Introduction The ArtReefs project, based on a consortium of public and private actors from the Mediterranean and Black Sea Basins, promotes the use of novel artificial reefs for sustainable maritime tourism, environmental restoration and coastal planning. An overview of the legislative and policy frameworks is included in D1.1 Joint Vision. An overview of challenges and opportunities as expressed by stakeholders and a regional SWOT analysis are included in D1.2 Action Plan. Analysis on how to design, deploy and maintain artificial reef infrastructures for tourism and inclusive Blue Growth is presented in D.1.3 Artificial Reefs for Blue Growth Guidelines. For more information, and to access these and other public deliverables, please visit: www.artreefs.eu. B. Why is this guide needed? The growth of the international tourism, especially in 2017, is a prerequisite for a further rapid development of the sector. According to the European Travel Commission, crucial for the future of the sector in Europe remains the tourism demand from intra-regional markets1. Remaining on a positive path, the development for this year is marked by an increase in international tourist arrivals. The growth in the region mirrors also the efforts of destinations to reduce seasonality. One of the efforts is directed to the deployment of artificial reefs. Over the past 40 years artificial reefs in Europe have been developed with different aims: conservation and restoration of nature, fish stock enhancement, fishery management and improvement, aquaculture,

    Chapter 27. Tourism and Recreation Group of Experts: Alan Simcock (Lead member) and Lorna Inniss 1. Introduction Seaside holidays have a long history. They were popular for several hundred years (100 BCE – 400) among the ruling classes of the Roman Empire: these visited the coast of Campania, the Bay of Naples, Capri and Sicily for swimming, boating, recreational fishing and generally lounging about (Balsdon, 1969). But thereafter seaside holidaying largely fell out of fashion. In the mid-18th century, the leisured classes again began frequenting seaside resorts, largely as a result of the health benefits proclaimed by Dr. Richard Russell of Brighton, England, in 1755 (Russell, 1755). Seaside resorts such as Brighton and Weymouth developed in England, substantially helped by the royal patronage of Kings George III and George IV of Great Britain (Brandon, 1974). After the end of the Napoleonic wars, similar developments took place across Europe, for example at Putbus, on the island of Rügen in Germany (Lichtnau, 1996). The development of railway and steamship networks led both to the development of long-distance tourism for the wealthy, with the rich of northern Europe going to the French Riviera, and to more local mass tourism, with new seaside resorts growing up to serve the working classes of industrialised towns in all countries where industrialisation took place. In England, whole towns would close down for a “wakes week”, and a large part of the population would move to seaside resorts to take a holiday: for example, in 1860 in north-west England, 23,000 travelled from the one town of Oldham alone for a week in the seaside resort of Blackpool (Walton, 1983).

Kenzer, Thesis Director This thesis descnbes the first fifty years of the creation of Virginia Beach as a seaside resort. It demonstrates the importance of railroads in promoting the resort and suggests that Virginia Beach followed a similar developmental pattern to that of other ocean resorts, particularly those ofthe famous New Jersey shore. Virginia Beach, plagued by infrastructure deficiencies and overshadowed by nearby Ocean View, did not stabilize until its promoters shifted their attention from wealthy northerners to Tidewater area residents. After experiencing difficulties exacerbated by the Panic of 1893, the burning of its premier hotel in 1907, and the hesitation bred by the Spanish American War and World War I, Virginia Beach enjoyed robust growth during the 1920s. While Virginia Beach is often perceived as a post- World War II community, this thesis argues that its prewar foundation was critical to its subsequent rise to become the largest city in Virginia.

    THE SPA AND SEASIDE RESORT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF EURO- MEDITERRANEAN TRAVEL AND TOURISM – THE CASE OF BRIJUNI ISLANDS NATAŠA UROŠEVIĆ | 53 | Juraj Dobrila University of Pula, Croatia The paper will offer a new perspective in elaboration of key phases of the tourism development on the Brijuni Islands, by analysing their important function as an élite Mediterranean spa and seaside resort in a transnational framework. The author will show how cultural practices and patterns of tourist behav- iour, characteristic for European early spa and seaside resorts, spread throughout Mediterranean during the 19th and early 20th century. Similar to an established network of European spas, transnational cultural transfers and common features characterized also a Euro-Mediterranean network of climatic seaside resorts. Many of them developed on the place of an- cient spas and aristocratic residences, such as the first modern élite resorts in Italy and France. We can follow a similar process in the Adriatic, where first climatic spas patronized by royalty attracted a fashionable clientele. The author explored and com- pared some of the well-known island aristocratic residences, such as the Isle of Wight, the Hyėres Islands, Capri, Mallorca, Corfu and Brijuni. The conducted research indicated that the beginnings of modern tourism in the Adriatic followed existing patterns of the European leading spa and seaside resorts. The main contribution of this paper would be in linking revitalisa- tion of unique cultural heritage with a local tourist tradition as a model for sustainable development.     U.S. Lighthouse Society ~ Lighthouses of the United Kingdom St. Maryʹs Lighthouse (St. Maryʹs Island, Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear) History St. Mary's Island is a small island made of sandstone near the seaside resort of Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear. St. Mary's Island was originally called Bates Island, Hartley Bates or Bates Hill as it was originally owned by the Bates family who were prominent locally. It is sometimes known as Bait Island, probably due to a misunderstanding of the meaning of the name. The island is opposite Curry's Point on the mainland and is connected to the coast at low tide by a rocky causeway. The main feature of the island is St. Mary's Lighthouse. The lighthouse and adjacent keepers' cottages were built in 1898 by the John Miller company of Tynemouth, using 645 blocks of stone and 750,000 bricks. It was built on the site of a monastery where A NON-PROFIT HISTORICAL & EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY U.S. Lighthouse Society ~ Lighthouses of the United Kingdom a small sanctuary light would have acted as a guide to passing ships. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1984 and stands at 38m (120 foot) in height. In medieval times there was a chapel on the island dedicated to St Helen. Within the chapel was the Lady Light, also known as St. Katherine's Light. The light was later, wrongly, ascribed to St. Mary and, as a result, the island became known as St. Mary's Island. It is debatable whether the light was used as a warning to shipping or was purely religious.

These changes took a sharp increase in recent years. Global changes such as climatic changes and species introductions are superim- posed on more or less local habitat degradation, pollution and overexploitation. A detailed knowledge of the taxonomic composition of the flora and fauna at a local scale is important because it represents the only mean to assess subtle changes in the distribution and abundance of species, in particular of rare species. The present study discusses 15 interesting macroalgal species from the French Mediterranean coast. Among them, Antithamnion amphigeneum, A. piliferum, Cordylecladia guiryi, Goniotrichiopsis sublittoralis, Jania adhae- rens, Laurencia chondrioides and Phyllophora sicula are reported and described for the first time from the region and 7 species are considered as introduced. For each species, the geo- graphical distribution and the ecology are discussed.
