The Historical Geography of the Amstel Area (800–1275 AD) Netherlands Journal of Geosciences — Geologie en Mijnbouw |94 – 4 | 353–360 | 2015 doi:10.1017/njg.2014.42 Digging the river: the historical geography of the Amstel area (800–1275 AD) C. de Bont Paganellus Minor, Rhenen, the Netherlands. Email: [email protected] Manuscript received: 17 January 2014, accepted: 25 November 2014 Abstract Around 800 AD the peatlands around Amstelland were drained by two rivers. The ‘northern’ Amstel discharged surplus water directly into Lake Almere, which from the 12th century onwards was enlarged to form the Sudersee (in Dutch: Zuiderzee). The ‘southern’ Amstel was a near-abandoned westernmost arm of the River Vecht discharging the poorly drained borderland around the river Vecht into Lake Almere/the Sudersee. As part of the reclamation of peatlands associated with agricultural activities between the end of the 10th and the mid-13th centuries, the rivers were connected via a canal, thus creating the river Amstel, as it is known today.

• Age 5 Evaluation in the Amstelland Region
Information about health research for parents of children aged ± 5 years Region of Amstelland Youth Health Care To ensure that children grow up as healthy as possible and can develop well, the Youth Health Care, which is part of the GGD Amsterdam, offers advice, help and support. Health research While children are in primary school, their health and development are evaluated twice, at the ages of five and ten. If necessary, parents and children can rapidly access the correct help or support. In addition, we use data from the (anonymous) research to provide advice to schools and the municipality. Invitation and questionnaire Enclosed is an invitation to participate in the survey of five-year-olds along with a questionnaire. Please fill in this questionnaire and give it to the doctor’s assistant at your child’s school in a sealed envelope. If the Parent and Child Team in your neighbourhood is conducting the research instead of the school, then please take the questionnaire to your appointment. Participating in this research is voluntary. If you do not want to participate, please let us know by phoning: 020 555 5964. Types of questions The questionnaire asks about your child’s health and whether and how frequently he or she experiences problems at school, at home, or when interacting with other children. We also try to establish your child’s strengths: what is he or she good at doing? What does the research involve? For the research, a doctor’s assistant comes to your child’s school and measures his or her length and weight.

Martin Wassen Supervisor Deltares: Sien Kok Supervisor De Natuurverdubbelaars: Daan Groot 29-07-2020 Word count: 12,998 1 Preface After about six months of work, I hereby present the final report of my MSc. graduation research. When I started to explore the possibilities in the graduation topics and possible ways to conduct this final product of my Master's in Water Science and Management, the first decision was to look for a position where I would not only get my very last grade for university, but where I could also get acquainted with water issues in practice. Therefore, I am very grateful to Deltares and De Natuurverdubbelaars for giving me the opportunity to gain experience through a graduation internship. First of all, my appreciation goes to Sien Kok of Deltares, Daan Groot of De Natuurverdubbelaars, Carel Dieperink and my second reader, Martin Wassen, of Utrecht University, who assisted me in this intensive project, also in times of COVID-19, and provided me with their useful and refreshing insights and criticism. Furthermore, I would like to thank my colleagues and fellow interns of Deltares and De Natuurverdubbelaars for the support and information they have given me on this versatile subject. Finally, I would like to thank Stefan, and my friends and family, especially my father and my brothers Bas and Jeroen, for reading my thesis and for the necessary distraction during the weekends, especially in these odd times with COVID-19.
