Under the PEFSA IV project the support will be given for vegetable gardening and backyard poultry followed by trainings. Association for Human Devlopment (AHD) representative shared that currently we are providing support in vegetable gardening in UC Matli District Badin. Caritas Pakistan representative shared that we implemented/implementing the wheat seed bank , livestock vaccination and livestock management project along with other livelihood activities. Health and nutrition Development Society (HANDS) representative shared that we worked in district Kashmore and Jacobabad as an IP of WFP in general Food Distribution. In southern part we worked as IP of FAO and provided the agriculture inputs. Currently with FAO we are providing the fruit trees in district Matiari, Sanghar and tando allahyar. Under this project six nursery plants (3 mango, 1 Guava and 1 Chicku) is being given to every targeted HH; the end date of the project is 31st of March. The total beneficiaries under this project are 2500, Challenge: In the mango distribution we have faced the influence for the distribution to the big landlords. Australia Pakistan Agriculture Sector Linkage program (ASLP) project “Strengthening dairy value chains in Pakistan through improved farm management and more-effective extension services” at Badin and Thatta. The below are the objectives of the project: 1- To determine the most effective manner in which the extension approach from LPS/2005/132 can be scaled-out with a lower level of direct supervision to different areas of Pakistan. 2- To develop and promote strategies for optimizing feed resources for small-holder dairy farmers. 3- To identify and promote profitable new strategies for calf rearing. 4- To identify and promote strategies for improving smallholder profitability through marketing opportunities of a higher quality product. 5- To build the capacity of future and current extension and industry personnel driving the production and marketing of milk from the farm to the consumer. Tear Fund representative shared that we are implementing the Food security project in UC Sheikh Bhirkio District Tando Muhammad Khan. The duration of this project is Oct 2012 to Oct 2013. Under this project the 1900 beneficiaries received the 5,100 goats. The other project is of CFW livelihood project; with focus on the DRR component. Challenge: lack of Veterinary support for the targeted HH’s . SDS representative shared that our organization is women targeted. As I have recently joined the organization and now I am familiar with the cluster system, in the coming meeting I will share the updates ion FS project. Islamic Relief representative shared that currently we are implementing the development project in district Thatta UC Jati and kothi. Under this project the activities are; microenterprise development 100 beneficiaries, vocational training for 300 beneficiaries, scholarship program 214 beneficiaries, CMST and LMST training total 10, Formal Training of interest group for formation of Business association 10, Grants for business association setups 10, exposure visits 3, training manual development 500, workshops on linkage development3. He further shared that we are implementing the shelter and livelihood integrated project funded by CAFFOD. Under this project in livelihood support will be given to 200 beneficiaries; 100 beneficiaries in kitchen gardening and 100 beneficiaries in rice input support. He further shared that we have been awarded 3years DFID project. Challenge: Mobility in some of the areas, political instability and the strikes. IMMAP representative shared that we are providing the support to humanitarian organization in Maps, ToT programs. He further mentioned the links for the registration of the interested partners in the upcoming training programs on information management and the DRR. Save The Children representative shared that we are implementing the FSL projects in Jacobabad in North, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas and Badin of lower Sindh. In lower Sindh under the PEFSA IV we will provide support for Livestock and back yard poultry. He further highlighted the key challenges in the project because of technicalities (like in poultry disease, environment and breed) and requested the govt: departments for their technical assistance to overcome these problems and making the intervention successful and viable for the beneficiaries. Data from mobile teams is reported Suspected Diphtheria through sponsoring BHU or RHC. Suspected Pertussis Acute Watery Diarrhoea Bloody diarrhoea • A total of 689,606 consultations were reported through DEWS of which 23% were acute Other Acute Diarrhoea respiratory infections (ARI); 6% were acute diarrhoea; 4% were suspected malaria; while 4% were Suspected Enteric/Typhoid Fever Skin disease.
