Disney Channels Prep for Earth Day With Themed Content 04.15.2020 Disney Channel will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and the 25th anniversary of the Disney Conservation Fund with previously recorded interstitials led by cast members at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park beginning Monday, April 20. The channel also will feature a full day of Earth Day programming on Wednesday, April 22, with a National Geographic special titled Born Wild: The Next Generation, the Disneynature films Monkey Kingdom and Penguins, and environmentally-themed episodes of series Bunk'd, Big City Greens, Coop and Cami Ask the World, Raven's Home and Sydney to the Max. Above, Christian J. Simon and Ava Kolker from Disney Channel's Sydney to the Max demonstrate one of the interstitials, taking a quick tour of Disney's Animal Kingdom where the pair learn all about animals, including an okapi and a baby porcupine. Disney Junior will spotlight themed episodes of the popular series Mira, Royal Detective, Mickey Mouse Mixed-Up Adventures, T.O.T.S., Muppet Babies and Puppy Dog Pals. The channel also will present on-air messages designed to introduce preschoolers to Earth Day themes of taking care of animals and the world around them. â€‹Disney Junior Celebrates Earth Day Disney XD will offer viewers a full-day marathon of the animated series Amphibia, followed by a presentation of the acclaimed DisneyNature film Born in China. The DisneyNOW app will feature an Earth Day Collection and a 10-minute extended version of the Disney's Animal Kingdom interstitials. From Disney to Disaster: The Disney Corporation’s Involvement in the Creation of Celebrity Trainwrecks BY Kelsey N. Reese Spring 2021 WMNST 492W: Senior Capstone Seminar Dr. Jill Wood Reese 2 INTRODUCTION The popularized phrase “celebrity trainwreck” has taken off in the last ten years, and the phrase actively evokes specified images (Doyle, 2017). These images usually depict young women hounded by paparazzi cameras that are most likely drunk or high and half naked after a wild night of partying (Doyle, 2017). These girls then become the emblem of celebrity, bad girl femininity (Doyle, 2017; Kiefer, 2016). The trainwreck is always a woman and is usually subject to extra attention in the limelight (Doyle, 2017). Trainwrecks are in demand; almost everything they do becomes front page news, especially if their actions are seen as scandalous, defamatory, or insane. The exponential growth of the internet in the early 2000s created new avenues of interest in celebrity life, including that of social media, gossip blogs, online tabloids, and collections of paparazzi snapshots (Hamad & Taylor, 2015; Mercer, 2013). What resulted was 24/7 media access into the trainwreck’s life and their long line of outrageous, commiserable actions (Doyle, 2017). Kristy Fairclough coined the term trainwreck in 2008 as a way to describe young, wild female celebrities who exemplify the ‘good girl gone bad’ image (Fairclough, 2008; Goodin-Smith, 2014). While the coining of the term is rather recent, the trainwreck image itself is not; in their book titled Trainwreck, Jude Ellison Doyle postulates that the trainwreck classification dates back to feminism’s first wave with Mary Wollstonecraft (Anand, 2018; Doyle, 2017).

"SYDNEY TO THE MAX" Now in its third season, Disney Channel's popular daughter/father comedy "Sydney to the Max" continues to strike the perfect balance of humor and heart while showcasing hilarious adventures about friendship, family and the twists and turns of growing up. Set in the present day with flashbacks to the 1990s, the live-action comedy follows outgoing middle schooler Sydney Reynolds who lives with her single dad Max in the house he grew up in, along with her free-spirited grandmother Judy. As Sydney navigates being a teenager alongside her bestie Olive, Max's flashbacks of his childhood with his best friend Leo parallel her adventures, illustrating how life's "growing pains" evolve but don't really change. Geared for Kids 6-11 and their families, the series delivers its boldest season yet as Sydney and her friends—as well as Young Max and Leo in the 90s—embark on eighth grade. Their worlds become a bit more complex as they take on challenging and relevant issues, including struggles with cultural identity, trying to fit in, coping with divorce, and the impact of microaggressions. Other relatable stories rounding out the new season touch on the pitfalls of social media, the funny moments when dealing with your crush, and trying to bounce back from having to throw a virtual bat mitzvah get-together instead of your dream celebration. No matter the decade, there is never a dull moment in the Reynolds' household as Sydney becomes even more determined to discover and express her authentic self, and Young Max finds his stride and a hint of his future in the 90s.

Hugo van Lawick/National Geographic Creative Children under quarantine are enjoying an excess of “screen time,” if only to give their overtaxed parents a break. But there’s no reason they can’t learn a few things in the process. These nature documentaries have educational value for the whole family, while also offering a chance to experience the great outdoors from inside your living room.Being self-isolated makes one happy to have a project — plus, it would feel good to write something that might put a happy spin on this situation we are in, even if for just a few moments. ‘The Living Desert’ (1953) Disney’s True-Life Adventures series is a fascinating experiment in edu-tainment, an attempt to give nature footage the quality of a Disney animated film, with dramatic confrontations and silly little behavioral vignettes. There are more entertaining examples than “The Living Desert” — the 1957 gem “Perri,” about the plight of a female tree squirrel, is an ideal companion piece for “Bambi” — but it was the company’s first attempt at a feature-length documentary and established a formula that would be used decades down the line. Shot mostly in the Arizona desert, the film marvels over the animals that live in such an austere climate while also focusing on familiar scenarios, like two male tortoises tussling over a female or scorpions doing a mating dance to hoedown music.
