Manny Yospa (cameraman, focus puller) by admin — last modified Jul 27, 2008 02:54 PM BIOGRAPHY: Manny Yospa entered the film industry as a teenager through his connection with the Young Communists League and the Worker’s Film Association run by ‘Alderman’ Joe Reeves from Wardour Street in around 1938. He joined the ACT as a cameraman, having filmed footage of various Co-Operative film society fetes and similar events. During the war he worked at Welwyn Studios on MOI shorts and trailers, including the ‘Food Flashes’. The first feature film he worked on was Thursday’s Child (1943). Yospa also worked at Welwyn on Halfway House (1944) and Man from Morocco (1945). He moved to the Gainsborough studios at Islington under Betty Box, working on films such as the Huggetts series, Miranda (1948) and When the Bough Breaks (1947). After Gainsborough closed, Yospa worked for various companies, including the Film Producers’ Guild at Merton Park, Rank and various others. Productions he was involved in include a travelogue of Egypt, Stryker of the Yard (1953), The Bulldog Breed (1960), In the Doghouse (1961), as well as television series such as The Return of Martin Kane (1957), Danger Man (1960), William Tell (1958), The Invisible Man (1958). During the late 1960s Yospa got a contract to film stories in Britain for an East German (GDR) newsreel company, and later he became involved in selling film-stock and equipment for the East German ORWO company. SUMMARY: In this interview, Yospa talks in detail to Charles Drazin about his career in film. He discusses the personalities and productions he worked with, giving a good account of the political film movements of the 1930s and the working atmosphere at Islington in the mid 1940s.

  • A Review of Famous Songs of the Past
Daily Sparkle CD - A Review of Famous Songs of the Past “Fascinating Facts” May 2018 Track 1 My Very Good Friend The Milkman Johnny Burke was a lyricist, widely regarded as one of the finest writers of popular songs in America between the 1920s and 1950s. In 1934, he and Harold Spina wrote "My Very Good Friend, the Milkman" which was a novelty hit for Fats Waller. Fats Waller (May 21, 1904 – December 15, 1943), born Thomas Wright Waller, was a jazz pianist, organist, composer, singer, and comedic entertainer. Waller was one of the most popular performers of his era, finding critical and commercial success in his homeland and in Europe. He was also a prolific songwriter and many songs he wrote or co-wrote are still popular, such as "Honeysuckle Rose", "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Squeeze Me”. He was once ‘kidnapped’ by friends of Al Capone where he was taken at gunpoint to Al Capone’s birthday party where he was the surprise guest. Once he’d realised the gangsters weren’t going to kill him he played for 3 days earning thousands of dollars in tips! He enjoyed success touring the United Kingdom and Ireland in the 1930s. He appeared in several feature films and short subject films, most notably Stormy Weather in 1943, which was released July 21, just months before his death. Track 2 Hound Dog Hound Dog is a twelve-bar blues song by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was recorded by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton in 1952. The song has been recorded more than 250 times with the best-known version being the July 1956 recording by Elvis Presley.

  • Complete Film Noir
COMPLETE FILM NOIR (1940 thru 1965) Page 1 of 18 CONSENSUS FILM NOIR (1940 thru 1959) (1960-1965) dThe idea for a COMPLETE FILM NOIR LIST came to me when I realized that I was “wearing out” a then recently purchased copy of the Film Noir Encyclopedia, 3rd edition. My initial plan was to make just a list of the titles listed in this reference so I could better plan my film noir viewing on AMC (American Movie Classics). Realizing that this plan was going to take some keyboard time, I thought of doing a search on the Internet Movie DataBase (here after referred to as the IMDB). By using the extended search with selected criteria, I could produce a list for importing to a text editor. Since that initial list was compiled almost twenty years ago, I have added additional reference sources, marked titles released on NTSC laserdisc and NTSC Region 1 DVD formats. When a close friend complained about the length of the list as it passed 600 titles, the idea of producing a subset list of CONSENSUS FILM NOIR was born. Several years ago, a DVD producer wrote me as follows: “I'd caution you not to put too much faith in the film noir guides, since it's not as if there's some Film Noir Licensing Board that reviews films and hands out Certificates of Authenticity. The authors of those books are just people, limited by their own knowledge of and access to films for review, so guidebooks on noir are naturally weighted towards the more readily available studio pictures, like Double Indemnity or Kiss Me Deadly or The Big Sleep, since the many low-budget B noirs from indie producers or overseas have mostly fallen into obscurity.” There is truth in what the producer says, but if writers of (film noir) guides haven’t seen the films, what chance does an ordinary enthusiast have.

We also have a special event planned on Saturday 9th at the beautiful Savoy Cinema, just around the corner at Heaton Moor.
