Espinoza, Victor (HOF 2017): Born: May 23, 1972 From: Mexico City, Mexico. Born on a dairy farm in Hidalgo, Mexico, the 11th of 12 children. He grew up riding horses and when he was 17 paid for Jockey School by driving a bus in Mexico City—that was 1989 (Quote: “It’s a lot easier riding horses than driving in that traffic in Mexico City.”). He shifted his tack North of the border all the way up to Northern CA in 1994 and, while he spoke no English when he arrived in the United States he managed to be the leading apprentice rider at Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields. In 1995 he began riding in Southern CA. His first big win was in the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Distaff aboard Spain and then in 2002 he won his first of 3 Derbies and first Preakness Stakes (both aboard War Emblem). Espinoza is not married and he has no children. He donates 10% of his earnings to “City of Hope” to support pediatric cancer research. In 2015, Espinoza earned his second straight Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes victory aboard American Pharoah and was finally able accomplish something he had failed to do in 2014 (California Chrome) and 2002 (War Emblem) – he won the Triple Crown. When he crossed the finish line first in the Belmont Stakes, American Pharoah became the 12th Triple Crown winner in history and the first in 37 years. In 2015 he won his second ESPY Award for Best Jockey after also winning in 2002. Inducted into the National Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2017—3rd year in a row to be nominated.

For res- idents of Lexington, Kentucky — even those not closely attuned to racing — the name Sir Barton has an addition- al connotation, and a local one. The street Sir Barton Way is prominent in a section of the city known as Hamburg. Therein lies an additional link with history, for Sir Barton sprung from the famed Thoroughbred farm also known as Hamburg Place, which occupied the same land a century ago. The colt Sir Barton was one of four Kentucky Derby winners bred at Hamburg Place by a master of the Turf, one John E. Madden. Like the horse’s name, the name Madden also has come down through the years in a milieu of lasting and regen- erating fame.

FEBRUARY 11, 2020 GUINNESS OPEN GATE BREWERY EVENING SCHEDULE 5:00 – 6:00 COCKTAILS 6:00 – 9:00 AWARDS / DINNER ABOUT THE TROPHIES When the best of Maryland racing and breeding is celebrated this evening at the third annual Renaissance Awards, the recipients will be handed a trophy – a striking bronze of an exquisite Thoroughbred head – specifically created by artist Peggy Kauffman. Kauffman (left), an accomplished horsewoman, has been a portrait artist of more than 30 years who works in bronze sculpture and pastel painting. In addition to her portraiture, she has created trophies that are presented at Fair Hill Races, and for horse show events in New York. MHBA Executive Director Cricket Goodall had seen the work of Kauffman on display at a benefit and reached out to her about creating a Renaissance Awards trophy. 1 The bronze is approximately 11 inches long, 3 ⁄2 inches wide and 1 8 ⁄2 inches high, though a 2-inch base adds to its height. Kauffman has her bronzes cast at New Arts Foundry in Baltimore, which uses the lost wax casing process. It can take months from the time a piece of art in its clay form arrives at the foundry until the bronze is finished. Design and size are among the factors. Kauffman, who made the six-hour trip to Baltimore from her home in Millerton, N.Y., to oversee much of the process, launched her career as an artist by first going to art school in New York before taking courses at the Maryland Institute College of Art, but noted her main education was “when I worked and rode for a (show) horse dealer in New York state for years.” She had competed professionally with show and event horses.

  • The Economic Impact of the Preakness
The Economic Impact of the 2015 Preakness on the Maryland Economy Summary The 140th running of the Preakness Stakes drew a record crowd of 131,680 to historic Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, the largest attendance in Preakness history. Race-day betting nationwide was up 1.4 percent over 2014. While money brought in by betting drives the industry, in-state operations of the race, attendance at the racetrack and related events is most important in generating the economic impacts for the region and the State. For the State of Maryland, the Preakness is an opportunity to showcase its horse industry, hospitality and tourist attractions to business decision makers and a wider audience. The economic impacts of the event include not only the dollars spent on the race and by spectators, but also the positive publicity and exposure for the state, particularly the horse industry. However, the impacts that can be measured are limited to the operating expenditures of the event and the spending by visitors that would not otherwise occur. Based on the number of visitors and projected average visitor spending, this study estimated the direct, indirect and induced impact of that spending in terms of jobs, salaries and tax revenues generated. This analysis addresses direct expenditures that can be attributed to the Preakness. This includes expenditures and visitor spending for Preakness Celebration events before and after the race itself. 2015 Highlights: A crowd of 131,680 enjoyed the 140th running of the Preakness at historic Pimlico Race Course. Preakness day wagering reached $85,814,142 on the entire racing card, with $6,177,230 bet in-state.
