October 1989 ISSN 0114-2798 ISBN 0-478-01144-X LEPIDOPTERA, CICADIDAE, ACRIDIDAE OF THE MANORBURN ECOLOGICAL DISTRICT by B H Patrick Conservancy Advisory Scientist, Department of Conservation, Otago Regional Conservancy, Box 5244, Dunedin ABSTRACT As part of a formal survey of the Manorburn Ecological District, entomological records from localities within the district were pooled and analysed. A total of 201 species of Lepidoptera, four species of Acrididae and one species of Cicadidae are here recorded from the district. Although no species were found or are known to be endemic to this ecological district, several nationally rare species and many undescribed species are recorded here for the district. The entomological list reflects an even spread of collecting sites from the montane valleys to the alpine grasslands on the highest parts of the district. Biogeographically the insect fauna has close affinities with the Rock and Pillar/Lammermoor Ranges to the east but with some similarity also to the fauna of Mt Benger/Old Man Range to the south. Unlike each of those areas though, it is not an area of high diversity but does contain some important features such as saltpans, tors, shrubland, alpine grassland and cushion field with a highly interesting attendant insect fauna. -

North, South and Stewart Islands HABITAT Coastal to montane (up ot 1000 m a.s.l.) mainly in indigenous forest, also in gumland scrub, peat bogs and within the more fertile lag zone of wetland margins. Photographer: Jeremy Rolfe FEATURES Terrestrial, tuberous, glabrous, spring to summer-green perennial herb, mostly solitary or forming small patches of 3-5 plants through vegetative extension. Plant at flowering 10-330 mm tall. Stem erect, smooth, dark green, to reddish green, internodes < leaves. Leaves strictly erect, up to 4-6(-8), with entire margins, size changing from base to top of stem; the largest leaf on stem 80-150 x 5-10 mm, usually smaller, green to yellow-green, all linear- lanceolate, keeled with long-acuminate apices, widest near the sessile sheathing base, overtopping the flower. Flower solitary, usually tipping slightly forwards, small and delicate, front closely striped dark green and white, back of galea sparingly striped with green, mostly completely white. Ovary erect. Dorsal sepal 18-30 mm tall, erect then sharply horizontal, bearing few, widely spaced bands of green, the spacing of these widening toward rear to leave broad white bands or a completely white back; apex distinctly down-curved, acuminate to shortly caudate; lateral sepals diverging at a narrow angle, initially erect, apex curved to the front of galea, acuminate, shortly caudate, overtopping galea. -
Orchids of the Wellington District
Orchids of the Wellington District A. P. DRUCE The hills around Wellington have at the present time one of the richest orchid floras in New Zealand. Only the Auckland district surpasses Wellington. Yet few people are aware of this and fewer still have searched closely for these fascinating plants. It is not surprising therefore that several of the orchids growing about Wellington have remained unrecorded for a long time. Altogether forty-two orchid species and varieties are now known from this district. For the purpose of this article the Wellington district is taken to include all the Rimutakas, all the western hills and to extend up to the tops of the Tararua Mountains. Very few orchids are found on the western hills (i.e., the hills to the west of the Hutt Valley and Wellington Harbour) from Cook Strait north to about Haywards. Mixed bush clothed these hills originally—beech was absent. The soils differ from those across the harbour and second-growth is more often tauhinu than manuka. In some way or other the conditions are not right for most of the orchids. Over the rest of the district however, wherever manuka holds sway there are large numbers of orchids of many species. Samson's section at Pinehaven for instance over twenty species may be found and a sample area nearby showed that at least 10,000 indi- vidual orchids grow per acre in that locality. There cannot have been anything like these numbers a century ago for most of the manuka land was in bush and the orchids of the bush, besides being different, are comparatively few in number. -

Virtually confined to kauri (Agathis australis (D.Don) LIndl.) dominated forest where it usually found growing in leaf litter close to the trunks of large kauri trees. FEATURES Terrestrial tuberous herb growing as solitary plants or in diffuse colonies. Plants dimorphic. Sterile plants 60-100 mm tall; 2-3-leaved; leaves narrowly linear-lanceolate, 30-60 x 3-6 mm, dark green, entire, acute to acuminate. Flowering plants 100-350 mm tall, stems green or pale green, rarely reddish. Leaves 3-4, cauline, widely spaced, spreading; lamina narrowly lanceolate, 40-100 x 5-8 mm, dark green or pale green, sessile, sheathing at base; midrib prominent; margins entire; apex acuminate. Pedicels 10 mm long, slender. Ovary 9-12 mm long, ribbed. Flowers 1(-2), 24-28 mm long, erect or slightly leaning forwards, translucent white and dark green with red brown suffusions at the apex of the galea and lateral sepals; galea gibbous at the base then erect before bending forwards, the apex flat, erect or decurved, the dorsal sepal much longer than the petals. -
Genitalia, Classification and Zoogeography of the New Zealand Hepialid Ae (Lepidoptera)

DUMBLETON, Entomology Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Christchurch (Received for publication 9 May 1966) Summary Some morphological characters of taxonomic importance in the Hepialidae are briefly reviewed. The male genitalia of all existing New Zealand species are described, and the female genitalia of all except one species. The New Zealand species, with the exception of one species of Aenetus Herrich-Schaeffer (= Charagia Walker) and the species transferred to Wiseana Viette, were previously placed in Oxycanus Walker (= Porina Walker, preoccupied). The subfamily Hepialinae in New Zealand includes the non-endemic genus Aenetus and the endemic genus Aoraid gen. n. which has four species. Oxycaninae subfam. n., with Oxycanus as type genus, is defined on venational characters. It includes the endemic genera Wiseana (5 spp.), Trioxycanus gen. n. (3 spp.), Dioxycanus gen. n. (2 spp.), and Cladoxycanus gen. n. (1 sp.). The New Zealand hepialid fauna has its strongest affinities with that of Australia. The present distributions of the species are largely explicable as modification of late- Tertiary distributions resulting from oscillations of climate in the Pleistocene. INTRODUCTION The identification of the species of Hepialidae in New Zealand, except for the work of Philpott (1927a), has been based largely on the colour pattern of the scales of the fore wing. This is extremely variable and for most species there is no satisfactory evidence as to the range of intra- specific variation in this chaarcter and the possible overlapping of the ranges of variation of closely related species. -

Photo: Jeremy Rolfe. New Zealand Threat Classification Series is a scientific monograph series presenting publications related to the New Zealand Threat Classification System (NZTCS). Most will be lists providing NZTCS status of members of a plant or animal group (e.g. algae, birds, spiders). There are currently 23 groups, each assessed once every 3 years. After each 3-year cycle there will be a report analysing and summarising trends across all groups for that listing cycle. From time to time the manual that defines the categories, criteria and process for the NZTCS will be reviewed.
