ALL-STARS: The TinCaps were represented in the Midwest League All-Star Game in Lansing on June 19 by 4 players — catcher Luis Campusano, left-handed starter Aaron Leasher, left -handed reliever Travis Radke, and left-handed starter Nick Margevicius.

260 TO THE SHOW: Through the “ first half” of the 2018 MLB season, 42 former Fort Wane TinCaps/Wizards have played in the big leagues, includin g All-Stars: (2008) and (2010).

POWER SURGE: Kelvin Melean became the first TinCap with a multi-homer game since Hudson Potts hit 2 home runs at Parkview Field last Aug. 30 against Great Lakes. Prior to Wednesday, Melean had gone 170 career MiLB games, and 715 plate appearances, without a home run.

COOPERSTOWN CONNECTIONS: The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony took place on Sunday. Vladimir Guerrero, , Chipper Jones, and Jim Thome were inducted. In 1996, TinCaps Coach Jhonny Carvajal played with Vladimir Guerrero with the Double-A Harrisburg Senators (Expos). That season, Guerrero slashed .360/.438/.612 in 118 games at Double-A. The Senators won the Eastern League that season. Trevor Hoffman spent 16 years with the TinCaps parent club, the . With the Padres, Hoffman held a 2.76 career ERA and collected 552 of his 601 career saves.

SEASON BESTS: On Wednesday, the TinCaps set the following season bests in game 1 at Dayton… most runs in an inning (9 in 6th)… most hits in an inning (9 in 6th)… most home runs (3)… most home runs by an individual — Kelvin Melean (2)… most RBIs by an individual (5)… tied fewest hits allowed by a starter — Luis Patiño (0)… tied fewest hits allowed as a team (2).

PROMOTED: Nick Margevicius was promoted by the Padres to High-A Lake Elsinore on July 5. At the time of his call-up, Margevicius was Fort Wayne’s leader in ERA (3.07) and strikeouts (87).

YOUNGEST IN MiLB: The TinCaps have 6 of the 8 youngest players in the Midwest League: INF Justin Lopez (18), OF Tirso Ornelas (18), INF Gabriel Arias (18), INF Luis Almanzar (18), RHP Luis Patiño (18), and OF Jeisson Rosario (18). Fort Wayne has 10 active teenagers on its roster (with 2 on the DL). The average age for a Fort Wayne batter this year, according to baseball-reference.com, has been 19.3. That is the youngest in the league by far. The average age for a Midwest League batter has been 21.3. (Clinton is oldest at 22.3.)

ORNELAS ON BASE: Tirso Ornelas had a 27-game on-base streak earlier this season from May 24-June 27. The on-base streak was the 2nd longest active streak in the MWL at the time, and it stands as the longest such streak for a TinCap this season. (The longest in the league this year: 31 games, Michael Beltre, Dayton.) During the run, Ornelas hit .297 with a .425 OBP. He had 6 doubles, 3 triples, 4 homers, and 16 RBIs during the run. Maybe most impressive, he walked more times (19) than he struck out (16).

PADRES ON DECK: The TinCaps and Padres agreed on a 2-year extension of their Player Development Contract (PDC) through the 2020 season. This will stretch the affiliation between the organizations to 22 years continuing what is already the longest-lasting affiliation in San Diego’s franchise history. Padres Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller and TinCaps President Mike Nutter held a press conference at Parkview Field on Friday to announce the extension. This season is the 20th year of affiliation between Fort Wayne and San Diego, going back to 1999. The Wizards entered the Midwest League as an affiliate of the Twins in 1993 and remained with Minnesota through 1998.

260 TO THE SHOW: There have been 167 former Fort Wayne Wizards/TinCaps players to appear in the big leagues. That list includes 9 who’ve debut ed so far in 2018: LHP Joey Luchsesi (2016, Padres); LHP (2016, Padres); RHP (2012-13, Cubs); OF (2014-15, Padres); OF (2014, Braves); RHP (2014-16, Padres); LHP José Castillo (2015-16, Padres); INF (2014, Rays); RHP Enyel De Los Santos (2016, Phillies).

BEST BALLPARK: The TinCaps and Parkview Field won Ballpark Digest’s Best of the Ballparks Contest on June 19. Parkview Field defeated Four Winds Field in South Bend in the final round with 62% of the vote. The TinCaps won the subjective contest in 2016. South Bend stole the title last year. More objectively, Stadium Journey has named Parkview Field the best ballpark in all of Minor League Baseball 4 years in a row and 6 of the last 7 years.

5-FOR-5 CLUB: Robbie Podorsky went 5-for-5 with a , 2 RBIs, a , and a spectacular diving catch in left field on June 15. Podorsky became the first TinCap to have a 5-hit game since Franmil Reyes did on Labor Day 2015. (Reyes is now with the Padres in the majors.) Of note, Podorsky is listed at 5-foot-7, 170 pounds, while Reyes stands at 6-foot-5, 275 pounds.

SLUGGER: On their way down to Kentucky on June 12, the TinCaps made a pit stop to visit the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. The t eam toured the facility and some players even purchased bats. Louisville Slugger started making bats in 1884. Honus Wager was the first player to sign a contract with them in 1905, when they were known as the Hillerich & Bradsby Company. More than 8,000 players have signed with Louisville Slugger in the decades since, including the likes of Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente, and Tony Gwynn.

BIGGEST COMEBACK SINCE: The TinCaps overcame a 6-0 deficit to win 7-6 on June 1 @ Great Lakes. The ’Caps hadn’t overcome a deficit of more than 5 runs to win a game since Aug. 7, 2014, when Fort Wayne erased an 11-2 deficit against the in an eventual 12-11 win in 10 innings. Fernando Perez hit a game-tying in the 8th. The TinCaps had major leaguers (Nationals), Franmil Reyes (Padres), and Dustin Peterson (Braves) in the lineup that night, plus Jake Bauers (Rays) and Josh VanMeter (Reds, Triple-A Louisville). Lake County had Clint Frazier (Yankees).

GO IRISH: On June 4, the TinCaps spent the off-day in South Bend touring the University of Notre Dame. Players and staff had the chance to see the recently renovated Notre Dame Stadium, as well as iconic spots on campus like Touchdown Jesus (Hesburgh Library), the Golden Dome (Main Building), the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. The team also had a luncheon on campus, meeting ND Head Baseball Coach Mik Aoki, and learning about the university’s history in a bi-lingual presentation that focused on the role of immigrants in shaping the school.

DONATION: Along with their parent club, the Padres, the TinCaps have donated $1,000 to provide bats and helmets to the Little League Ch allenger Division of Fort Wayne. The Challenger Baseball League is an adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges (ages 4-22). Johnny TinCap and members from the front office staff a delivered the bats and helmets to the Challenger League on Sunday afternoon.

SPORTSCENTER: After a half-dozen appearances on ESPN in 2017, the TinCaps already have appeared on SportsCenter twice so far this season. Jeisson Rosario made a head-first diving catch from center field at home against Beloit on May 3 that made “Top 10” at No. 9 the following morning… On April 21, Esteury Ruiz and Tirso Ornelas were featured on SportsCenter during Kevin Connor’s “K.C.’s Minor League Minute” segment after they both had 3-hit games that included a home run at Parkview Field against Dayton.

DOWNTOWN FOR A DECADE: The 2018 season marks the 10th year of TinCaps baseball at Parkview Field. From 1993-2008 the team was known as the Fort Wayne Wizards and played at Memorial Stadium, about 3.5 miles north of Parkview Field.

NEW LOOK: This season the TinCaps unveiled new, additional brand marks. The new marks, which are an extension of the team’s brand, have been incorporated into new batting practice tops, BP hats, and road jerseys. The BP tops are charcoal with grey sleeves, with “TinCaps” across the chest in cursive and candy apple red in color. The “T” appears like an apple with a stem and leaf. The BP hats are grey with “Ft.W” in script, with the “W” looking like an apple. Meanwhile, the road jerseys are grey with red sleeves. “Ft. Wayne” is written in that cursive candy apple red font with the “F” resembling an apple. Earlier this season the team debuted new home white jerseys (similar to the previous ones but sans pinstripes and with a more readable number font), plus a dark green alternate jersey that says “The Fort” on the front which is being worn for Thursday home games. The team also has added an alternate home hat that has a white front. Since rebranding from the Wizards to the TinCaps when moving into Parkview Field in 2009, this is the first time the team has updated its uniforms. New gear is available for fans in The Orchard Team Store at the ballpark and online at TinCaps.com.

FRANCHISE RECORD: Defensively, the TinCaps set a franchise record by turning 6 double plays on May 11 at Kane County. According to team records , the previous high for double plays turned in a game was 5 (July 17, 2006 vs. Burlington). Fort Wayne’s lineup that day included future major leaguers in left field, Kyle Blanks at first base, and David Freese, who was involved in 1 of the DPs, at third.

MIDWEST LEAGUE RECORD: Shortstop Gabriel Arias was involved in turning all 6 double plays for the TinCaps on May 11 at Kane County. According to the Midwest League record book, Arias tied the record for most double plays turned in a game by an individual. Previously, 4 different first baseman were involved in 6 double plays in a game, with the most recent instance occurring in 1996. The only other shortstop to be involved in 6 double plays in a game was Donnie Sadler, who’d spend parts of 8 years in the bigs, for the (Red Sox) on April 7, 1995, in an 18-inning game. Though Friday night’s game went 12 innings, the 6 double plays were all turned in the first 9 innings.

THE “CINCINNATTI”: The TinCaps turned a bizarre 5-1-3 putout in the bottom of the ninth inning in a dramatic 6-5 win at Dayton on April 27. With the tying run at second and winning run at first, Dayton’s Jeter Downs smashed a hard grounder to TinCaps third baseman Reinaldo Ilarazza. It caromed off his glove toward the mound where left-handed pitcher Travis Radke caught it and in a swift motion fired to Carlos Belen at first, just in time for the out (even though Downs has proven to be one of the fastest players in the league this year). Ironically, 513 is the area code for Cincinnati, which is about an hour away from Dayton, and the Dragons are a Reds affiliate.

Only those team’s picks came and went without a phone call to Cosgrove. Was finally taken on day 3, his 21st birthday (June 14)  COLLEGE: Ranks 6th in Manhattan College school history with 225 strikeouts… Led the MAAC (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) and ranked 50th nationally with 105 strikeouts (11.21/game – 31st NCAA) while also matching the school’s single-season record… Was one of the most dominating pitchers in the MAAC in 2017… 2X MAAC Pitcher OTW… Ranked T-9th nationally with 5 complete games (2nd MAAC)… The first Jasper to be drafted since Anthony Vega was selected by the in the 30th round (pick #912) of the 2012 MLB Draft. The Staten Island native is also the 15th Jasper to be selected by a MLB organization… He was the 3rd drafted player from the MAAC (including current teammate Nick Margevicius, who was taken in the 7th round by the Padres out of Rider University)  TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME: Manhattan College’s nickname is the Jaspers — named after Brother Jasper, who served at the Catholic school in the late 19th century… Among his contributions to the school, he was its first athletic director, founded the school’s baseball team, and became its first baseball coach… Legend has it that one warm and humid day when Manhattan was playing a semi-pro team known as the Metropolitans, the students watching the game were becoming restless and edgy as Manhattan came to bat in the seventh inning of a close game; Brother Jasper paused the game and told the students to get up and stretch for a few minutes before the game resumed… Since Manhattan annually played the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds, Manhattan College’s “Seventh Inning Stretch” spread to the big leagues  HIGH SCHOOL: Monsignor Farrell (Staten Island, NY)… Nickname: Lions… Named All-State as a senior and played in the NYC Mayor's Cup All-Star Game his last 2 years in HS.  THIS, THAT, AND THE OTHER: Grew up a Mets fan… Favorite show to watch on Netflix: Bob’s Burgers… Favorite movie to watch on a bus trip: Forrest Gump… Hobbies: Fishing, Water Sports… Career If Not in Baseball: Firefighter… Favorite Postgame Spread: Mexican Food… The all-boys Catholic school he attended had a strict dress code that included having a short hair cut. With more lax rules at Manhattan, grew his hair out past his shoulders. After being drafted, the Padres requested he cut it (which he didn’t object to in the sweltering Arizona summer heat)… Ambidextrous… Could ride a unicycle as a kid
