Kirkland Crossings
Kirkland Crossings May 2021 The Origin of Mother's Day he present-day celebration of Mother's Day began in the year 1908 when Anna Jarvis organized a memorial for her mother, also named Ann Jarvis who was a T peace activist and cared for the wounded soldiers of the American Civil War. The event was held at the St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which currently holds the International Mother's Day Shrine. Daughter Anna began the task of getting support for the celebration of Mother's Day in the United States in 1905 after her mother died that same year. She wanted to honor all the mothers of the world who had done a lot for their family and society. Due to her continuous efforts, most of the US states by 1911 started celebrating Mother's Day as a local holiday and the West Virginia, the home state of Jarvis. became the first state to declare it a holiday in 1910. Finally, the second Sunday of May was officially designated as Mother's Day in the USA and was declared a national holiday after Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of United States of America, signed the proclamation in the year 1914. In this way, the present Mother's Day came into existence in the USA and the same date is also selected by countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Italy, Singapore, Belgium, and a lot more other countries. Why do we celebrate Mother's Day? Mother's Day is celebrated in various parts of the world to express respect, honor and love towards mothers. -
2021-2022 Calendar of Religious Holidays, Festivals, And
2021-2022 Calendar of Religious Holidays, Festivals, and Observances for the RISD Community The Religious Practices Advisory Committee developed this calendar as an informational guide for RISD teachers and administrators. It is based on information obtained from committee members and religious leaders in our community about holy days, religious holidays, or other observances they consider to be widely recognized, and on which students of the respective faiths might be absent from school. Teachers and administrators should refer to the calendar when planning major tests and other curricular, extracurricular and special activities, and be sensitive to anticipated student absences or other needs for observances on these dates. Of course, not all dates on which individual students may be absent for religious observances are included on this calendar. Teachers and administrators will consider student absences for religious observances on an individual basis. Parents are urged to discuss with the teacher or principal in advance any particular needs of their students for religious observances. Student absences for religious observances are recorded as “R” days. Religious observances of some faiths are based on a lunar calendar and may change annually. Calendar updates will be available on the RISD intranet. We are so honored to have you as a volunteer or a partner agency. It is because of you that good things are happening in the Flint Hills region! We are excited to see many of our volunteers returning after receiving the second COVID vaccination. I know it was a trying year with self-isolation and fear of the unknown. We are working on bringing events back to in-person. I was so sad to cancel our volunteer recognition event last year, but we are planning on it for this August! If you are an AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer (all volunteers over the age of 55), you will be Lori Bishop, receiving an invitation sometime in early July. Executive Director We are also working on 9/11 Day of Remembrance events that will take place on September 10th and 11th, as we observe the 20th Anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. If you are a first responder (veteran, police, fire, etc.) please let me know. I would like to utilize our retired first responders in these events as well. We are sad to be saying goodbye to our Volunteer Coordinator, Patty Karr. Patty will be moving back to the Kansas City area. -
MHC Memory Support August 2020 Happy Birthday, Hawaii! Hawaii Celebrates Statehood Day on August 21St
MHC Memory Support August 2020 Happy Birthday, Hawaii! Hawaii Celebrates Statehood Day on August 21st Statehood Day or Admission Day is a legal holiday in the state of Hawaii in the United States. It is celebrated annually on the third Friday in August to commemorate the anniversary of the state's 1959 admission to the Union. It was first celebrated in 1969. Statehood bills for Hawaii were introduced into the U.S. Congress as early as 1919 by Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole, the non-voting delegate sent by the Territory of Hawaii to the U.S. Congress. Additional bills were introduced in 1935, 1947 and 1950. In 1959, the U.S. Congress approved the statehood bill, the Hawaii Admission Act. This was followed by a referendum in which Hawaiian residents voted 94% in support of statehood (the ballot question was: "Shall Hawaii immediately be admitted into the Union as a state?"), and on August 21, 1959 (the third Friday in August), President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a proclamation making Hawaii the 50th state. Did you know? Outside of Hawaii, the third Friday of August is celebrated as "Hawaiian Shirt Day", when people are encouraged to wear a Hawaiian shirt as a way of celebrating this event. In our surveys, students have identified the cafeteria as the place where divisions are most clearly drawn. So on the last Tuesday in October each school year, we ask students to move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch. It’s a simple act with profound implications. Studies have shown that interactions across group lines can help reduce prejudice.
