  • Friendly Societies in East Yorkshire
Bands and Banners George Tutill - Banner Maker George Tutill was born in the market town of Howden in the East Riding in 1817. George was the only child of Thomas Tutill, who was a miller, and Elizabeth. By the time George was twenty one he had moved to Hull and in June 1838 he married Emma Fairfield. He was known as an artist and exhibited a number of landscape paintings in London between 1846 and 1858. It was, however, as an entrepreneur of banners and regalia making that Tutill made his reputation and fortune. He moved to premises in City Road, London, and many societies went to Tutill’s for their emblems, regalia and banners, such as Friendly Societies, Trade Unions, Freemasons and Sunday Schools. George Tutill was active in the friendly society ‘The Ancient Order of Foresters’ from the 1840’s. Front cover of the 1895 Tutill catalogue Tutill advertisement George Tutill produced the banners from raw silk that was woven to the required size on a purpose built jacquard loom. The silk was then painted in oils on both front and back. Next, they were highly embellished with golden scrollwork with ornate lettering on streamers, and the central painted image, would be supplemented by inset cameos. The purchase of a banner was an extravagance entered into as soon as a society’s funds and membership allowed. With dimensions of up to 12 feet by 11 feet a Tutill banner could require eight men to carry it; two to carry each of the vertical poles and four more to hold the The studio of George Tutill at City Road, Oddfellows sash and badge made by George Tutill.

The Value of Water Level Management TRANSPORTATION NETWORK ©iStockphoto.com LeadingLights ©iStockphoto.com ada INTRODUCTION Foreword from the Chairman This report emphasises the importance of water level management in ensuring the security of the transportation network in England and Wales. Furthermore, it highlights the interconnectivity of the transportation network, and the important role Internal Drainage Boards (IDBs) play in continuing to keep the country, and the economy, moving. “…the interconnected nature of its networks...lends resilience to the sector. However, the “ “ scale and exposed nature of the network leaves it vulnerable to some significant risk.” 2012 Sector Resilience Plan for Critical Infrastructure, Cabinet Office Britain currently faces a number of stresses: a growing population, climate change and a large budgetary deficit. To meet these challenges we need an economically competitive Britain. For any society this must start with ensuring that fundamental building blocks for growth and prosperity are in place. Transport is one of those crucial building blocks. As a nation we are renewing and improving our transportation networks; Crossrail is currently being built underneath Central London; plans are in place for a new Forth crossing (Queensferry Crossing) and for HS2. But new projects are just part of the picture, at the same time we must do what we can to preserve and enhance our existing infrastructure. The flooding experienced across England in November 2012 is a timely reminder about the impact our weather and climate can have on our ability to move people and freight about our country. ADA and its members play their part in helping keep the country moving, regardless of the mode of transportation.

It was built between 1892 and 1894 because of the high number of shipwrecks that were occurring at Withernsea when vessels could not see the lights at either Spurn Head or Flamborough. It was not designed to be lived in, the tower has no dividing floors only the spiral staircase leading to the Service and Lamp Rooms at the top. The Lighthouse was decommissioned at the end of June 1976 and is now a museum of memorabilia about the RNLI Coastguards and local history. The museum also houses an exhibition on the life of actress Kay Kendall (1926-1959) who was a film star in the 1950s. She was born in the town and died of leukaemia. 5. Amphibians and reptiles Common toad Bufo bufo Key Sites: Saltfleetby - Theddlethorpe NNR (TF 470 910). Summary Status: • Wildlife and Countryside Act: Schedule 5, Section 9 (5). • Habitats Directive: not listed. • Berne Convention: not listed. • Red Data Book: not listed. • Breeding Status in the Humber: Breeding. • Widespread and common or abundant. Description The common toad Bufo bufo is a widespread amphibian found throughout Britain although this species is absent from Ireland. They are generally brown, grey or dirty green and have the ability to lighten or darken their skin depending on environmental conditions. Their skin is covered in warts which secrete a toxic substance when the toad is seriously threatened. Like most toad species the common toad has short stubby legs. It therefore moves in a series of short hops rather than the large leaps taken by the common frog (Beebee & Griffiths 2000). The common toad tends to avoid grazed pasture, improved grassland, arable fields, heathland and moorlands in favour of rough grassland, scrub and open woodland. Large permanent water bodies with a good cover of emergent and submerged vegetation are preferred. Unlike other British amphibian species, they are able to inhabit ponds, which support fish, due to the unpalatability of common toad tadpoles (Beebee & Griffiths 2000). Common toads feed primarily on ground dwelling arthropods such as ants (family Formicidae), beetles (order Coleoptera), spiders (order Araneae) and earwigs (order Dermaptera), although slower moving items such as earthworms (Class Oligochaeta), and gastropods such as slugs and snails are also taken (Gittins 1987 in Beebee & Griffiths 2000). Distribution within the Humber As in many kinds of species survey, the observed distribution of records will reflect differences in recording effort as well as the real distribution of a species.

  • The Universal Quixote: Appropriations of a Literary Icon
THE UNIVERSAL QUIXOTE: APPROPRIATIONS OF A LITERARY ICON A Dissertation by MARK DAVID MCGRAW Submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Chair of Committee, Eduardo Urbina Committee Members, Paul Christensen Juan Carlos Galdo Janet McCann Stephen Miller Head of Department, Steven Oberhelman August 2013 Major Subject: Hispanic Studies Copyright 2013 Mark David McGraw ABSTRACT First functioning as image based text and then as a widely illustrated book, the impact of the literary figure Don Quixote outgrew his textual limits to gain near- universal recognition as a cultural icon. Compared to the relatively small number of readers who have actually read both extensive volumes of Cervantes´ novel, an overwhelming percentage of people worldwide can identify an image of Don Quixote, especially if he is paired with his squire, Sancho Panza, and know something about the basic premise of the story. The problem that drives this paper is to determine how this Spanish 17th century literary character was able to gain near-univeral iconic recognizability. The methods used to research this phenomenon were to examine the character´s literary beginnings and iconization through translation and adaptation, film, textual and popular iconography, as well commercial, nationalist, revolutionary and institutional appropriations and determine what factors made him so useful for appropriation. The research concludes that the literary figure of Don Quixote has proven to be exceptionally receptive to readers´ appropriative requirements due to his paradoxical nature. The Quixote’s “cuerdo loco” or “wise fool” inherits paradoxy from Erasmus of Rotterdam’s In Praise of Folly.

  • La Duquesa Y Altisidora: Dos Enemigas De Dulcinea the Duchess and Altisidora: Two Enemies of Dulcinea
La duquesa y Altisidora: dos enemigas de Dulcinea The Duchess and Altisidora: Two Enemies of Dulcinea Amalia Iriarte Universidad de Los Andes COLOMBIA [email protected] [Hipogrifo, (issn: 2328-1308), 3.2, 2015, pp. 253-261] Recibido: 24-03-2015 / Aceptado: 03-05-2015 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.13035/H.2015.03.02.16 Resumen. Don Quijote, mundo real, mundo imaginario. Abstract. Don Quixote creates Dulcinea of El Toboso, the beloved of the knight-er- rant, out of his recollections of Aldonza Lorenzo.
