  • Bill Cartwright
Bill Cartwright Bill Cartwright is a winner! He was in his basketball career, he is in his business career and he continues to be a winner in his family life. Cartwright was a 7’1” NBA center was a dominant physical presence for 3 teams. He was drafted in the 1st round of the 1979 NBA draft, #3 overall, by the New York Knicks. He made an All-Star Game appearance in his rookie season and was named to the All Rookie First Team. He was named team captain of the Knicks but 4 separate fractures to his foot began to slow him steps. Bill was traded to the Chicago Bulls in 1988 and it was here that he fully established himself as a presence. He was once again named team captain and led the Bulls to 3 consecutive NBA championships in 1991, 1992, and 1993. In 1994, he moved on as a free agent to the Seattle SuperSonics where he spent the final season of his 16 year playing career. In 1996, Bill rejoined the Chicago Bulls as an assistant coach and won two more NBA championships with the team in 1997 and 1998. In 2001, he took over the Bulls’ head coach where he remained until 2003, coaching a team that had been stripped of its best players. He moved on from Chicago to be an assistant coach with the New Jersey Nets and Phoenix Suns before spending the 2013 season coaching in Japan and 2014 as head coach of the Mexican National Team. Cartwright has firmly established himself in the business world as the owner of a car dealership and a restaurant and he recently divested himself from a successful security services firm.

  • The Inside Story of One Turbulent Season with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls Pour Chaque Appareil
Pour Kindle The Jordan Rules: The Inside Story of One Turbulent Season with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls Sam Smith’s seminal, New York Times bestselling “eye-opener” (The San Diego Union-Tribune) on Michael Jordan and the 1990-1991 Chicago Bulls team—perfect for fans of ESPN’s hit documentary series The Last Dance. This is the book that changed the way the world viewed Michael Jordan, while delivering nonstop excitement, tension, and thrills. The Jordan Rules chronicles the season that changed everything for Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. After losing in the playoffs to the “Bad Boys” Detroit Pistons for three consecutive years, the Bulls finally broke through and swept the Pistons in the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals, on the way to their first NBA championship. Celebrated sportswriter Sam Smith was there for the entire ride. He reveals a candid and provocative picture of Michael Jordan during the season in which his legacy began to be defined, and seeks to figure out what drove him. The Jordan Rules covers everything from his stormy relationships with his coaches and teammates and power struggles with management—including verbal attacks on general manager Jerry Krause and tantrums against coach Phil Jackson—to Jordan’s obsessions with becoming the leading scorer, and his refusal to pass the ball in the crucial minutes of big games. Jordan’s teammates also tell their side of the story, from Scottie Pippen, to Horace Grant, to Bill Cartwright. And Phil Jackson—the former flower child who blossomed into one of the NBA’s top motivators and finally found a way to coax Jordan and the Bulls to their first title—is studied up close.

  • Racial Double Standards? the Case of Expected Performance and Dismissals of Head Coaches In
Racial double standards? The case of expected performance and dismissals of head coaches in NBA Carlos Gomez-Gonzalez, Julio del Corral, Andrés Maroto ABSTRACT Professional basketball in the US provides an opportunity to test racial differences in the labor market. In contrast to other professional sports, such as baseball or American football, and, more deeply, to other economic sectors, black Americans are represented in influencing positions as head coaches in this competitive setting. The paper investigates the influence of the race of the coach and performance (winning ratio and an efficiency index relative to expectations) on dismissal decisions. The data includes coach- team information over a 20-year period of time in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the analysis uses several probit models. The results show that black head coaches are more likely to be fired and less prone to quit than white head coaches, ceteris paribus. Both measures of performance (efficiency and victories) also play a significant role in dismissals. Keywords: Basketball, Coaches, Dismissal, Efficiency, Race, Performance, NBA 1 1. Introduction In the words of Samuel Johnson, racial discrimination was a fact "too evident for detection and too gross for aggravation" in the American society of the first part of the 20th century (Arrow, 1998, p. 92). African Americans had a strictly limited access to certain jobs, which prevented them from creating a social network and reaching top positions (Ibarra, 1995). In recent years, although African Americans still face barriers to access leadership jobs in certain sectors, they have successfully scale top positions in professional sports, particularly in basketball.

  • Playing for the Same Team Again
Playing for the Same Team Again Matthew H. Slater & Achille C. Varzi Columbia University [Published in J. L. Walls and G. Bassham (eds.), Basketball and Philosophy. Thinking Outside the Paint, Lexington (KY): University Press of Kentucky, 2007, pp. 220–234] The following is a transcript of what might very well have been five telephone conversa- tions between Michael Jordan and former Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson in early March 1995, just before the announcement of MJ’s comeback after a year spent pursu- ing a baseball career. Day One: The Conditional Comeback Phil: Hello? Mike: Hey Phil, it’s me. Is this a bad time? Phil: It’s never a bad time, as long as I’m not deep in meditation. I was just visualiz- ing our next game. What’s up? Mike: Still thinking about my comeback. Phil: Come on Michael, give it a break. It’ll be just like old times. Two words: Re- peat Threepeat. Heck, why stop there? We’ll stamp out championship trophies like a factory, trust me. Mike: I just can’t help wondering. With no Horace, B. J., Bill, Scott . is it really go- ing to be the same team?1 You know how important that is for me. Phil: Getting philosophical in your old age, huh? Mike: Time away from basketball got me thinking. If I’m going to be part of the team again, shouldn’t I know what the team really is—whether it’ll really be the same team as before? Phil: Some might say that you’re the team.

  • Robertson Still Taking Strong Opinions to the Basket
Robertson still taking strong opinions to the basket By Peter Finney New Orleans Times-Picayune February 16, 2008 The Big O was still scoring points, not with that graceful jumper that bedeviled defenders for 14 seasons, but with words, from the hip, words from the heart. A few samples. "I'd like to see guys today try to guard Elgin Baylor. They couldn't do it. You couldn't outjump him or hang in the air longer than he did. He was unstoppable." "If there's one thing I hate, it's the zone defense. As bad as they're playing defense today, all a zone does is leave you with the feeling you don't have to guard anyone." "You look at TV shows today, you've got people rating the top 10 players, the top 30, on and on. And they haven't seen most of them play. Does that make any sense?" "You know what makes me laugh? I see a guy taking it to the basket against a 7- footer. I see the 7-footer hit the floor. Charge, says the official. I hear the guy on TV say, 'Boy, what a great defensive move.' I say to myself: 'That's crazy. Why didn't the 7-footer try to block the shot.' " Yes, Oscar Robertson, basketball's Big O, is full of opinions, the kind you can find in the man's autobiography, a book the Hall of Famer will be signing Sunday at the Barnes & Noble in Harvey. It's part of an event presented by the National Basketball Retired Players Association, which Robertson co-founded, and by the Louisiana chapter of the National Kidney Foundation, for whom the Big O has served as a national spokesperson since donating a kidney to his daughter, Tia, in 1997.
