The aircraft used for in-country flights, such as the Cessna Caravan or Dehavilland Twin Otter, are often built for STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) conditions prevailing in many national parks and rural areas. The Kidepo Valley National Park (KVNP) covers an area of 1,442 square kilometers in the northern border triangle between South Sudan and Kenya and has consistently been voted one of the best in Africa due to its wild and magical savannah type landscapes. The altitude within the area ranges from 914 meters to 2,750 meters above sea level, with Mount Morungole as its highest point. Also, the park shares its name with the Kidepo and Narus valleys that reach across the border into South Sudan and feature a breathtaking diversity of wildlife, including the greater/lesser kudu and eland. The following optional activities at cost are available for the Kidepo Valley National Park. Please see the section Services & Safari Activities Included for optional activities included in the price for this itinerary. Optional Activity - Karamojong Manyatta: The Karamojong is a tribe of warrior pastoralists who live in the northeastern corner of Uganda bordering South Sudan and Kenya. A visit to the Karamojong village, better known as Manyatta, located near Kidepo Valley National Park is a once in a lifetime experience as it allows you to observe and participate in the ancient cultures and traditions of the Karamajong up close. Optional Activity - Ik Mountain Tribe: After an early breakfast, you depart on a once in a lifetime visit to the mountain region of the IK tribe. The Ik are hunter/gatherers and live high in the Morungole Mountains on the border with Kenya and number only about 10,000. A day excursion to their mountain villages presents you with the opportunity of rare cultural insights, complemented by stunning mountain scenery. Climbing to the mountain villages on steep mountain tracks, however, means you have to be physically fit for this adventure as the main trail is 8 kilometers long (16 kilometers round trip) and can at times be quite a demanding climb. 5 Star Accommodation Options Apoka Lodge Day 3 - Kidepo Valley National Park You also have the opportunity to see elephants, lions and giraffes, and the largest group of buffalos in Africa, counting more than 2,000 animals. In addition, a game drive into the northern sector of the park offers the opportunity to visit the hot springs and is the only place in Uganda that features ostriches. The park also has an impressive variety of birds with 475 species identified to date, including 56 species of birds of prey. The wild frontier region of Karamoja also offers cultural experiences not found anywhere else in Uganda, such as a visit to a Karamajong ‘Manyatta’ or the exploration of the unique cultural heritage of the Ik people, complemented by stunning mountain scenery. 5 Star Accommodation Options Apoka Lodge Day 4 - Kidepo Valley NP to Murchison Falls National Park Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP) is situated at the northern end of the Great Rift Valley and was one of the first national parks established in 1952. With a size of 3,900 square kilometers, MFNP is also the largest park in Uganda, featuring extraordinary biodiversity and landscapes ranging from savannahs, riverine wet- lands as defined by the river Nile and tropical forests. The park itself is part of the even larger Murchison Falls Protected Area that covers more than 5,000 square kilometers and includes the Karuma Falls and the Bugungu Wildlife Refuge. One of the most important attractions within the park is the Nile Delta wetlands system that formed when the river reached the northern shores of Lake Albert. Its primary attraction, how- ever, remains the famous Murchison Falls, whose massive 43-meter falls of boiling water is forced through a 7-meter wide gap before crashing into the lightly wooded savannah below. Various lodges in the park offer daily boat trips along the Nile with the opportunity to see Murchison Falls up close or venture into the Nile Delta on the edge of Lake Albert, with the chance to see a spectacular variety of wildlife such as elephants, hippos, crocodiles and an impressive variety of tropical birds such as the rare and elusive shoebill stork.
