Summer 2019 Director’s Letter Dear Members, Summer in the Northwest is a glorious time of year. It is also notoriously busy. If you are like most people, you are eager fill your weekends with fun and adventure. Whether you are re-visiting some of your favorite places or discovering new ones, I hope Maryhill is on your summer short list. We certainly have plenty to tempt you. On July 13 we open the special exhibition West Coast Woodcut: Contemporary Relief Prints by Regional Artists, which showcases some of the best printmakers of the region. The 60 prints on view feature masterfully rendered landscapes, flora and fauna of the West coast, along with explorations of social and environmental issues. Plein air artists will be back in action this summer when the 2019 Pacific Northwest Plein Air in the Columbia River Gorge kicks off in late July; throughout August we will exhibit their paintings in the museum’s M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust Education Center. The show is always a delight and I look forward to seeing the Gorge through the eyes of these talented artists. Speaking of the Gorge — we are in the thick of it with the Exquisite Gorge Project, a collaborative printmaking effort that has brought together 11 artists to create large-scale woodblock prints reflective of a 220-mile stretch of the Columbia River. On August 24 we invite you to participate in the culmination of the project as the print blocks are inked, laid end-to-end and printed using a steamroller on the grounds at Maryhill. -

Collection Development Policy Statement Rare Books Collection Subject Specialist responsible: Doug McElrath, 301‐405‐9210, [email protected] I. Purpose The Rare Books Collection in the University of Maryland Libraries preserves physical evidence of the most successful format for recording and disseminating human knowledge: the printed codex. From the invention of printing with movable type in Asia to its widespread adoption and explosive growth in 15th century Europe, the printed book in all its forms has had an inestimable impact on the way information has been organized, spread, and consumed. The invention of printing is one of the critical technological advances that made possible the modern world. At the University of Maryland, the Rare Books Collection serves multiple purposes: As a teaching collection that preserves physical examples of the way the book has evolved over the centuries, from a hand‐crafted artifact to a mass‐produced consumable. As a research collection for targeted concentrations of printed text supporting scholarly investigation (see collection scope below). As an historical repository for outstanding examples of human accomplishment as preserved in printed formats, including seminal works in the arts, humanities, social sciences, physical and biological sciences. As a research repository for noteworthy examples of the art and craft of the book: typography, bindings, paper making, illustration, etc. As a secure storehouse for works that because of their scarcity, fragility, age, ephemerality, provenance, controversial content, or high monetary value are not appropriate for the general circulating collection. The Rare Books Collection seeks to enable researchers to interact with the physical artifact as much as possible. -

Syllabus Spring 2017 ARH 4470/ARH 5482 Contemporary Art A Discipline-Specific Global Learning Course1 Tuesday and Thursday 2-3:15pm Green Library, Room 165 Instructor: Dr. Alpesh Kantilal Patel Assistant Professor, Contemporary Art and Theory Director, MFA in Visual Arts Affiliate Faculty, Center for Women’s and Gender Studies Affiliate Faculty, African and African diaspora Program Contact information for instructor: Department of Art + Art History MM Campus, VH 235 Preferred mode of contact: [email protected] Office hours: Thursday: 12:45-1:45pm Course description: This course examines major artists, artworks, and movements after World War II; as well as broader visual culture—everything from music videos and print advertisements to propaganda and photojournalism—especially as the difference between ‘art’ and non-art increasingly becomes blurred and the objectivity of aesthetics is called into question. Movements studied include Abstract Expressionism, Pop, and Minimalism in the 1950s and 1960s; Post-Minimalism/Process Art, and Land art in the late 1960s and 1970s; Pastiche/Appropriation and rise of interest in “identity” in the 1980s; and the emergence of Post-Identity, Relational Art, Internet/New Media art, and Post- Internet art in the 1990s/post-2000 period. This course will explore the expansion of the art world beyond “Euro- America.” In particular, we will consider the shift from an emphasis on the international to transnational. We will focus not only on artistic production in the US, but also that in Europe, South and East Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. -
