Nuytsia 20: 309–318 (2010). Verticordia mitchelliana subsp. implexior A.S.George & M.D.Barrett and Verticordia setacea A.S.George are described and discussed. Verticordia setacea belongs with V. gracilis A.S.George in section Platandra, previously a monotypic section. Introduction The genus Verticordia DC. (Myrtaceae: tribe Chamelaucieae) is a charismatic group of shrubs found mainly in south-western Australia, with several species in adjacent arid regions and three in tropical Australia (George 1991; George & Pieroni 2002). Verticordia is currently defined solely on the possession of divided calyx lobes, but the limits between Verticordia and the related genera Homoranthus A.Cunn. ex Schauer, Chamelaucium Desf. and Darwinia Rudge are difficult to define conclusively, and other characteristics such as anther morphology suggest conflicting relationships (Bentham 1867; Craven & Jones 1991; George 1991). A recent analysis using a single chloroplast gene, with limited sampling of Verticordia taxa (Ma et al. 2002), suggests that Verticordia may be polyphyletic. -

Considerable inter- and intra-specific variation in both seed production and germinability was demonstrated for the majority of taxa. The seed to flower ratio, or “seed set”, ranged from 0% to 68% with an overall mean of 21% in 82 accessions representing seed from 48 populations of the 22 taxa. Percentage germination ranged from 7% to 100% with an average of 49% for 68 accessions. The precariously low annual reproductive capacity of some of the more restricted and critically endangered taxa threatens their survival and unexpected disturbance events may result in population decline or even localised extinction. Mitigation measures such as the reintroduction of plant material into new sites and the enhancement of existing populations through additional plantings may be warranted for many of Western Australia’s rare and threatened Verticordia. Two subspecies are recognized: B. ramosissima subsp. ramosissima is widely distributed in coastal and inland localities from northern New South Wales through Victoria to South Australia and Tasmania;B. ramosissima subsp. prostrata (Hook, f.) G. W. Carr, comb, et stat. nov., occurs in southern coastal New South Wales, southern Victoria and northern and western Tasmania. Both taxa are described and illustrated, also a key to their identification is provided. Distribution of the taxa is mapped. Geographical variation, ecology and biology are discussed. INTRODUCTION Baeckea ramosissima (as currently recognized by Australian botanists) is a widespread and very distinct species occurring in south eastern Australia. The eastern Australian species most closely allied to it are B. crassifolia Lindl. and B. ericaea F. Muell. My observations on its Victorian populations have supported the view of Willis (1973) that it is “A polymorphic assemblage, some populations of which may merit taxonomic distinction.” The descriptions by Black (1952), Curtis (1956) and Beadle et al. -

[email protected] Abstract New morphological observations of Conothamnus Lindl. are reported and the new section, Gongylocephalus Craven, is described to accommodate Trichobasis Turcz. nom. illeg. which has been included in Conothamnus without taxonomic recognition until now. Introduction Conothamnus Lindl. was established by Lindley in 1839, based upon the single species C. trinervis Lindl. In 1852 Turczaninow described the genus Trichobasis Turcz. with T. aurea Turcz. its sole species. The name T. aurea is typified by the KW set of the collec- tion Drummond 5th coll. 147. Turczaninow’s generic name is illegitimate, being a later homonym of Trichobasis Léveillé, published in 1849. Bentham (1867) in effect trans- ferred Trichobasis aurea to the previously monotypic Conothamnus when he described C. divaricatus Benth. the name of which is typified by the K set of the type collection of T. aurea. In 1904 Diels added a third species to Conothamnus, C. neglectus Diels. All three species are restricted to the southwest of Western Australia. Conothamnus, including Trichobasis, has been treated as one of the several genera related to Melaleuca L., from which it has been distinguished by previous authors (e.g. Bentham 1867; Johnson & Briggs 1983; Rye 1987) by possession of a single ovule in each locule compared to several ovules per locule in Melaleuca. -

A revision of south-western Australian species of Micromyrtus (Myrtaceae) with five antisepalous ribs on the hypanthium. Nuytsia 15(1): 101–122 (2002). Among the species currently included in Micromyrtus Benth., two main categories are distinguished here on the basis of hypanthium ribbing, one characterised by having antipetalous ribs and usually also antisepalous ones, the other by having antisepalous ribs but no antipetalous ones. Most species belong to the latter category, including the lectotype selected here for the genus, Micromyrtus drummondii Benth. nom. superfl. [= M. obovata (Turcz.) J.W. Green]. A key is given to the 14 Western Australian members of this group, and the eight south-western species, including five new species, are revised. Micromyrtus erichsenii Hemsl. is reinstated and the new species M. monotaxis Rye, M. ninghanensis Rye, M. papillosa J.W. Green ex Rye, M. rogeri J.W. Green ex Rye and M. uniovula Rye are illustrated. Three of these new species have an ovule number of one, lower than any previously recorded for the genus, and four of them have conservation priority. Introduction Micromyrtus is an endemic Australian genus belonging to the Chamelaucium alliance (cf. Briggs & Johnson 1979) of the Myrtacaeae. No formal sections or other infrageneric groups have been named in Micromyrtus, although the genus was reduced to a section of Thryptomene Endl. -

Darwinia hortiorum (Myrtaceae: Chamelaucieae), a new species from the Darling Range, Western Australia. Nuytsia 20: 277–281 (2010). The distinctive, new, rare species Darwinia hortiorum is described, illustrated and discussed. Uniquely in the genus it has strongly curved- zygomorphic flowers with the sigmoid styles arranged so that they group towards the centre of the head-like inflorescences. Introduction Darwinia Rudge comprises c. 90 species, mostly from the south-west of Western Australia with c. 15 species in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Phylogenetic analyses (M. Barrett, unpublished) have shown that the genus is polyphyletic, with distinct eastern and western Australian clades. Along with the related genera Actinodium Schauer, Chamelaucium Desf., Homoranthus A.Cunn. ex Schauer and Pileanthus Labill., the Darwinia clades are nested in a paraphyletic Verticordia DC. Many undescribed species of Darwinia are known in Western Australia, and these are being progressively described (Rye 1983; Marchant & Keighery 1980; Marchant 1984; Keighery & Marchant 2002; Keighery 2009). A significant number of taxa in the genus are narrowly endemic or rare and are of high conservation significance. Although taxonomic reassignment of the Western Australian species of Darwinia may be required in the future, resolving the status of these undescribed species and describing them under their current genus helps provide information for conservation assessments and survey. -

Sincethen Newbey (1979) undertook a study of the vegetationof the central southcoastal region and someof his results havebeen incorporated in this paper.
