Outside the Dyad Outside the dyad. An Ethnographic Journey Beyond Attachment, with African-Caribbean Families in London. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract For over one hundred years, Western Psychology has been preoccupied with developing an understanding of the dyad par excellence: mother and child. This thesis explores the cultural validity of attachment theory and the concept of the dyad in families of African Caribbean heritage in London, UK. This is developed through the juxtaposition of an ethnography of emic perspectives and experiences of Caribbean families in London, and a series of semi-structured interviews and group discussions with practitioners from fields of relevance. The thematic analysis of the data collected puts forward conflicting interpretations, between practitioners and families, on three common themes: the meaning of being Caribbean, family bonds, and attitudes towards society. The discussion of these three themes, and divergent perspectives of participants, indicates that the key tenets of attachment theory (maternal sensitivity, quality of care and stability of attachment) are not representative of the experiences and perspectives presented by the families. Considering these results, I formulate a possible alternative theoretical framework to represent and theorise dynamics in Caribbean families: fluctuant attachment. Whilst this new framework, based on three themes identified by families as central to their experiences, wishes to limit stereotypical interpretations of family bonds; it fails to recognise children’s role in these relations. In my conclusion, following a 3 Foucaldian deconstruction of attachment theory, I argue for the necessity for Childhood Studies to be a field of critical theory, based on children’s rights, and to develop new theoretical frameworks that recognise children as active agents. 4 Acknowledgments This thesis has been a journey of reflection and development, not only in academic terms, but also personal and professional. I would also like to thank my mother and grandmother for all their support and my supervisor Pippa Dell for ‘hanging in there’ with me, even when I was a pain. 2 Abstract This research sought to explore how male clinical psychologists talked about their experiences of working with women who have experienced abuse and whether such gender difference in the context of therapeutic work problematized them or had implications for their practice and subjective experiences. Eight male clinical psychologists were recruited and interviewed using a conversational style and co-constructed interview schedules. All participants had experience of working with clients who had experienced abuse and were working in the National Health Service (NHS) in a variety of different settings, which included psychosis teams, child services and learning disability services. The data corpus was analysed using a social constructionist thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) also informed by the work of Michel Foucault (1972), set within critical realist ontology. From the analysis two main themes were generated (Gender difference in trauma work; Male clinical psychologists’ perspectives in the wider context) and six sub- themes (Male clinical psychologist as associated with the abuser; Gender difference as therapeutic; Female clinical psychologists as problematized by gender; Supervision and peer support; Service constraints; Maleness as a minority in clinical psychology).

What impedes the strengthening of ties in such groups? We explore the role of demographic differences in causing the impediment and demographic self-disclosure in removing it. Using a field study of online quit-smoking groups complemented by three laboratory experi- ments, we find that members tend to hide demographic differences, concerned about poor social integration that will weaken their ties. However, the self-disclosures of demographic differences that naturally occur dur- ing group member discussions actually strengthen their ties, which in turn facilitates attainment of members’ health goals. In other words, social ties in online groups are weak not because members are demographically different, but because they are reluctant to self-disclose their differences. If they do self-disclose, this breeds interpersonal connection, trumping any demographic differences among them.     Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL NETWORK ANALYSIS Social networks are as old as the human species. As small bands of hunter- gatherers spread around the globe, their survival depended on cooperative strategies for pursuing game and finding good foraging grounds. Ties of family and extended kin were crucial to raising the next generations. With increased size and density of agrarian settlements, succeeded by expanding urban civilizations, networks grew increasingly complex and indispensable for merchants involved in long-distance commerce and armies engaged in conquest. Palace and court intrigues ran on gossip, rumor, and favor-trading among political factions. Scientific and technological advances necessi- tated information flows through invisible colleges of experts. Social net- works have a truly ancient lineage yet are seldom noted nordistribute well understood by their participants. People today commonly envision social networkingor as clusters of coworkers going for lunch or coffee, teams of dormmates playing basketball or softball, and bunches of friends chewing the fat. Yes, those small groups are all social networks. To give a formal definition, a social network is a set of actors, or other entities, and a set or sets of relations defined on them. In the three preceding examples, the firstpost, actors are coworkers and the relations are lunchmate and coffeemate; the second actors are residents of the same dorm and playing sports is the relation; the third network is friends gossip- ing leisurely. Applying the definition to diverse social settings, we can easily uncover numerous social networks, some more formal than the three previously described. For example, a college academic unit has a social network composedcopy, of faculty members, staff, students, and administrators.
