Nametoko Valley is a popular sightseeing spot located in the upper stream of the Shimanto River, featuring a series of waterfalls and beautiful riparian trees such as the Quercus salicina and Machilus thunbergii. The national park is also home to Kongofukuji Temple, which is said to have been established by infl uential Buddhist monk Kobo-Daishi (774‒835) and is one of the Shikoku Eightyeight Sacred Temples. Visitors can make pilgrimages to Gassan Shrine and Sasayama Shrine, which are included in the Shikoku Bekkaku 20 temples, and cultural traditions such as osettai, an off ering of food and drink to pilgrims, are still carried out along the pilgrimage route. -
