Kertas karya ini berjudul “Deskripsi Nilai-Nilai Moral dalam Lirik Lagu Terpilih Charlie Puth”. Diskusi dalam makalah ini berfokus tentang nilai-nilai moral pada lagu Charlie Puth di album Nine Track Mind. Nilai-nilai moral adalah nilai-nilai yang digunakan oleh masyarakat dalam bentuk norma atau aturan. Perilaku baik atau buruk disebut sebagai nilai-nilai moral. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan nilai-nilai moral dan pentingnya nilai-nilai moral dalam kehidupan yang digambarkan dalam lirik lagu yang dipilih Charlie Puth. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode Analisis Deskriptif. Sumber data adalah enam lirik dari album Charlie Puth. Teknik yang digunakan untuk mengdeskripsikan data ini yaitu dengan melakukan beberapa langkah, antara lain dengan membaca enam lirik dari album Charlie Puth, memahami isi lirik lagu Charlie Puth, dan mendeskripsikan jenis nilai moral dalam lirik lagu yang dipilih Charlie Puth. Setelah mendeskripsikan nilai-nilai moral, dapat disimpulkan bahwa lirik lagu yang dipilih Charlie Puth adalah lagu yang menarik.Lagu ini menyangkut pengalaman pribadi kehidupan manusia yang dicerminkan melalui cinta, kesetiaan, yang mengacu pada kepercayaan, ketulusan, dan menghormati orang lain. Selain itu, penggambaran nilai-nilai moral yang ditemukan dalam lirik lagu biasanya dekat dari kehidupan penyanyi, dapat menggambarkan perilaku masyarakat, yang baik atau buruk.

This study is entitled “A Description of Moral Values in Charlie Puth’s Selected Song Lyrics”. The discussion on this paper focuses about the moral values on Charlie Puth’s song in Nine Track Mind album. The moral values is the values used by society in the form of norms or rules. Good or bad behavior referred to as moral values. The study is aimed to describes the moral values and the significance of moral values in life portrayed in Charlie Puth’s selected song lyrics. The research method used in this study is Descriptive Analysis method. The source of data are six lyrics from Charlie Puth’s album. The data of this study were description by reading six lyrics from album Charlie Puth’s, understanding the contents of Charlie Puth’s song lyrics, and description kinds of moral values in Charlie Puth’s selected song lyrics. After description the moral values, it can be concluded that Charlie Puth’s selected song lyrics is an interesting song. It concern with some parts of human’s life true experience that is about love, loyalty, which reflected to believe, sincerity, and respecting others. In addition, the depiction of moral values found in the song lyrics are usually close from the singer’s life, it can describes the society’s behavior, which is good or bad.

1.1 Background of the study

Literary work is the result of human mind. Creation in addition to providing entertainment but literary work also give the values such as, moral value, religion, educational, and sociological value. Peoples can know the moral value, the composition of customs, religion, and other people‟s view of life or society through literary works. Literary works with human have an inseparable relationship.

Literature is a reflection of human life. The kind of literary works are poem, song, lyrics, novel, movie, drama and etc. Music is part of literary work.

Music is a tone or sound that it can contain beautiful rhythms, songs, and harmony especially for the sound produced or created from the tools that can indeed produce a rhythm. Music is avery important component in human life. Music may represent the bad or good of human felling, it is able to express their thoughts, experiences, emotions, and faith. Besides that , music can also create memories when they are listening to each song.

Music has amazing benefits such as, music makes you happier, music enhances running performance, music lowers stress and improves health, music helps you sleeps better, music raises IQ and academic performance, music helps you sleep better, and etc. In music there is also a moral value without us knowing it, for example as in the Charlie puth songs.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA The word moral comes from latin “mores” that has a habit. Then translated or translated into “moral code” or a term used to define a boundary of another role, will, opinion or limitation of deeds that can reasonably be said to be true, wrong, good or bad. Moral in general leads to the notion of teach about the good or bad received about the deeds, attitudes, duties, manners, and so forth. Teenagers are said to be moral if they have moral awareness of being able to judge good and bad things, things that can be done and should not be done and things that are ethical and unethical. A moral teenager will naturally appear in his moral judgment and reasoning as well as in his good, righteous, ethical behavior. People have to improve and maintain their good moral. Morality is a common word to say, but it is very difficult to imply in human‟s daily life. Since people were born, they have been taught about morality, however as the time goes by, the morality is decreasing.

Morality is something that must be owned by human because without morality human will not be respected by other people. It will be easy for people to socialize with other and they will be accepted in the community.

Moral value can be well delivered by using music, because many people use song to express their felling at the moment. It can give enjoyment, fun, and pleasure in studying. As in this analysis the author will discuss the message that can be found in the lyrics of song suggested the moral for many people who like to listening to music.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA In this analysis the author will discuss about moral value contained in the song in singing by one of the world famous singers namely ChaliePuth. Charlie Puth is a solo singer who already has many popular songs and now he has two albums,

Nine Track Mind and Voicenotes. His debut studio album, Nine Track Mind, was released in January 2016 with 14 songs and in 2017, he released his new album

Voicenotes and now there are 5 songs in it.

Charlie puth has released two album where both are well know all over the world. The hearers also want to sing and memorize the song anytime because every song has many meanings and moral values or message in the songs. From discussion above, it is very challenging or interesting to do a research about the moral values in song lyrics.

1.2 Problem of thestudy

In analyzing moral values in Charlie Puth‟s selected song lyrics, the problem of study are:

1) How is loyalty as moral values in Charlie Puth‟s selected song lyrics ?

2) How is sincerity as moral values in in Charlie Puth‟s selected song lyrics ?

1.3 Objective of the study

The writers has some objectives in writing this study, they are as following:

1) To analysis the moral values in Charlie Puth‟s selected song lyrics.

1.4 Scope of the study

The writer only discusses the moral values from Charlie Puth‟s selected song lyrics. The moral values discussed only include the belief to judge what is right or wrong, good or bad, moral or immoral contained in the song lyrics. The writer chooses 6 songs from Nine Track Mind albums, they are : (1) One Call Away, (2) We

Don‟t Talk Anymore, (3) See You Again,(4) Some Type of Love, (5) Left Right Left, and (6) My Gospel. Because those selected songs is very interesting to know the moral values contained in it.

1.5 Significance of the study

The analysis of this paper is expected to give some benefits to the readers.

Significance of this analysis is to give more understanding about moral values found in literary works especially song. And also this paper is expected to expand knowledge, useful in the development of quality and learning outcomes.

1.6 Method of the study

The method used in this study is descriptive analysis method. Descriptive method is a method in examining the status of a group of people, an object, a set of conditions, a system of thought or a class of events in the present. The purpose of this descriptive study is to create a description, or painting systematically, factually and accurately about the facts, properties and relationships between phenomena

Of the method can be explained moral values and the purpose contained in the lyrics, moreover the writer collected the data from booksin the library and also will search the information from internet.

2.1 Literature

Literature comes from the latin “litteratura” which is etymologically derived from the word littera (letter or hand writing). Literature is writing considered to be an art form, or any single writing deemed to have artistic or intellectual value.

According to MursalEsten (1978 : 9) literature is the expression of artistic facts and imaginative as a manifestation of human life, (society) through language as a medium and has a positive effect on human life (humanity). Semi (1988 : 8) said that literature is the result of creative work whose object is people and their life using language as media.

Panutisudjiman (1986 : 68) said that literature is written or oral work that has various eminence characteristics such as originality, artistic, beauty in it is content and expression. From those three definition can be concluded that there are three important elements in literature, they are imaginative, real, and beautiful language.

Literature is real story abot people and their life which is added by the author imagination which is delivered using beautiful language.

Rees (1973 : 9) said that permanent expression in words of some thoughts or feelings or ideas about life and the world. It means in a literary work the men of letters have a freedom to express their ideas and improve their imagination. There are three major divisions of literature, they are prose, drama and poetry. According to

Thomas Carlyle poetry is an “expression of the musical mind. The poet created the

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA poetry in the minds of the melodious sounds of music in his poetry, the words arranged in such a way that the prominent is a series of melodious sounds like music, that is by using sound orchestra”. Indirectly poetry almost have in common with song, so it is not uncommon to mention that poetry is the embryo of a song or the song is a revolutionary of poetry. Like a poetry, inside the song there are lyrics.

According to Jan Van Luxemburg (1989) “the definition of song lyrics poem can be regarded as poetry and otherwise. Such as the definition of poetry texts not only include literary types but also advertisements, proverbs, slogans, and pop song poems”. Delish (1971 : 149) added that “originally the lyric was a poem composed if being sung, or at least so constructed as to be appropriate for singing”. It means that lyrics are included in the type of poetry and song.

2.2 Value In Literature

Value is a concept that points to something that is considered valuable in life.

Something said to be valuable because it is good, proper, true, and beautiful.

Likewise, the opposite of things that are inappropriate, bad, wrong, and not beautiful regarded as something that is not valuable. Value is a basis or reason in a behavior and attitude, whether done consciously or not. Value can also be interpreted as the nature of something that affects human life, both inward, and inner.

According to Antony Giddens (1995) “values are an idea that a person or a group has about what is worth, what is desired, and what is good and bad”. Horton &

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Hunt (1987) said “values are an idea of whether an action is important or unimportant”. Richard T.Schaefer and Robert P.Lmm (1998) said “values are a collective idea of what is considered, important, decent, and desirable. At once about what is considered unimportant, not good, not feasible, and not desirable in terms of culture. Values refer to something that is considered important in human life, whether it is as an individual or as a member of society”. Black‟s Law Dictionary (1990 :

1550) said “the utility an object in satisfying, directly or indirectly, the needs or desires of human beings, called by economists value in it is, or it is worth consisting in the power of purchasing other objects, called value in exchange”. John dewey says

“value is any object of social interest”. From some sense of values according to the expert then it can be concluded that the notion of value is a abstract conception in human about what is good perceived and not good. It is clear that, the values influence what people will determine as ethical.

2.3 Definition of Moral Values

Moral

Moral comes from latin word “Mos” (plural: mores) which means custom and folkways. The word “mos” (mores) in latin is synonymous with ethos in greek. In the

Indonesian language, the word moral is translated with a ethics. The most common moral understanding is human action in accordance with the ideas generally accepted,

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA that is related to the meaning of good and reasonable. The word moral always refers to the good and bad of human acts as human beings.

According to Chaplin (2006) “moral refers to moral in accordance with social rules, or concerning laws or customs that govern behavior”. Hurlock (1990) says

“moral is the ordinance, customs, and customs of behavioral rules that have become a habit for members of a culture”. Wantah (2005) says “moral is something that is related or has something to do with the ability to determine right or wrong and good or bad behavior”. RusselSwanburg says “moral is a statement of thought that relates to one‟s enthusiasm or enthusiasm in work”.

According to Soeparno (1992:5) “moral is the basic doctrine or principle about good and bad values of actions and behavior in life human beings in the private, family, community, nation and states”. Shaffer (1994) as quoted in Shaffer,

(2009: 532) mentions “morals as the capacity: 1) distinguish between wrong and right, 2) different actions, and 3) proud experience in good acts and there is guilt while acts outside standard norm”. Moral is an essential need for everyone, especially teenagers, is moral a guide for finding a teenagers identity, develop harmonious personal relationships, and avoid role conflicts that always occur in a teenage transition. A person can be considered moral if the persons behavior is in accordance with the moral values upheld by it is social groups. Morality is the one who acts based on his actions on the judgment of good and bad things. Morality according to

Syamsu Yusuf (2009: 132) is “a will to accept and enforce rules, values or principles moral”.

Moral Values

Moral values are set of principles guiding us to evaluate what is wrong. Moral values help shape the character and personality of individuals. Children are taught about it through moral stories. Moral values such as integrity, determination, loyalty, truthfulness, honesty, giving respect to each other etc should be inherited by every individual. Because moral values help us distinguish between what is right and wrong, good or bad for you as well as society. So, as a result, your decision making power improves naturally. WiwitWahyuning (2003) says “when someone talks about moral values in general will be heard as attitudes and acts of each individual to the lives of others”. Uzey (2009) also says that “moral value is a part of value, the value that handles good or bad behavior of human beings”. A moral values can only be manifested in acts that are entirely the responsibility of the person concerned, the acts derives from the persons initiative” Bertens (2013:114).

Moral values are by affected three things, namely religious teachings, custom, and ideology.

1) Moral values are sourced from religion

Every religion contains a moral teaching. The moral teachings contained in a

religion include several rules. Religion explains and shows moral values for

human beings is very important. So, religion can give effort to develop human

noble and virtuous, religion also can strengthen obedience to moral values.

In the life of society there are various rules, likewise custom. In custom there

are also moral teachings. Moral teachings include rules which correspond to

morals and values prevailing in it. Infraction of the custom rules will receive

severe punishment.

3) Moral values are sourced from ideology

Ideology in interpreted as ideas or notions. Ideology is life guidelines in

thinking both in terms of personal life, general, or in a particular field.

2.4 Song Lyric

According to Muliono (2007:678) the lyrics have two meanings: (1) literary work (poems) that contain the outpourings of personal feelings, (2) the composition of a song. In using the lyrics of a poet / songwriter it must be really clever in word processing. According to Noor (2004:24) the lyrics are expressions of the author‟s feelings. This lyrics is now known as poetry, which is a literary work that contains the expression of personal feelings that prioritize the way of expressing it. While the arts, especially the song, is part of the culture. Through the song, people express their feelings, hopes, aspirations, and ideals, which represent the outlook on life and the spirit of the age. Therefore, through art, we can also capture the ideas.

According to Moeliono (2007:624) „the song is a rhythmic sound. The song is a work of art of the relationship of sound art and the art of language, as the work of

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA sound art involves the melody and the color of the singers voice”. From that opinion, it can be concluded that song lyrics is an expression of a poet from within her inward about something that has been seen, heard or experienced. Song lyrics is also a combined artwork between sound art and poetic language art, the language is short and there is a rhythm with a unified sound and the selection of imaginative words and involving melody and singers voice. Song lyric have similarities with rhyme, only in the song lyrics has it is own peculiarity because the pouring of ideas through song lyrics reinforced with melody and the type of rhythm that is tailored to the song lyrics and the color of the singers voice.

3.1 Description of Moral Values in Charlie puth’s Selected Songs

The Description of Moral Values

As the writer explains in the previous chapter, moral values is a standard than can help us to determine the type of action that is appropriate and useful, whether it is right or wrong. In the nine track mind song lyric, the writer find the moral values delivered by the singer. The analysis based on the 6 lyrics of Charlie Puth‟s album, they are :

1) One Call Away

The first description is One Call Away is one of songs by American singer

Charlie Puth for his debut album Nine Track Mind. It was released on August 20,

2015 by Atlantic Records as the second single Marvin Gaye. One Call Away is a

gospel infused pop soul song. It reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100,

making it Puth‟s third top 40 single in the US and his third highest charting single

as a led artist to date. As in the description of song lyrics below:

No matter where you go You know you're not alone I'm only one call away I'll be there to save the day Superman got nothing on me I'm only one call away

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA In the song lyrics above, the singer want to describe in our daily life, we often

find and hear various problems about love relationship for example about loyalty.

In a relationship must have a loyalty, but many people can‟t keep that loyalty

because there some reasons. But in this song the singer tells about someone who

always there for a someone he likes and never leave her when at moment of

sadness, both can keep the relationship alive even when far apart and one of the

keys is trust and loyalty. So trust and loyalty is very important in a relationship

because it is the mandate and responsibility of our partner to make himself the

only one in our hearts.

2) We Don‟t Talk Anymore

The next description is We Don‟t Talk Anymore, it contains guest vocals

from SelenaGomez. The song was released on May 24, 2016 as the third from the

album. Musically, it is a popsong with a tropical inspired production. The song

peaked at number 9 on the US Billboard Hot 100, earning puth his second top 10

single. It has also attained the top 10 positions in more than 20 countries, and

reached number one in Italy, Lebanon, Serbia and Romania. As in the description

of song lyrics below:

In the song lyrics above, in a love relationship does not always happy for

example, such as breakup. This song tells about a couple of lovers who have

breakup and they have to end the relationship, they do not talk to each other like

people who don‟t know each other. This song also quips lovers who hurt each

other as if they don‟t appreciate their relationship and until they regret and can‟t

move on and flashback to their past. So, whatever and whoever you have now you

must keep it. Respect someone who is at your side now because when someone

goes away from us we can do is regret, because only by losing you will

understand how valuable one‟s presence is, just by losing you will know how it

feels to regret.

3) See You Again

The next description is See You Again, see you again is a song

recorded by American rapper Wiz Khalifa, featuring American singer Charlie

Puth. The track was commissioned for the soundtrack of the 2015 action film

Furious 7 as a tribute to the late actor Paul Walker. Later on, the song was

included as a bonus track on the international release of Puth‟s debut album, Nine

Track Mind.” See you again” was released on March 10, 2015, as the

soundtrack‟s lead single in the United States. As in the description of song lyrics

below:

This song tells about a friendship and remembers a friend who has died. This

song describes sadness. At the beginning of the song, the songwriter said that he

really missed his dead friend, he really want to say that when he met his friend

again (in heaven). This song was clearly created to commemorate the Paul

Walker who died in a car accident. So it can be concluded that the relationship of

friendship is one of the important relationship in our lives. A friendship is the

person closest to us, always understands us, and who is always there when we are

happy or difficult. Friendship will not be separated forever even though it has

died because in a meeting there must be separation, even so friendship will

always be remember together.

4) Some Type of Love

The next description is Some Type of Love, it is the third extended play (EP)

by American singer Charlie Puth. It was released on May 1, 2015 by Atlantic

Recordsand Artist Partner Group. As in the description of song lyrics below:

In the song lyric above, tell about love stories or some type of love that are

always done together with their partners, even when they are old and grown. At

any moment and any time, when happy or sad nothing changes from the beauty of

love when do it with a partner. So it is true that a true love never leaves you and

will remain beside you until you are old. Past every moment together, happy

together, sad together, always there for you and will never go away from you

despite whatever happens.

5) Left Right Left

 Charlie Puth was born on 2 December 1991, in Rumson, New Jersey, in the

United States. His mother is Debra, a music teacher who has also written

commercials for HBO, and his father is Charles Puth, a builder and real estate

agent. They have three children, Charlie being the oldest one.

 When he was only two years old, he survived a near fatal dog bite incident.

However, his right eyebrow received a permanent scar.

 He attended the Holy Cross School and Forrestdale Middle School before he

finally graduated from the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School in

2010. During his school days he started playing the piano.

 Along with his regular schooling he attended the Manhattan School of Music
