Pastor’s Letter Dear Friends, 26th Week in Ordinary Time (September 26, 2021)

Saint Paul in his letter advises his colleague Timothy, “But you, man of God, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.” As we see in Saint Paul’s letter to his friend, the spiritual life entails not only encouraging one another to avoid or overcome unhealthy habits or sinful patterns of living, but also encouraging one another to pursue and acquire good habits or virtues.

The Christian life entails acquiring virtues and living virtuously. Pre-eminent of all virtues are the three theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity, which are acquired by the Christian as a gift from God at Baptism and which grow with each increase of grace from the worthy reception of every sacrament. Worthily receiving the or Holy Communion increases our theological virtues—giving us greater faith, hope and charity.

On the other hand, the cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance, which are also necessary for a life of holiness, are acquired naturally by the repeated good acts of the related virtue. For example, when we act temperately—taking the right amount of food and drink at the right time and in the right manner—repeatedly, we acquire gradually the noble habit (virtue) of temperance.

One spiritual custom, which assists us in acquiring virtues and made famous by Saint Ignatius Loyola, is the Particular Examen. In the spiritual exercise of the Particular Examin, we identify each morning a particular virtue that we desire to acquire, viz., patience, courage, devotion in prayer, humility, or kindness in speech. In the morning, we ask God for the grace that day to grow in the particular virtue. Then, twice a day, right before lunch and dinner, we pause in prayer to look back over the prior period to identify any moments in the day when we failed in that particular virtue. Seeing that we failed in the particular virtue, we ask God’s forgiveness, and we ask for God’s grace to help us acquire the new virtue, resolving again with God’s grace to strive to overcome our failures by acting in accord with that particular virtue. It is this twice daily review (or the Examen) of our day’s actions along with our resolve which helps us to overcome our faults and acquire the desired particular virtue and holiness. I encourage everyone to pick a virtue for month of October and ask God each morning to give us the grace of this particular desired virtue. I encourage the good practice of the daily Particular Examen for our spiritual growth and well-being.

This past Tuesday evening, we were happy to welcome Iraq War veteran and newly ordained priest Fr. Mark Tobin for Eucharistic Exposition, Adoration, and Benediction. The Holy is the Church’s greatest treasure and any increase in our knowledge, understanding, appreciation, and love of our Lord in the Eucharist assists us in our growth in holiness.

More and more people are experiencing an increase in stress, anxiety, and preoccupation with worldwide matters and family concerns. Our wellbeing also entails our mental wellbeing. Not all the illnesses that impact us and our loved ones are purely physical. Those who suffer from psychological challenges and mental illness need our loving support and caring assistance. I am happy to offer, for your consideration, our Family Faith Formation series entitled The Sanctuary Course: Exploring the Intersection of Faith and Mental Health. On four Wednesday evenings (viz., September 29, October 6, October 13, and October 20), you are invited to join us remotely from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Our moderator Matt Robinson, who has a master’s degree in pastoral counseling, will lead us to a richer understanding and deeper appreciation of the challenges of mental illness and the hope, which our faith offers in the midst of these challenges.

Next Monday, we celebrate the wonderful feast of Saint , the thirteenth century affluent and well-educated man, who upon reflection of his own life, decided that he wanted to live more deliberatively the Gospel values—to live more intensely the Gospel virtues. His close imitation of Jesus Christ led Saint Francis to be graced with the stigmata, the five wounds of Jesus. Saint Francis of Assisi was the first of what would be over 60 saintly persons who have been graced with the charism of the stigmata, including most recently (Saint Pio of Pietrelcina). Because of his love for God’s creation and creatures, Saint Francis is the of Animals. Saint Francis’ witness and writings help us appreciate the beauty and grandeur of God’s creation, which offers traces of the beauty and grandeur of God, the Author of the Universe. It is also a marvel to behold the diversity of God’s creations –with over 1,000, 000 species of animals and over 1,000,000 species of plants—which each in their own way reflect God’s glory. All families are welcome to bring their family pets for a special blessing of animals on Sunday, October 3, 2021 at 11:30 AM in the Parish Parking Lot. All are most welcome to join us in celebrating God’s gift of creation. Let’s us strive together to grow in holiness! More good things to come! Have a blessed week ahead!

Yours truly in Christ Jesus, Fr. Bill Donovan, Pastor Parish Happenings

6 September 26, 2021 Spiritual Enrichment FOR US! Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael Feast: September 29

These archangels, messengers sent by God, are the only ones named in the . In the Book of Daniel, Michael is called “the great prince”; in the Letter of Jude, he argues with the devil over Moses’ body; and in the Book of Revelation, he leads the battle against Satan. He is patron of the sick, police officers, and mariners. Gabriel explains Daniel’s visions in the Book of Daniel. In the Gospel of Luke, Gabriel announces to Zechariah and Mary the births of their respective sons. He is the patron of messengers and telecommunications and postal workers. Raphael guides Tobiah in the Book of Tobit; he is patron of the blind, physicians, and travelers.

Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael—Pray for us!

“O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.” - Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

PICK OF THE WEEK Audio Book—Brother Francis: The Barefoot Saint of Assisi

If you think you know Francis of Assisi, you're in for a surprise. Dis- cover the astonishing life of Brother Francis, the fun-loving son of wealth and privilege who gave up everything for the sake of Christ. As a young soldier, he encountered suffering. As a victim of war, he began a search for inner meaning that would redirect his life. As a holy beg- gar, he embraced lepers, shook hands with the Pope, debated a Sultan, and touched the lives of millions.

USCCB Priesthood Sunday: Sunday, September 26, 2021 Did you know this weekend is Priesthood Sunday, a special day set aside to honor priesthood in the United States? It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priest as central to the life of the Church. This weekend, let us pray for all priests, but especially those who currently minister to us at SJV. As a community of faith we pray: In your loving kindness, O good and gracious God, you sent your Son to be our shepherd and guide. May our pastor, Fr. Donovan, and our weekend assistant, Fr. Baker, continue Christ's ministry of working in the vineyard by sustaining and guiding your holy people. Bless Fr. Donovan and Fr. Baker. Let your Spirit uphold them always in their service to the people of this parish. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time 7 Spiritual Enrichment

The Priesthood: A Short Refresher As we celebrate Priesthood Sunday, this is a good opportunity to refresh ourselves on the role and importance of the priesthood in the life of the Church! The Priesthood in Brief from the Catechism of the 1591 The whole Church is a priestly people. Through Baptism all the faithful share in the priesthood of Christ. This participation is called the "common priesthood of the faithful." Based on this common priesthood and ordered to its service, there exists another participation in the mission of Christ: the ministry conferred by the sacrament of , where the task is to serve in the name and in the person of Christ the Head in the midst of the community. 1592 The ministerial priesthood differs in essence from the common priesthood of the faithful because it confers a sacred power for the service of the faithful. The ordained ministers exercise their service for the People of God by teaching (munus docendi), divine worship (munus liturgicum) and pastoral governance (munus regendi). 1593 Since the beginning, the ordained ministry has been conferred and exercised in three degrees: that of bishops, that of presbyters, and that of . The ministries conferred by ordination are irreplaceable for the organic structure of the Church: without the bishop, presbyters, and deacons, one cannot speak of the Church (cf. St. Ignatius of Antioch, Ad Trall. 3,1). 1595 Priests are united with the bishops in sacerdotal dignity and at the same time depend on them in the exercise of their pastoral functions; they are called to be the bishops' prudent co- workers. They form around their bishop the presbyterium which bears responsibility with him for the particular Church. They receive from the bishop the charge of a parish community or a determinate ecclesial office. 1597 The sacrament of Holy Orders is conferred by the laying on of hands followed by a solemn prayer of consecration asking God to grant the ordinand the graces of the Holy Spirit required for his ministry. Ordination imprints an indelible sacramental character.

Archdiocese and Other News

Respect Life Sunday Next Sunday, October 3, the Church celebrates Respect Life Sunday (as well as Respect Life Month which begins in October). Next weekend, we will have a spe- cial second collection for local pro-life efforts throughout the Archdiocese of Phil- adelphia. Note, that there is no official envelope for this collection. If you wish to donate, please put cash in the second collection or a check with “Respect Life Col- lection” in the memo. Let us continues to pray for an end to abortion and for the protection of life in all stages! Dear St. Joseph, Defender of Life, We praise God that as their faithful protector, you never hesitated to sacrifice for those entrusted to you. May your example inspire us also to welcome, cherish, and safeguard God’s most precious gift of life. Help us to faithfully commit ourselves to the service and defense of human life —especially where it is vulnerable or threatened. Obtain for us the grace to do the will of God in all things. Amen.
