Simmonds MBA, Keller Graduate School of Management, 2013 BS, DeVry University, 2012 Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Public Health Walden University May 2019 Abstract Adolescent pregnancy and the sexual behaviors of adolescents continue to be robust public health and social problems in Caribbean countries such as Jamaica. Numerous researchers have conducted studies on the impact of sex education on sexual behaviors and pregnancy patterns among adolescents with mixed results (i.e., a lack of knowledge) especially in rural communities. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the impact of school- or home-based sex education on sexual behavior and pregnancy patterns of adolescents aged 15–19 years in the rural community of St. Thomas, Jamaica. The parental expansion of the theory of planned behavior and cognitive behavior theory constituted the theoretical foundation for this quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study. Secondary data from the 2008 Jamaica Reproductive Health Survey (N = 8,200) were analyzed. Descriptive statistics, chi-square, and Cramer’s V were computed to determine the relationship and strength between the independent variables (school- and home-based sex education) and the dependent variables (pregnancy and sexual behaviors of adolescents). The results indicate a weak negative inverse relationship that was not statistically significant between sex education in school and sex education at home on adolescent pregnancy. There is a weak positive relationship between sex education in school on condom use and a positive measure of association between sex education at home on condom use. This study may be significant to local community health departments seeking inventive techniques for improving and enhancing existing programs. The results of this study also contribute new data on the impact of sex education on adolescent pregnancy and the sexual behavior of adolescents. A cross-sectional survey was conducted. Data were collected using a validated, self-administered, and standardized questionnaire on knowledge regarding risks for HIV and AIDS. Three hundred and eighty-six students (96.5%) had good knowledge about HIV and AIDS, although some participants had misconceptions about the modes of HIV infection transmission. There were no significant gender differences for HIV and AIDS knowledge among the participants (χ2 = 3.05; P = 0.08). In general we concluded that JSU undergraduate students had adequate knowledge about HIV transmission modes and AIDS, although some participants had misconceptions about the routes of HIV infection transmission. Hence, this study calls for strengthening HIV and AIDS awareness education among undergraduate students.

Talking Points On October 22, 1997 The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) released a review of 68 studies on sexuality and sexual health education in a variety of countries, including the United states, France, Mexico, and others. The review, the most comprehensive and curreni in the sexual health field, confirms what we have always known: sexuality education for young people promotes safer sexual practices and behaviors, and does not increase sexual activity in young people. The study found that responsible and safe sexual behaviors can be learned, and that while many education programs can provide information that increases students' level of knowledge, only "high-quality education" impacts behavior. "High quality education:" . uses focused curricula and is clear in its statements abtrut goals, the risks of unprotected sexual activities, and how to avoid risky behavior; . incorporates learning activities that address the influehces of society and the media on sexual behavior; o teaches communication and negotiation skills; . encourages open communication; and, . is grounded in theories that emphasize the social nature of learning. TAI-KING POINTS . This report confirms what Planned Parenthood has known through years of experience and from previous research: that balanced programs - those discussing both abstinence and contraception, including condoms - can reduce risky sexual behavior. Taking these accounts as a starting point, this paper uses the 2011 Uganda AIDS Indicator Survey (UAIS) data to explore the factors related to sexual behaviour and risk of STI and HIV infection among youths in Uganda. A total of 2,491 males and female young persons were selected for this study. A complementary log-log regression model was used to examine the association between women’s risky sexual behaviour and having an STI, HIV, and any STI including HIV. Female youths were more likely to contract an STI and HIV compared to their male counterparts (OR=2.1; 95% CI=1.2-3.6). The risk of contracting STIs was higher in Western Region of Uganda compared to Central region (OR=1.4; 95% CI=1.0-1.9). At the same time youths in Eastern Uganda had the least odds (OR=0.63) of contracting STIs. Furthermore, youth with multiple sex 1 partners were more likely to contract STIs including HIV compared to those who had a single partner.

If these persons do not modify their behavior to safer lifestyles, they may increase the spread of HIV infection. Aims: This study aims to identify the behavior of HIV‑positive MSM in comparison to their prediagnostic behaviors. Settings and Design: We conducted a cross‑sectional study involving antiretroviral clinic (ARV) in Khon Kaen hospital to explore the sexual behaviors of HIV‑positive MSM after the diagnosis of HIV infection. Subjects and Methods: HIV‑positive MSM aged ≥18 years were asked to enroll in the study. The questionnaire was administered to 114 MSM at least 3 months after HIV diagnosis. Statistical Analysis Used: Descriptive statistics was used including means, frequencies, and percentage. Results: Forty percent of HIV‑positive MSM had not have sex with a man during the 12 months. Nineteen participants reported unprotected sex, 4.31% and 12.28% reported engaging in unprotected anal and oral intercourse, respectively.

The data used are a nationally representative sample from the Botswana AIDS Impact Survey conducted in 2004. An un-weighted sample of 2215 women aged 15-49, who have had sexual intercourse was considered for analysis. Both bivariate and multivariate analyses are used to gain insights into the potential linkages between economic status, education and risky sexual behavior. The bivariate analysis shows that there is a significant relationship between dependent variable (number of sexual partners) and economic status.

Safer sex behaviors (monogamy, sexual abstinence, correct and consistent condom usage) are important for prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS among college students. The purpose of this article was to review studies addressing determinants of safer sex behaviors among college students. In order to collect materials for this study a search of seven databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, ERIC, Academic Search Premier, Scopus, Web of Science, Social Sciences Citation Index) was conducted for the time period 1990-2008. A total of 12 studies for determinants of safer sex behaviors were extracted. Alcohol usage, religiosity, barriers to condom use and perceived social norms were some of the determinants of safer sex behaviors. Recommendations for developing safer sex interventions in college students are presented. Key words: Safer sex, college students, determinants, monogamy. Introduction Safer sex is important for protection against STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) including HIV/AIDS (Human Immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). Consistent and correct condom usage along with a monogamous relationship are two important aspects for STD and HIV/AIDS prevention. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has grown to alarming proportions. Of the 281,421 persons getting a diagnosis of HIV infection during 1996-2005, 45% had a diagnosis of AIDS, 3 years after their HIV diagnosis [1]. The demographic trends from 1981- 2004 have shown that these cases are more in males as compared to females (71.3% vs. 28.7%), more in the age-group 30-44 years, (50.8%), highest in black, non-hispanics (51%), and more because of male to male sexual contact (43.5%) and heterosexual contact (34.0%)[2].

Martin Susquehanna University PERSONALITY AND SEXUAL EXPERIENCES 2 Abstract Engagement in risky sexual behaviors poses health risks for the individuals who engage in them, as well as society. Prior research has found relationships between the Big-Five Personality Traits and risky sexual behaviors. With this research in mind, this study investigated the relationships between the Big-Five Personality Traits, risky sexual behaviors, and pornography consumption. An online survey was complete by undergrad students aging 18 to 23, who were recruited from a small liberal arts university.
