Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners=s GI King=s Bishop S. upsetter Capo Bastone (Street Boss) will train up to the Nov. 2 GI Breeders= Cup Turf Sprint, it was announced Monday. AHistorically, Capo Bastone has put forth his most brilliant performances with significant spacing between his races, which is the reason we=ve opted not to provide the colt with a traditional prep race between the [Aug. 28] King=s Bishop and the Breeders= Cup,@ Eclipse=s President Aron Wellman said in a release. AAs for determining which Breeders= Cup race to target, [trainer] Todd [Pletcher] and I put a lot of thought into it, as his versatility lends itself to Capo Bastone NYRA/Coglianese various options. When we honed in on the race we thought would give Capo the best chance to win, the Turf Sprint made the most sense, despite the unconventional nature of running a horse in a Championship race over a surface he has never competed on previously.@ While Capo Bastone has never run on grass, he earned the J “TDN Rising Star” J for a fast-closing debut score on the Del Mar Polytrack last August while in the care of John Sadler. ACapo Bastone has breezed very well on the turf and the downhill layout of the hillside turf course at Santa Anita is absolutely a made-to-order design for his late-running style,@ Wellman added. AAlthough it's technically a 6 1/2-furlong race, due to its= configuration, the course plays much closer to a mile and come-from-behind elongated sprinters tend to be extremely effective in this race.@ Joel Rosario, whose lone ride on Capo Bastone was a third in last year=s GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile, has committed to ride the sophomore in the Turf Sprint. Irad Ortiz, Jr. was aboard for the King=s Bishop. AIrad (Ortiz) rode a flawless race in the King's Bishop. There is no disputing that and we are grateful for the spectacular ride he put up that day. However, the downhill turf course at Santa Anita is the most unique configuration of any race in America. Familiarity with the nuance of the circuit is absolutely critical for a jockey. Timing as to how to maneuver and when is emphasized beyond articulation. So, for this race, we thought it important to have a jockey who had plenty of prior big race experience over the course and Joel fit the bill.@ Capo Bastone had his first published work since the King=s Bishop Saturday, breezing four furlongs in company with MGISW stablemate Verrazano (More Than Ready) in :49.11. Among those getting a tightener ahead of the Oct. 5 GI Champagne S. was J “TDN Rising Star” J Havana (Dunkirk), who graduated going 5 1/2 furlongs at Saratoga Aug. 23. A $575,000 Barretts March purchase for John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, the grey covered five furlongs in 1:00.85, the fastest of 17 moves at the distance yesterday. AHe=s trained very well since his maiden win and he breezed well today, so we=re looking forward to the Champagne,@ said Havana NYRA/Coglianese Pletcher. AHe=s always been a very good work horse, including when he worked :9 3/5 [the fastest 1/8th] at Barretts [this year]. But, he hasn=t run since he won his maiden race on Aug. 23 and we=re stretching him out to a mile in a Grade I race. While we don=t want to overdo it, at the same time we want to make sure we do enough with him to have him ready to run a good race at a mile against what looks like some of the best 2-year-olds around.@ Also campaigned by the Coolmore team, Corfu (Malibu Moon) was given a sharpener before an intended start in Sunday=s GII Futurity S. The colt worked four panels in :48.63, the eighth- fastest of 55 at the distance Monday. AIt was very standard for him, which is generally a good breeze,@ said Pletcher. AHe was in hand, against the bridle and I was very happy with him.@ As for his lackluster effort in the Hopeful, Pletcher added, AIt seems like he bounced out of the Hopeful in good order, and hopefully, we can put that race on a bad racetrack behind us and get back to the way he ran in his first two starts.@ Heading the ladies was J “TDN Rising Star” J Sweet Whiskey (Old Fashioned), who is expected to make her next start in Sunday=s GII Matron S.
