Introduction

Wild India in Style was a very successful tour with 163 different species of and good sightings of various different mammals including the big cats: Royal Bengal Tiger and Leopard. The tour started from Delhi. Half of the group went to Sultanpur Sanctuary, where we saw some interesting birds, including Great Egret, Intermediate Egret, Gadwall, Eurasian Teal, Ibis and a special sighting of Eastern Imperial Eagle. Meanwhile the others had a great time exploring old Delhi by rickshaw. In Kanha, we saw a Tigress with three cubs on our first drive and then had excellent views of another Tigress the following morning. We also saw two Wild Dogs, great birds, and one fortunate group member enjoyed a special sighting of Indian Crested Porcupine, while night walks turned up 16 species of Amphibians.

As well as the wildlife, another highlight was visiting Bhoorsingh English-medium Preschool at Mukki Gate, which is a forest department initiative and supported by Singhinava Jungle Lodge. Moving on to Bandhavgharh, we saw two individual Tigers, one of which, a Tigress, was barely five metres from the road. We also saw two Leopards on different drives, and half the group also had two different sightings of Sloth Bear. The final part of the main tour was in Agra, with an early morning visit to the Taj Mahal. All in all, it was a very enjoyable and memorable trip.

Day 1 Friday 1st November

In flight to India The tour started with an overnight flight from the UK to India.

Day 2 Saturday 2nd November

Delhi - Sultanpur The flight landed on time at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, where Yusuf and Chinmay met the group. We then had a 10-minute drive to our hotel, the Pullman. Everybody went to freshen up and then we met again at 1pm to go to Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary.

After an hour-and-a-half drive we reached Sultanpur and saw lots of good birds including egrets, herons, Painted Stork, Glossy and Black-headed Ibises, Knob-billed (also known as Comb) Duck and Common Pochard. Our raptor sightings included Eastern Imperial Eagle and Western (Eurasian) Marsh Harrier. Meanwhile our other group members went out with cultural guide to explore Delhi. They had a memorable experience exploring old Delhi on a rickshaw. They also visited Jama Masjid.

Back at the hotel we had a briefing about next day’s programme.

Day 3 Sunday 3rd November

Delhi – Early morning Flight to Nagpur We left the hotel about 3.30am for the airport to catch our flight to Nagpur. After the security check we boarded the aircraft, but the flight was delayed from Delhi for about 30 minutes. We reached Nagpur at around 8am. Afterwards we started our six-hour journey to Kanha National Park. We reached the lodge at around 2.30pm, we had a quick lunch and rushed to the park gate for our first game drive. We had three vehicles and were accompanied by three lodge Naturalists. We were given some introductory information about about Kanha National Park. We saw some interesting birds and, since we entered the park a little late, the prime focus was to lookout for Tigers. Soon we got lucky and saw a tigress with three cubs near a waterhole. This streak of tigers was at a distance on the edge of the grassland, but it was amazing to see the cubs playing with each other.

Back at the lodge we did the checklist followed by the dinner.

Day 4 Monday 4th November

Kanha National Park We all woke up early today to set out for our morning safari. After some refreshments, we drove to the park; today we were going to the Kanha Zone. It was magical to see Kanha in the morning; it was a bit misty and seeing Swamp Deer in the grassland was truly amazing. We saw a quite a few birds on the way like Great Egret, Intermediate Egret, Black Stork, Cotton Pigmy Goose and Gadwall, to name a few. While driving we heard a few distress calls of Spotted Deer at a distance and also saw huge congregation of Spotted Deer in the meadow. Soon the calls stopped, and we moved on.

We reached Kanha meadows in about an hour, as we were waiting, we heard a few calls from Sheller’s Hide area. As we reached the spot, we saw a few vehicles already lined up and soon our patience was rewarded by excellent sighting of the tigress in the meadow. She was walking elegantly towards our vehicle and crossed the track in front of us. Everyone was thrilled to see the tigress up close; it was a perfect gift for Kay as it was her birthday today.

Our afternoon safari was not so rewarding. We were in the Mukki Zone; we didn’t see any signs of the big cats, although we did see some good birds.

Back at the lodge we met later for the checklist and drinks. We also had a cake-cutting ceremony for Kay, followed by dinner.

Day 5 Tuesday 5th November

Kanha National Park The morning was a bit cool. We saw quite a few interesting birds including Eurasian Teal, egrets, Common Moorhen, Oriental Turtle Doves and Alexandrine Parakeets, to name a few. We also saw quite a few mammals including Gaur, Sambar, Swamp Deer and Jackal.

Our afternoon drive was similar but included sightings of Indian and White-rumped Vultures. We also heard a Tiger growling but didn’t see the striped cat. On the way back to the gate Yusuf, with Roger. Jane, Collin and Sue, had a special sighting of Spot-bellied Eagle-Owl.

In the evening we met for the checklist which was followed by dinner.

Day 6 Wednesday 6th November

Kanha National Park Our last drive in Kanha National Park so we decided to check some new routes of the jungle. While driving through the Sal forest we saw a few Tiger tracks, initially in the beginning of the drive. One of the group had an exclusive sighting of three Indian Crested Porcupines which made last game dive in the park very special, and while coming back from the park we saw an Indian Rock Python in the of monsoon stream of the park.

Back in the lodge we had lunch and we started our five-hour journey to Bandhavgharh National Park.

In the evening we enjoyed a delicious dinner.

Day 7 Thursday 7th November

Bandhavgharh National Park

The morning we gathered in the guest area for tea, coffee and porridge before leaving for our game drive. The morning was quite pleasant, and we all appreciated the beauty of Bandhavgharh. We saw a few Tiger and Sloth Bear tracks, and later, one of the group spotted a Sloth Bear. For our afternoon safari we went to the Maghdhi Zone. As soon as we entered the park, we were welcomed by some decent Tiger tracks which were relatively fresh. After driving a bit more, we heard frantic distress calls of Spotted Deer. Soon we spotted a female Leopard in the thickets; she crossed the road and we all got to see her dashing across the road. Later we got lucky with Sloth Bear sighting; Yusuf spotted the bear while driving across a junction. Some of the group were lucky to see the bear again in the afternoon.

Once back at the hotel, we called it a night after checklist and dinner.

Day 8 Friday 8th November

Bandhavgarh National Park The morning we again gathered in the guest area for tea, coffee and porridge before leaving for our game drive. Today we were focussed on looking out for Tigers. We saw a few tracks and even heard growling; meanwhile, some of the group in another jeep saw a big Tiger, on another route. Later, we came across very fresh tracks over other vehicle tracks and, after scanning the whole area filled with bamboo thickets, our driver spotted the tigress lying down hardly five metres from the tracks! It was successful morning for us all.

The afternoon was bit quieter, but a little later, our guests in one of the vehicles saw a Leopard peeping out from behind some rocks and later, it ran across. Meanwhile, on the other route we heard a few distress calls and waited for quite a bit but had no luck with the sighting.

In the evening we did the checklist, and everyone celebrated the day with drinks.

Day 9 Saturday 9th November

Bandhavgarh National Park Today was our last drive in Bandhavgarh; we were exploring a new area, Khitauli. As soon as we entered, we saw fresh tracks of streak of Tigers further ahead, plus some tracks of Leopard as well. We explored quite a bit to find more evidence of the big cats but had no luck with the sightings. However, we saw some interesting birds like Common Kingfisher, Woolly-necked Stork and Greenshank, to name a few. At the breakfast point we had great fun with some games introduced by some of the group members.

After lunch at the lodge we had enough time to clean, change and pack our bags. At around 4pm we left the lodge with a packed dinner, to catch our overnight train to Agra. We reached Katni station in two hours. Everyone was excited by their first experience on the Indian railways.

Day 10 Sunday 10th November

Agra The train arrived on time at Agra Cantt railway station, and our ground-handling staff were waiting for us with porters. We reached our hotel at around 9am, and straight away went to have breakfast. After breakfast rooms were allotted and around 11 am, we visited the Baby Taj with our cultural guide. Behind the Baby Taj we saw a few interesting birds like egrets, Egyptian Vultures, Brown-headed Gulls, Greenshank, Green Sandpiper and Black Kites. After the Baby Taj, everyone decided to skip the lunch and we then visited the Agra Fort.

We all then returned to the hotel, where we briefed the guests about next day’s programme. Everyone was looking forward for some good rest.
