The second oldest--and most prestigious--awards in the field, they quickly were nicknamed the Hugos (officially since 1958), in honor of Hugo Gernsback (1884 -1967), founder of Amazing Stories, the first professional magazine devoted entirely to science fiction. No awards were given in 1954 at the World Science Fiction Con in San Francisco, but they were restored in 1955 at the Clevention (in Cleveland) and included six categories: novel, novelette, short story, magazine, artist, and fan magazine.

Embargoed until 12:01 a.m., 5 September 2004 BOSTON - Noreascon Four is delighted to announce the winners in 13 categories for the prestigious 2004 Hugo Awards for the best science fiction or fantasy stories of2003, and for related areas in fandom, art and dramatic presentation. The Hugo Awards were named for Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the pioneer magazine Amazing Stories. The award categories have changed over time, as the field of science fiction has grown and evolved. This year's honors mark the 50t11 time the Hugo Awards have been granted for exemplary work. Both the John W. Campbell Award for New Writers and the Special Noreascon Four Committee Award winners were announced as part of the Hugo Ceremony. The Special Committee Award honors contributions to the field of science fiction and fantasy which are not included in the currently granted Hugo Awards, but which are deemed exemplary and worthy of special recognition. This award was given to Erwin "Filthy Pierre" Strauss for his many, largely unrecognized gifts of his time, energy, and boundless enthusiasm to fandom. This year's voting included a larger than average number of late-joining supporting members who wished to vote but not attend the World Science Fiction Convention. Because of the mixed process of balloting (mail-in and online both), a statistically larger than average percentage of unsigned ballots or ballots without correct PIN information were rejected. Zawia DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND 2018 Abstract Works of Epic Fantasy often have the reputation of being formulaic, conservative works that simply replicate the same tired story lines and characters over and over. This assumption prevents Epic Fantasy works from achieving wide critical acceptance resulting in an under-analyzed and under-appreciated genre of literature. While some early works do follow the same narrative path as J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Epic Fantasy has long challenged and reworked these narratives and character tropes. That many works of Epic Fantasy choose replicate the patriarchal structures found in our world is disappointing, but it is not an inherent feature of the genre.
