Arpana's introduction to paintings cam via sculpture after her tutelage under B.K. Gura. In the main, however, she is a self taught artist. She had a scholarship for advanced course in painting in St. Martius College of Art London 1979 but chose to return after a month as she missed her home & India. Her earliest exhibited paintings of 1974, of heavy muscular and rogynous women, are in a sombre palette. From the outset, she located her figures in the Punjabi milieu adopted by Amrita Sher Gil of women with their veils and thick khadi salwar-kameez texture on which the "Phulkaries" of Punjab could be embroidered. However Sher Gil's havelis and open spaces become congestive city pavements darkened corners, and Sher-Girl's melancholic figures of the "other" Indian appropriated by Arpana Caur as the tragic self. The relative isolation of the small urban family and the complexity of Arpana's own situation , of a fraught childhood with separated parents is seen in early paintings of her mother, her grandfather, and herself of the family selectively severed and then rejoined.

New York, NY, July 25, 2019 (Updated August 22, 2019) – DAG, the leading gallery dedicated to Modern Indian art, will present a major retrospective of Indian artist Madhvi Parekh, spanning five decades of the artist’s practice and bringing together over 65 of her works for the first time. Opening September 13, The Curious Seeker marks the debut of the artist’s work in the United States and follows the exhibition’s presentation at DAG’s spaces in Delhi and Mumbai.     Times Art Fest Online Auction presented by Saffronart achieves INR 1.15 crores, 92% lots sold Mumbai, 27 January 2021: The Times Art Fest Online Auction conducted on Saffronart’s online platform ​ StoryLTD concluded last night, achieving a total sale value of INR 1.15 crores (USD 160,153), with 92% lots sold. Featuring works by artists from Gujarat and across India, the 24-hour online auction offered a total of 48 lots. The sale saw over 370 participants, with 130 written bids submitted prior to the auction. There was enthusiastic participation across India, especially from Gujarat, as well as internationally, with bids coming from cities ranging from Kampala, Osaka, Palo Alto, London, Miami, Toronto and Singapore. In Gujarat, bidders were primarily based in Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Gandhidham. The sale was led by Ram Kumar’s untitled landscape from 1999 (lot 14), which sold for INR 21.9 lakhs (USD 30,389). Among the top highlights was an untitled painting from 2015 by Thota Vaikuntam (lot 23) which sold for INR 20 lakhs (USD 27,778) and Manu Parekh’s vibrant Flower Sutra of Bhadrakali, 2019 ​ ​ which sold for INR 10.6 lakhs (USD 14,728). An untitled work by Jeram Patel (lot 1) and Jyoti Bhatt’s Man ​ Mor Bani Thangaat Kare, 2020 (lot 3), crossed their pre-sale estimates, selling for INR 6.6 lakhs (USD ​ 9,208) and INR 6.1 lakhs (USD 8,528) respectively. All works in this series are priced between Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 20 lakh. When we launched the Silver Series in May 2020 as our attempt to stay engaged with art-lovers no longer able to visit our galleries, we were unsure of the response. But the feedback we received was heartening, and it was backed by commensurate sales to prove that the art-loving fraternity supported the initiative and gave it a resounding thumbs-up. The Silver Series was modest in its ambition in terms of prices (between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 5 lakh) and its fourth edition will follow immediately after the first Gold Series sale. We have other plans in store that I will share with you as they develop. Meanwhile, the DAG Bespoke series for customised audiences has also been launched, which—as the name suggests—remains exclusive and, therefore, intended only for a small group or body of people, many of who may be first-time art buyers. While price is an important indicator, and separator, between the Silver and Gold sales series, I must point out that it is not the only differentiator.
