Richardson Berry’s letter It is an absolutely beautiful fall day as I write this letter to you. The leaves have changed, the air is crisp, and the sun is warm as it streams through my window. I watch a lot of the world go by in its ever changing seasons from my chair and I must say that I feel happy and blessed. Of course, it is hard for me to get up to camp and see all that is going on, but I do manage to get to “colors” and some other larger events. I have had the joy of watching my granddaughters grow up at camp with Kanchan now entering her AC year. Maya, cute little button that she is, is coming full season next summer as a JC I and I can’t wait. However, it just doesn’t seem possible that they have moved along through camp so quickly. They bring me much interesting news of the goings on at camp during the summer. Right after the summer, I attended the wonderful wedding of my sister Frances’ grandson Garran to Christie Cepetelli.

  • Dear Environmental Protection Agency Employees
December 14, 2017 (Updated May 7, 2018) Dear Environmental Protection Agency Employees, This letter is written to express support and thanks for the work you do every day to protect public health and the environment. We want you to know your dedication is valued by millions of Americans despite indication that the current Administration feels otherwise. Equally important, we also write to better inform members of the public who may not understand what a frontline role you play in preventing premature death, other avoidable health consequences, irreversible ecosystem damage, and yes, even climate change. States, Tribes, and EPA play vital roles in protecting Americans and the environment from the impacts of pollution. In the late 60s and early 70s, our Congressional leaders created a system of environmental protection based on the principle of cooperative federalism. For this reason, and today more than ever, the safeguarding of our health and natural resources depends on robust state and Tribal programs as well as a fully functioning EPA. In every part of this country, you provide vital expertise and guidance, in partnership with the states and Tribes, by setting pollution limits to protect public health and the environment, facilitating development of multi-state solutions to pollution, using sound science to inform and address complex environmental challenges, responding to extreme weather events and catastrophes, and assisting states and Tribes with monitoring, enforcement and compliance. All of these functions (and there are many more) creates a level playing field among states and industry, which in turn guarantees a level of protection against harmful pollution for all Americans, regardless of where you live.

The myth of the unbeatable fighter is just that, a myth. In what will go down as the single most memorable UFC fight in history, Ronda Rousey was not only defeated, but systematically destroyed by a fighter and a coaching staff that had spent years preparing for that night. On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds.

  • Games and Metaphor – a Critical Analysis of the Metaphor Discourse in Game Studies
IT University of Copenhagen Center for Computer Games Research Games and Metaphor – A critical analysis of the metaphor discourse in game studies Sebastian Martin Möring This dissertation is submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) at IT University of Copenhagen. Candidate: Sebastian Martin Möring Dalføret 11 2300 Copenhagen S Denmark +45 50122497 [email protected] Supervisor: Espen Aarseth September 2013 2 3 Abstract This doctoral dissertation critically investigates how the concept of metaphor is used with regard to games in game studies. The goal is to provide the field with a self-understanding of its metaphor discourse which has not been researched so far. The thesis departs from the observation that the notion of metaphor has been present in the discourse of game studies since it emerged as an academic field and focuses on questions such as: What are the motivations and effects of calling games metaphors in the game studies discourse? Which problems arise from that with regard to other established concepts in game studies such as simulation and procedural rhetoric? How do concepts and insights of contemporary metaphor theory affect the applicability of the notion of metaphor with regard to games? Drawing on concepts from metaphor theory (in particular the cognitive linguistic view on metaphor), play and game theory, cultural theory, semiotics, linguistics, philosophy, and game studies it investigates the metaphor discourse of game studies in the fashion of a meta-study. The main part of this thesis is devoted to three particular problems which have been derived from observations in the overview of the current use of the notion of metaphor in game studies.
