Vietnam War Protest Song Analysis Suggested Grades 6-12 Overview Creativity was an important asset to protesting the Vietnam War. Many popular musicians of the 1960s and 1970s wrote and performed songs in order to express opposition to the violence in Vietnam. These songs are still played today, which serves as a reminder of the power of music. Objective Learn about the antiwar movement, discuss the reasons for opposing the war in Vietnam and reflect. Time needed About thirty minutes: fifteen to discuss the antiwar movement, five minutes to listen to the song, and ten minutes for reflection and discussion. Materials needed: A computer with speakers Handouts of song lyrics A piece of paper Instructions 1. Give a summary of the antiwar movement to the students and be sure to include examples of why the individuals chose to protest. 2. Hand out a copy of the lyrics of the chosen Vietnam protest song. 3. Aloud, play the song for the students and give some time after the song is finished for the students to write a reflection of the song. 4. Together, have the class discuss the reason why the musician might have written the song as well as different examples and issues brought up in the antiwar movement that they heard in the song. She holds three music degrees, including a Master of Music in Composition from the San Francisco Conservatory, and has studied conducting at San Jose State University. Her compositions and songs have won awards from the American Choral Directors Association, the San Francisco ArtSong Competition, and the Austin Music Umbrella Songwriters Competition, and she receives commissions from choral groups around the country. A certified member of Music Teachers National Association, she teaches piano, serves as Music Director for Campbell United Congregational Church and resides in San Jose with her wife, Brenda Meng, and an assortment of adorable cats. Betsy Wagner, Co-Artistic Director, Choralographer Betsy Wagner has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education with a dual major in voice and piano from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA. She has been teaching music to students in grades K-12 since 1978. Since coming to the Bay Area in 1990, she has built an award-winning choir program at Morrill Middle School in San Jose. It has been a banner year for the Voices. In May, we won our first ever Mid-Atlantic District Division Championship, and in July, performed as the official mic testing chorus at the International Convention of the Barbershop Harmony Society in Philadelphia. In the past month, we have had the honor of performing the Star Spangled Banner at Madison Square Garden, and enjoyed our first performance as featured guests on the Hickory Tree Chorus’ show “Happy Together.” This month, the Voices were selected by Brookfield Properties to sing holiday carols in buildings across Manhattan, including the World Financial Center and the Rockefeller Center Cafe (at which VoG provided entertainment for ING Direct Bank’s holiday party). We have had a wonderful year full of growth and music, and are glad that you, our family, friends and fans are here to celebrate the season with a cappella, barbershop, jazz, pop and traditional holiday tunes. An Interview with Fred Hellerman Part II May 26, 2016 In this interview Fred is joined by his wife, Susan Lardner. Ken Edgar: We are now back in Fred Hellerman's living room and we're continuing our conversation with Fred. We are joined today by Susan Lardner, Fred’s wife, who herself has a very interesting background and career. Together they are going to help us remember their lives in Weston, starting in around 1970. Susan, welcome to the show. When we last left our story we had talked about your arrival in Weston and how Harold Leventhal, the Weaver's manager, had purchased a home near Cobb's Mill and was influential in bringing you up here. As a result, you became interested in Weston and eventually bought the house in which we are sitting today. Susan: I checked with one of Harold's daughters and found out that he had bought his house in 1968 and Fred bought this house in 1969. Although Fred had been up here before visiting other people, he had not been in the house purchasing business. Fred Hellerman: Yeah, coming up there for a weekend. I just fell in love with that immediately. It was a very important place for me. Ken: In the summer of 1970, you two were married right here on this property. Fred: From here, yeah, at this house. Pete Seeger, Songwriter and Champion of Folk Music, Dies at 94 By Jon Pareles, The New York Times, 1/28 Pete Seeger, the singer, folk-song collector and songwriter who spearheaded an American folk revival and spent a long career championing folk music as both a vital heritage and a catalyst for social change, died Monday. He was 94 and lived in Beacon, N.Y. His death was confirmed by his grandson, Kitama Cahill Jackson, who said he died of natural causes at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Mr. Seeger’s career carried him from singing at labor rallies to the Top 10 to college auditoriums to folk festivals, and from a conviction for contempt of Congress (after defying the House Un-American Activities Committee in the 1950s) to performing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at an inaugural concert for Barack Obama. 1 / 13 Pete Seeger, Songwriter and Champion of Folk Music, Dies at 94 For Mr. Seeger, folk music and a sense of community were inseparable, and where he saw a community, he saw the possibility of political action. In his hearty tenor, Mr. Seeger, a beanpole of a man who most often played 12-string guitar or five-string banjo, sang topical songs and children’s songs, humorous tunes and earnest anthems, always encouraging listeners to join in. His agenda paralleled the concerns of the American left: He sang for the labor movement in the 1940s and 1950s, for civil rights marches and anti-Vietnam War rallies in the 1960s, and for environmental and antiwar causes in the 1970s and beyond. -

A New Annual Festival Celebrating the History and Heritage of Greenwich Village OPENING RECEPTION IN THE VILLAGE TRIP LOUNGE An exhibition of work by celebrated music photographer David Gahr and rare Greenwich Village memorabilia from the collection of archivist Mitch Blank Music by David Amram, The Village Trip Artist-in-Residence Washington Square Hotel, Thursday September 27, at 6.30pm David Gahr (1922-2008) was destined for a career as an economics journalist but he got lost in music, opting to remain in New York City, at Sam Goody’s celebrated record store, because a staff job on New Republic would have meant moving to Washington DC, a prospect he found “a bit boring.” From his perch behind the counter, Gahr made sure to photograph the customers he recognised as musicians, quickly building up a portfolio. He turned professional in 1958 when Moses Asch, founder of Folkways Records – “that splendid, cantankerous guru of our time” - commissioned him to photograph such figures as Woody Guthrie, Cisco Houston and Pete Seeger. He went on to capture now-iconic images of the great American bluesmen - Big Bill Broonzy, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, and Howlin’ Wolf, musicians who were key influences on so many 1960s rock musicians. Gahr was soon the foremost photographer of the Greenwich Village jazz and folk scenes, chronicling the early years of musicians whose work would come to define the 1960s, among them Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Odetta, Joan Baez, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Patti Smith. He photographed Bob Dylan’s celebrated 1963 Newport Folk Festival debut and captured the legendary moment in 1965 when he went electric.
