SCENE 2 PROLOGUE NARRATOR

Once upon a time there was a very mean and selfish prince. One dark and stormy night an old woman came to the castle door and asked the prince to let her in from the bitter cold but the prince said…

PRINCE

No way.

NARRATOR

In return, she offered him a rose. But the unkind prince turned her away. The old woman warned him not to be deceived by appearances.

ENCHANTRESS

Beauty is found within.

NARRATOR

When the prince turned her away once again, the old woman’s appearance quickly changed into that of a beautiful enchantress. The prince tried to apologize.

PRINCE

Wait! I’m so sorry.

ENCHANTRESS

There is no love in your heart.

NARRATOR

As punishment, the enchantress turned the prince into a hideous beast. Then she placed a spell on the castle and all who lived there. If he could learn to love and be loved in return before the last petal of the rose falls off, the spell would be broken. If not, he would remain a 6

beast forever. As the years past, the beast fell into despair.

BEAST

Nobody could ever love me. I will never leave this castle again.

NARRATOR

And so it was for many years. But all of that would soon change when some unexpected guests show up at the castle. 7

SCENE 3 THE VILLAGE

NARRATOR

In a nearby village there lived a beautiful young woman named Belle. Belle, unlike other girls, cared only for her books. She always felt out of place.

BELLE

I wish we lived someplace else. Like the town in this book.

RENEE

But why?

BELLE

Because nothing ever happens here.

NARRATOR

Belle’s mother, Renee, loved books, too. Renee was an inventor and a genius but the rest of the townsfolk thought she was just another loony like Belle.

GASTON

Belle is even stranger than her mother.

SONG Good Morning Belle

There goes the baker with his tray like always The same old bread and rolls to sell Every morning just the same Since the morning that we came To this boring little town, good morning Belle.

Look there she goes, that girl is so peculiar I wonder if she’s feeling well 8

With a dreamy far off look And her nose stuck in a book What a puzzle to the rest of us is Belle

Look, there she goes that girl is so peculiar I wonder if she’s feeling well Never part of any crowd Cause her head’s up in some cloud What a puzzle to the rest of us is Belle

NARRATOR

Gaston, the most handsome man in town, wanted to make Belle his wife. Even if she was strange, she was the most beautiful girl in town.

GASTON

Her nose is always in a book but that will change when she meets me.

NARRATOR

But Belle turned him down again and again. Still, Gaston was determined to change her mind.

SONG Gaston

Right from the moment when he met her, saw her He said, “She’s gorgeous”, and he fell Here in town there’s only she Who’s as beautiful as he So he’s making plans to marry, marry Belle

GASTON

Hello Belle (he takes the book from her and looks inside)

BELLE

Can I have my book back please? 9

GASTON

How can you read it. It has no pictures!

RENEE

Some people use their imaginations.

GASTON

Let’s talk about something that will make you smile. Let’s talk about me!

RENEE

What makes you so great, Gaston?

SONG Gaston

No one’s slick like Gaston No one’s quick like Gaston No one’s neck is incredibly thick like Gaston’s For there’s no one in town quite as brawny As you see, he’s got biceps to spare

No one shoots like Gaston Makes those beauts like Gaston, Then goes stomping around in his boots like Gaston As a strong man, oh yes, he can scare you What a guy, Gaston! 10

SCENE 4 AT THE CASTLE

NARRATOR

One cold day, Renee and Belle set off into the night to show his latest invention at a faraway fair. But they became lost and came to a castle door to ask for help.

CHIP

Momma! There are girls in the castle!

RENEE

Hello? We need a place to stay for the night.

ANGELIQUE

Please come inside.

LUMIERE

Of course you are welcome here.

MRS. POTTS

How about some tea?

FOOTSTOOL

Put your feet up and relax!

COGSWORTH

Our master will not like this.

ANGELIQUE

Our master doesn’t like anything. 11

CHIP

Can they really stay, Mom?

MRS. POTTS

Of course they can!

BEAST

Who are you and what are you doing here?

COGSWORTH

I tried to keep them out.

ANGELIQUE

You did no such thing, Cogsworth!

FOOTSTOOL

Master, they were freezing and lost.

BELLE

My name is Belle and this is my mother Renee.

RENEE

Thank you for letting us in from the cold.

BEAST

You will join me for dinner.

BELLE 12

Thank you but we are both very tired.

BEAST

That wasn’t a question, it was an order!

RENEE

(Nudging BELLE) What a generous offer.

FEATHERDUSTER

What he means is, we want you to be our guests.

SONG Be Our Guest #2

Be our guest, be our guest Put our service to the test Tie your napkin round your neck, my dears And we’ll do all the rest

Soup du jour, Hot hors d'oeuvres Why we only live to serve Try the grey stuff, it’s delicious Don’t believe me? Ask the dishes

They can sing, they can dance After all miss, this is France And our dinner here is never second best

Go on unfold your menu, take a glance and then You’ll be our guest, be our guest, be our guest

NARRATOR

The servants in the castle wanted to help Belle and Renee. They made her feel comfortable even while the Beast made them feel scared. They decided to coach him on how best to not scare Belle and Renee away. 13

LUMIERE

(To the BEAST) You must impress them with your wit.

FEATHERDUSTER

But be gentle.

COGSWORTH

Shower them with compliments!

MRS. POTTS

But be sincere.

ANGELIQUE

Show them what’s inside your heart.

FOOTSTOOL

And above all…

ALL

You must control your temper!

NARRATOR

The Beast listened to his friends and slowly, his demeanor started to change. 14

SCENE 5 SOMETHING THERE

NARRATOR

Soon after dinner, the Beast reveals a brand new bookcase full of adventure books that he put out just for Belle and Renee.

RENEE

I can’t believe it!

BELLE

I’ve never seen so many books in my life!

BEAST

It’s all yours.

NARRATOR

As the three of them began to explore the books, the servants were standing by, waiting to see how the Beast’s good deed would unfold.

MRS. POTTS

Would you look at that!

LUMIERE

I knew it would work.

COGSWORTH

This is very encouraging.

FEATHERDUSTER 15

Isn’t this exciting!

FOOTSTOOL

Do you think it’s almost time?

ANGELIQUE

I have a very good feeling about this!

CHIP

What are you all talking about?

LUMIERE

Allow us to explain.

SONG Something There

He’s almost sweet, He’s almost kind, But he was mean and he was angry all the time He’s like a friend And doesn’t roar He didn’t used to be so nice like this before.

She looked at him, And thought she saw She wasn’t frightened when she took him by the paw. She is the friend He’s waited for He wonders why he didn’t see it there before.

CHIP

What’s there Mama?

MRS. POTTS 16

I’ll tell you when you’re older. 17

SCENE 6 THE TRANSFORMATION

NARRATOR

It wasn’t long after that the Beast realized something important. To be a good friend the Beast had to give Belle and Renee their freedom.

BEAST

I want you to go free.

BELLE

But we want to stay here with you, don’t we Mom?

RENEE

That’s right. Why would we ever leave such an enchanted castle?

BEAST

You want to stay even though I’m a beast?

BELLE

Beauty is on the inside, not the outside.

NARRATOR

Suddenly, something magical happened. The curse was broken and the beast turned back into a handsome prince. All the servants as well turned back into their human selves again.

FEATHERDUSTER

Look at us!

COGSWORTH 18

It’s a miracle!

LUMIERE

I told you she would break the spell.

FOOTSTOOL

Belle, Renee, we owe you so much!

ANGELIQUE

How can we ever repay you?

CHIP

Mama, are we going to live happily ever after?

MRS. POTTS

Of course, my dear!

CHIP

Do I still have to sleep in the cupboard?

(Everybody laughs)

NARRATOR

And so, the castle came to life with rejoicing. There was no more doubt that everyone would live happily ever after.

SONG Tale as Old as Time

Tale as old as time Tune as old as song Bittersweet and strange Finding you can change 19

Learning you were wrong

Certain as the sun Rising in the east Tale as old as time Song as old as rhyme,
