Jervis Bay, in the B. spinulosa complex. Phenetic analysis of individuals from all named taxa in the B. spinulosa complex, including B. sp. Jervis Bay, based on leaf, floral, seed and bract characters support recognition of this species, which is described here as Banksia vincentia M.L.Stimpson & P.H.Weston. Known only from fourteen individuals, B. vincentia is distinguished by its semi-prostrate habit, with basally prostrate, distally ascending branches from the lignotuber, and distinctive perianth colouring. Its geographical location and ecological niche also separate it from its most similar congeners. Introduction The Banksia spinulosa complex has a complicated taxonomic history (Table 1). A revision of south-western Australian species of Micromyrtus (Myrtaceae) with five antisepalous ribs on the hypanthium. Nuytsia 15(1): 101–122 (2002). Among the species currently included in Micromyrtus Benth., two main categories are distinguished here on the basis of hypanthium ribbing, one characterised by having antipetalous ribs and usually also antisepalous ones, the other by having antisepalous ribs but no antipetalous ones. Most species belong to the latter category, including the lectotype selected here for the genus, Micromyrtus drummondii Benth. nom. superfl. [= M. obovata (Turcz.) J.W. Green]. A key is given to the 14 Western Australian members of this group, and the eight south-western species, including five new species, are revised. Micromyrtus erichsenii Hemsl. is reinstated and the new species M. monotaxis Rye, M. ninghanensis Rye, M. papillosa J.W. Green ex Rye, M. rogeri J.W. Green ex Rye and M. uniovula Rye are illustrated. Three of these new species have an ovule number of one, lower than any previously recorded for the genus, and four of them have conservation priority. Introduction Micromyrtus is an endemic Australian genus belonging to the Chamelaucium alliance (cf. Briggs & Johnson 1979) of the Myrtacaeae. No formal sections or other infrageneric groups have been named in Micromyrtus, although the genus was reduced to a section of Thryptomene Endl. -

Two of the new modems they sent out did not work and each took eight days to arrive by post. It was very frustrating just when I needed the computer to be operational. The weather here has been very erratic. There was no rain in October until the last day when 18mm fell. There were numerous warm days well above the average and I had to water the smaller plants that had just gone in the ground. Normally we would receive about 100mm for the month. The inland members gardens have been experiencing very dry conditions and the possibility of a very hot summer will see many plants needing the addition of moisture. Outback Queensland in particular is in the throes of a severe drought and the Hakeas from that region such as maconochieana, collina and ivoryi will be greatly stressed as well as being prone to damage from goats. Along the east coast from Gippsland to northern NSW there has been plenty of rain and gardens have been subject to very wet conditions. In Western Australia Jennifer Young has reported that good winter rains have transformed the northern sand plains into a blaze of flowering plants from Exmouth to Kalbarri. Our garden in Colac continues to thrive. -

All three species are known from the South West Botanical province of Western Australia and all have conservation priority. A new key to Lechenaultia is provided. Introduction Lechenaultia R.Br. is an attractive genus in the Goodeniaceae that is predominantly Western Australian with approximately 90% endemic to the state (Morrison 1992; Western Australian Herbarium 2001). -

More than a century passed before another key to the Australian genera appeared (Johnson & Briggs 1983), this time with 75 genera and 11 informal groups that were intended to be equivalent to tribes. In 2005 a new formal classification for the Myrtaceae (Wilsonet al. 2005) increased the number of tribes recognised in Australia to 151, but this paper did not include any keys. Approximately 85 Australian genera are now recognised, including 30 endemic to Western Australia. Ten tribes are represented in Western Australia and, since mid 2009, 54 genera have been listed for the State on FloraBase (Western Australian Herbarium 1998–). -

It was found that colour has been and continues to be poorly described, preventing any analysis of the biological diversity of colour to enable comparison across or between floras or species. Forthcoming work on more accurate colour description using the Natural Color System of Sweden is foreshadowed. Providing a simple explanation of Latin grammar, along with an in-depth vocabu- lary, this is an indispensable guide for systematic botanists worldwide. All relevant parts of speech are discussed, with accompanying examples as well as worked exercises for translating diagnoses and descriptions to and from Latin. Guidelines for forming specific epithets are also included. The authors cross-reference their grammar to Stearn’s Botanical Latin and to articles in the International Code of Nomenclat- ure for Algae, Fungi and Plants. Emma Short worked for 5 years at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK, on the Index Kewensis database and with R. K. Brummitt on Authors of Plant Names. She checked Latin for Australian Systematic Botany for 18 years, worked as a freelance translator, and has taught courses in Botanical Latin. Alex George is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, Murdoch University, Perth. He was a botanist with the Western Australian Herbarium for 21 years, then Editor of the Flora of Australia for 12 years. -
Studies on the Chemistry of Australia's Native Fauna and Flora
Studies on the chemistry of Australia's native flora and fauna My first involvement in natural products chemistry was during my Honours year in chemistry at UNSW in 1964 where, like so many other chemists before me, I set to work on my bag of sawdust obtained from some Australian tree to find out what organic compounds could be extracted from it. The species involved was Sophora tomentosa and under the supervision of Associate Professor Ron Eade I obtained some isoflavone and pterocarpin derivatives. That experience whetted my interest in the chemicals contained living systems and sparked an interest in why they were there. Sophora tomentosa is a member of the Leguminosae and it is only within this family that isoflavones had been found. The work described in this thesis has been carried out at the School of Chemistry, University of New South Wales over a period of, approximately, 25 years. During this time at the University I have been responsible for providing the routine mass specti'ometry service within the School of Chemistry, though the work described herein is not part of that work. GC/MS was initiated within the School in 1969. In 1970, as a postdoctoral fellow, I used the technique for the first time in the my work on insect chemistry. After a period of 5 years at Monash University I returned to UNSW in 1976 to run the routine mass spectrometry service. My involvement with insect chemistry continued and several years later I commenced work on essential oils chemistry. Like a lot of other people who spend their lives in doing chemical research, I got into essential oils research more or less by accident, though in my case this accident was once removed.
