NCAA Champ Nelson Named 2012 Division III Cross Country Men's Scholar Athlete of the Year

NEW ORLEANS – Tim Nelson of UW-Stout was named the USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2012 cross country season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). This fall, Nelson was the individual winner of the DIII NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Scholar Athletes are determined from among those who earned All-Academic status and placed highest individually at the most recent NCAA Championships.

USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Cross Country Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year – Tim Nelson, UW-Stout

Nelson, a senior business administration major from Augusta, Wis., has earned a 3.701 cumulative grade point average through the 2012 fall semester.

En route to winning the individual title at the DIII NCAA Championships Nelson led nearly the entire race apart from a few minutes at the very beginning. He crossed the line in the 8k race in 24:26.80, eight seconds ahead of runner-up Bobby Over of Allegheny.

In the lead-up to the NCAA Championships he also captured the individual crown at the NCAA Midwest Regional and the WIAC title by about 25 seconds over the next-closest finisher. He also added an individual DIII title at the Roy Griak Invitational, and finished in the top 40 of the adidas Invitational among top-flight DI talent.

162 Earn All-Academic Status

In addition to the Scholar Athlete of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced those men who earned 2012 Division III All- Academic Cross Country status.

A total of 162 student-athletes represent the 85 institutions that compose the group. Calvin led all teams in both genders and all divisions with seven named to the All-Academic list. Pomona-Pitzer and UW-La Crosse followed among DIII men’s squads with five. The UAA picked up the most nods among conferences with 16. The SCIAC was second-most among conferences with 15.

Twelve of the top 25 finishers from the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall earned All-Academic honors. Seven on the All-Academic list reported cumulative GPAs of 4.0 through the fall semester.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most-recent semester and placed in the top 35 at the NCAA Regional Championships.

National Champ Cazzola Named 2012 Division III Cross Country Women's Scholar Athlete of the Year

NEW ORLEANS – Christy Cazzola of UW-Oshkosh was named the USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2012 cross country season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). This fall, Cazzola was the winner of the Division III Cross Country Championships.

Scholar Athletes are determined from among those who earned All-Academic status and placed highest individually at the most recent NCAA Championships.

USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Cross Country Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Year – Christy Cazzola, UW-Oshkosh

Cazzola, a senior special education major from Kaukauna, Wis., has earned a 3.344 cumulative grade point average through the 2012 fall semester.

She became the third UW-Oshkosh student-athlete to win a national cross country title in 2012, storming back from an 11-second deficit with 1000 meters remaining in the 6k race to claim victory in 20:53 - finishing 15 seconds ahead of runner-up Alison Steinbrunner of Northern and 20 seconds ahead of third-place Keri Lambert of Amherst.

Cazzola capped her UW-Oshkosh cross country career with the title, the culmination of a three-year run that saw her finish fourth in 2010 and runner-up last season. She also claimed the NCAA Midwest Regional and WIAC Championship individual titles.

A total of 201 student-athletes represent the 104 institutions that compose the group. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Haverford led the way six on the All-Academic list. They were followed by six schools with five apiece.

NEW ORLEANS – The Knights of Calvin College are the USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Men’s Scholar Team of the Year for the 2012 cross country season as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Calvin took runner-up honors at the NCAA Cross Country Championship title this fall.

Scholar Teams of the year are determined from among those who earned All-Academic status and placed highest as a team at the most recent NCAA Championships.

USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Cross Country Men’s Scholar Team of the Year – Calvin College

Calvin College, coached by Brian Diemer, has earned a 3.47 cumulative grade point average through the fall semester of 2012. The Knights finished in a tie for second as a team at the NCAA Championships with Haverford, but were able to claim Scholar Team of the Year honors by a slim .027 margin between the two schools' cumulative team grade point averages.

The Knights came close to claiming the NCAA team title, finishing runner-up in a tie with Haverford with 188 points behind champion North Central (Ill.)'s 167 points. A pair of senior runners earned USTFCCCA All-America honors for Calvin in Nick Kramer (26th) and Dan Kerr (46th).

Cal Tech reported the highest cumulative team GPA in the country through the fall 2012 semester at 3.72. Washington (Mo.) followed at 3.61.

Eight of the top ten finishing teams at the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championships earned All-Academic status. Of the 32 teams that participated in the national meet, 22 of those earned All-Academic status.

Division III Champ Johns Hopkins Named DIII Cross Country Women's Scholar Team of the Year In addition, 197 teams receive All-Academic status

NEW ORLEANS – The Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins University are the USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Women’s Scholar Team of the Year for the 2012 cross country season as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Johns Hopkins University won the NCAA Cross Country Championship title this fall.

Scholar Teams of the year are determined from among those who earned All-Academic status and placed highest as a team at the most recent NCAA Championships.

USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Cross Country Women’s Scholar Team of the Year – Johns Hopkins University

Johns Hopkins, coached by DIII National Women's Coach of the Year Bobby Van Allen, have earned a cumulative team grade point average of 3.32 through the fall semester of 2012.

The Blue Jays soared to their first NCAA Championship in women's cross country with a team score of 153, 63 poitns better than runner-up Wartburg. Not only was the championship the first in program history, but it was also the first by a women's team in school history, and its first DIII title regardless of gender since men's last won in 1979.

With three USTFCCCA All-America honorees, the Blue Jays stood alone with the most selections. Freshman Hannah Oneda (10th), junior Holly Clarke (25th) and senior Annie Monagle (32nd) each earned the honor for the national champions.

197 Teams Earn All-Academic Status

In addition to the Scholar Team of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced those Women’s teams who earned 2012 Division III All-Academic Cross Country status.

A total of 197 institutions represent 39 conferences that compose the group. The MIAC had the most squads on the list with 11, followed by the NESCAC, Centennial Conference, and Middle Atlantic Conference which followed with 10.

Eastern Mennonite reported the highest cumulative team GPA in the country through the fall 2012 semester at 3.76. Pomona-Pitzer followed at 3.71.

All ten of the top ten finishing teams at the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championships earned All-Academic status. Of the 32 teams that participated in the national meet, 28 of those earned All-Academic status.

To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.10 or better.
