But the policy tends to focus just on technology and its applications. But not in Eind- hoven. Enabling as technology is to help solve societal chal- lenges, it will not be enough to create a liveable city; let alone a city we actually want to live in. And the last is exactly what this day and age is offerening us. We are able to, no, obliged to rethink what we see as quality of life, to reinvent what kind of society we want to be, redicide what we want our city to be. Essentially these are cultural questions with a big ethical component. The technology of today makes new answers possible. But it also has literally to take form in actual lives, in our actual city. That was why we embraced the work- shops. To explore physical scenarios of life in the city and the transformation of our city in different domains. -

De Ijzeren Man (The Iron Man): Rise and Decline of a Dutch Water Name JOHANNES A. HUISMAN bE TOWN OF 'S- HERTOGENBOSCH ("The Duke's Wood" - also known by the French name Bois-le- Duo in the English -speaking world) is situated in the southern part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, a few miles from the Maas River. Originally a hunting castle of the Dukes of Brabant, built in the midst of s,vampy woodlands, it developed into a formidable fortress, a heavily fortified triangular city. It could easily be rendered almost impregnable by inundating the surrounding marshlands. After the Franco-German war of 1870 -71 the old European fortresses lost their strategic importance: the walls were demolished, the cities got rid of their irksome armor! and started the expansion which is now undergoing an embarrassing acceleration. 's-Hertogenbosch could not expand unless the adjacent fields were sub- stantially raised. In the late eighties the railway, steadily creeping for- ward on the continent, had reached the town. The station had to be located outside the former walls on the north side of the fortress, the sand required for the purpose being obtained from the higher diluvial grounds of Vught, son'le three miles south of the city. Starting in 1880, an artificial lake ,vas dug, initially by hand, later on by means of a huge steampowered excavator. This onlinous monster made people jobless. They named it De IJzeren Man (The Iron Man).2This name was extended to the ever-growing lake. In 1896 the first living area outside the old city was realized. -

Abstract: Background: The literature reports that the use of healthcare services in urban areas compared to rural areas and by females compared to males is often higher. The aim of this study is to evaluate equity on geographical living area and gender for the use of primary and secondary healthcare in Suriname. Methods: We used 5,671 records (99%) from the Suriname Health study which was designed according to World Health Organization (WHO) Steps guidelines. We evaluated the Prevalence Ratio (PR) for living area and gender in using primary (PHC) and secondary healthcare (SHC) adjusted for the perceived need for healthcare, socio-economic factors and disease factors and the effect of all factors was measured. Results: Overall a percentage of 46.7 (95% Confidence Interval (CI) 45.1–48.4) had used primary healthcare and 12.7 (95% CI 11.6–13.8) secondary healthcare in the past 12 months. The PR for males compared to females was 0.75 (95% CI 0.70–0.81) for primary healthcare and 0.82 (95% CI 0.69–0.98) for secondary healthcare. -

According to research of TechLeap.NL, only 0.8% of investments (from 2008 to 2019) into Dutch startups and scaleups, including venture capital, was invested in female-founder teams and 4.9% in mixed teams. This shows a decline from previous research conducted by Janneke Niessen and Eva de Mol. That’s why it is so important that over 30 progres- sive VCs decided to take action by setting up #Fundright, as a foundation for tangible change. They commit to a diversity statement that will ensure that founders of startups in the Netherlands have equal access to funding regardless of their gender. With #FundRight they also show what can happen when the debate on diversity in entrepreneurship is mainly focused on opportunities. Mixed teams outperform mono-teams and VCs and startups that embrace diversity make themselves more versatile, resilient and stronger. So why should you, as an investor, not reap the rewards of this? That’s why, with this book, we want to focus on the opportunities for VCs and startups with diverse teams by showcasing 200 promising Dutch start- ups with at least one female in the founding team. The Netherlands (Nederlanden) The Netherlands is a constitutional democracy comprised of the 12 provinces of Groningen, Friesland, Drente, Overijssel, Flevoland, Gelderland, Utrecht, North-Holland, South-Holland, Zealand, North Brabant, and Limburg. Two of these provinces, North- and South- Holland, collectively make up Holland. Because of the maritime and economic might of these two provinces during the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century, the Netherlands came to be known internationally as Holland. Although The Netherlands is still frequently referred to as Holland, the official name of the country is the (Kingdom of the) Netherlands. The name reflects that it is a low-lying country, with 1/3 of its territory below sea level. In the UK, The Netherlands is occasionally called the "low countries," and the French and Spanish names for The Netherlands are a literal translation of that. In Dutch, the country is called either "Nederland" (pronounced NA-DER-LAHNT) or its official name, "Koninkrijk der Nederlanden," which means Kingdom of the Netherlands. Opportunities for creating abundance of drinking water Research in the water domain to create a knowledge base for the creative industries; a collaboration between the World Design Embassy of Water and Design United 12-16-2020 Design United: Stijn van Terwisga, TUD Xiaomeng Zhou, WUR Pim de Jager, WUR In cooperation with the Design Embassy of Water: Anouk van der Poll, vanderPolloffice, Waterboard De Dommel, province of Noord- Brabant, Brabant Water and the municipality of Eindhoven Summary In this research, the availability of drinking water has been investigated to identify opportunities for the creative industry to contribute to challenges that occur in the water sector. There is a general perception that people use too much water in all sectors. Currently, governmental organizations ask water users to change their behaviour during periods of drought, by limiting permits for irrigation and asking households to reduce drinking water consumption. When looking at the yearly trend of water availability in the Netherlands, we see water shortages summer and spring and water abundance in winter and fall. This leads to the question whether there is sufficient water to sustain the current usage, even in dry periods, in the long-term. In this research, we will investigate how large these water abundances and shortages are and in what ways this abundance can be converted to sufficient water for end-users. The province North Brabant is the research area in this report, because the partners of the Embassy of Water are located here. Drinking water is produced from groundwater in North Brabant; therefore, the groundwater system has been investigated in more detail.
