2013 EDITION Mandela statue unveiled to celebrate the Lebogang Matji

he City of Tshwane came alive once again in celebrating, mourning and honouring former TPresident Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela at the Day of Reconciliation celebration on 16 December 2013 at the . This year’s celebration will go down in history as the greatest has ever witnessed.

President unveiled the much antici- pated nine metre bronze statue of stretching out his arms to embrace our diverse nation. In attendance were dignitaries, the Mandela family, the media fraternity and thousands who had come to witness the remarkable occasion.

The day also marked the centenary of the Union Buildings, one of the architectural masterpieces of South Africa. The iconic Union Buildings was also declared a national heritage site by President Zuma.

The unveiling of the statue is an acknowledge- ment of Madiba’s contribution as the first president of a democratic South Africa. The statue is also a symbol of national reconciliation and unity. As such, it is set to become a site of pilgrimage for domestic and international visitors.

To many, it is no coincidence that the unveiling happened a day after the burial of the stalwart of democracy, at the place where he was inaugurated as president and where he lay in state. The unveil- ing sealed the ten days of mourning declared by the government and was a befitting tribute to a larger than life icon, a man who paid a supreme sacrifice for his Photo: Sikhumbuzo G.
