Police, St John Ambulance and FENZ sent help to the scene at 9.30pm last night by Brown Road. “The ute snapped the power pole off but fortunately the power lines stayed suspended in the air,” a senior firefighter said. “The three teenagers, all males aged 16 and 17, were out of the vehicle by the time we got there.” They were treated at the scene by ambulance officers, then transported to Gisborne Hospital with what were described as “moderate” injuries. “A 16-year-old was treated in the Emergency Department and sent home last night,” the hospital reported this morning. “The other two, aged 16 and 17, were admitted and are in stable condition.” The senior firefighter said the youths were lucky not to have sustained more serious injuries. Police have an investigation under way into how the crash happened. The highway was closed at the crash site for some time afterwards. Steps were taken to recover the badly damaged ute this morning. Eastland Network faults staff also responded. “The lines remained live, and the power supply to that area remained on until around 11.15pm, when staff secured the broken pole,” a network spokesman said.
