I. Mission

The Institute of Mental Health (IMH) is a centre of excellence for promotion and advocacy of better community mental health, through advancing science and disseminating knowledge in mental illness and mental health by intensive education, quality training, and rigorous research.

3 IV. Overview of Programmes Conducted by the IMH (January to June 2016)

Public Education

(1) Certificate Course in Mental Health (MHC13) The 13.5-hour Certificate Course in Mental Health (MHC) has been specifically designed to serve the needs of the society since October 2009. It provides training on common mental illnesses and skills in managing mental illnesses to professionals, health care professionals and related personnel who may come into contact with people with mental health problems or their carers in their daily practice by comprehensive lectures, case discussions/ vignettes, and interactive workshops. In view of the overwhelming responses from the previous classes, the thirteenth course (MHC13) was conducted on 27 February 2016 and 5 March 2016, with 133 participants including health care professionals of the , government departments and non-government organisations.

4 (2) Management of Workplace Violence (MoV) Seminars cum Workshops In response to the invitation from the Open University of Hong Kong, three seminars and 10 workshops were conducted in January, March and May 2016 for nursing students of the university. The trainings aimed at equipping them with the basic knowledge in understanding and communicating with people who are emotional or potentially violent and identifying the risk factors and preventive measures of workplace violence. About 260 participants attended the captioned seminars and workshops.

(3) Educational Materials The publications of the IMH provide a good source of information on mental illness and self-help guide to the general public. The information is handy and easily accessible at the service units of CPH and online at the IMH website. To ensure the information is accurate and up-to-date, the PES has continuously been reviewing all educational materials and reprinting pamphlets with high demand. The materials updated from January to June 2016 are listed as follows:

Two new educational pamphlets were produced: • “Panic Disorder” “驚恐症” • “Phobic Disorder” “恐懼症”

Three educational pamphlets were reviewed and updated: • “Psychosis” “思覺失調” • “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” “創傷後遺症”* • “Learning Disability and Mental Health” ”智力障礙與精神健康”* * Pamphlet of the Royal College of Psychiatrists

5 In view of the high demand, an education pamphlet on “Bipolar Affective Disorder” “不鬱 不躁” was reprinted. All of the above updated materials are available for free distribution in different service units and accessible on the IMH website.

6 (4) Health Column in Sing Tao Daily The PES continues to collaborate with Sing Tao Daily in publishing articles written by CPH colleagues to disseminate mental health information to the public. The articles are published under the health column“保健至專”inside the feature page of the newspaper.

CPH colleagues have contributed to this project by actively submitting their articles. Published articles are also shared with all CPH staff via email. The collection of articles has also been uploaded to the IMH website for public access.

(5) Health Column in Apple Daily The PES has been collaborating with Apple Daily in publishing articles written by CPH colleagues since October 2015. The column serves as an effective medium for mental health education. The articles are published under the health column “心藏筆露”inside the feature page of the newspaper every other Friday.

CPH colleagues have contributed to this project by actively submitting their articles. Published articles are shared with all CPH staff via email. The collection of articles has also been uploaded to the IMH website for public access.

Professional Training

(1) Nourishing Ourselves with Mindfulness – A One-Day Workshop A one-day experiential workshop on “Nourishing Ourselves with Mindfulness” was successfully held on 13 May 2016, with a total of 112 participants. The Professional Training Subcommittee (PTS) invited Dr. Helen Shuk-Wah MA, a registered clinical psychologist and an experienced trainer in mindfulness, to introduce the basic concepts of stress reactions, mind-body medicine and mindfulness to the participants in order to enhance the participants’ well-being through the application of mindfulness in their daily lives.

9 Psychiatric Nursing Education

(1) Enrolled Nurse Graduation Ceremony The Graduation Ceremony for Class 13 of the Enrolled Nurse (Psychiatric) Training Programme of the Hospital Authority was held on 29 January 2016. A total of 29 pupil nurses graduated.

10 Research

(1) Research Seminar Research seminars are part of the regular in-house training programme for medical staff. A research seminar entitled “Research Seminar: Part III candidate Research Protocol Presentation” was presented by Dr. Wilson LAU on 25 May 2016. A total of 34 medical staff attended the seminar.

(2) Research Studies As of June 2016, CPH has more than 30 on-going research projects. IMH is actively involved in the following research projects:  “A four-year prospective family study in patients suffering from first episode psychosis: A quest for intermediate phenotypes and aetiology of psychosis” – Data collection stage. As of June 2016, a total of 206 patients with first-episode psychosis and 99 healthy controls have been phenotyped and endophenotyped and 350 patients have been recruited for genotyping. An article entitled “Affective experience and motivated behavior in schizophrenia spectrum disorders: Evidence from clinical and nonclinical samples” has been published in Neuropsychology.  “Schizotypy traits or features in nonpsychotic first-degree relatives of patients with schizophrenia: Cluster analysis using the Chapman Psychosis Proneness Scales” – Data analysis and write-up stage.  “Searching for intermediate phenotypes for psychosis: a functional MRI study on neuroanatomical markers for psychosis and gene-brain mapping” – Data collection and data analysis stage. As of June 2016, a total of 80 patients with first-episode psychosis, 22 first-degree relatives and 60 healthy controls have been recruited for neurological tests. MRI brain scans have been conducted for 133 of them. Resting state MRI data has been analysed and a manuscript has been prepared for submission.  “Left prefrontal high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for the treatment of negative symptoms in schizophrenia: A double-blind, sham-controlled, randomised-controlled trial” – Preliminary stage. The recruitment of subjects will commence soon.

11 Patient and Carer Resource

(1) Patient Resource An educational talk entitled “戰勝抑鬱” was organised at the Mental Health Day Service Centre (Mindset) on 6 May 2016. Dr. Wilson Lau, Medical Officer of CPH, was invited as a speaker. A total of 42 participants including out-patients, day-patients and members of the public participated in the talk and positive feedbacks were received.

(2) Self-help and Advocacy The patient empowerment activity of artwork framing “書畫樂聚之裱畫小組” continued and gatherings were held on 20 January 2016, 9 March 2016 and 27 May 2016, with a total of four patients participated.

12 (3) Community Partnership The Jardine Matheson Group organised three community partnership activities under the “Health-in-Mind Programme”:  “Teen 使行動 Sports Day” was held on 20 February 2016 at Fung Kai No.1 Secondary School. Two patients participated in the event.

 “Cupcake 製作”, which was jointly organised with San Wui Commercial Society Secondary School, was held on 19 March 2016. A total of eight patients participated.

 “科學館半日遊” was held on 1 April 2016. A total of five patients participated.

13 (4) Volunteer Service

 “Volunteer Sharing Forum 2015” was held on 9 January 2016. A total of 69 volunteers participated in the forum.

 Two volunteer core trainings were held on 6 January 2016 and 17 June 2016 with 21 and 22 participants respectively. Two infection control trainings were organised on 20 February 2016 and 5 April 2016 with 28 and 16 participants respectively. All participants would provide volunteer service in CPH after training.

 The Annual New Year Programme “紅情共聚賀新春” co-organised with Red Cross was held on 20 February 2016. A total of 408 patients participated in the programme.

14  Under the “Doctor of Excellence Volunteer Programme”, 30 medical student volunteers were recruited and received volunteer training organised by the Day Hospital on 27 February 2016. Three educational talks were conducted by the volunteers:

(i) “運動知多點 健康在身邊” was held on 12 March 2016 with 20 patients participated. (ii) “血壓知多點 健康在身邊” was held on 2 April 2016 with 14 patients participated. (iii) “糖尿知多點 健康在身邊” was held on 16 April 2016 with 16 patients participated.

15 Hospital Archives & Gallery Exhibition

(1) Photo-stories of CPH 青山相一賞

The HAGES has organised an exhibition outside the CPH staff canteen entitled “青山相一賞” with images depicting historical moments and a brief introduction in every three months. The episode in February 2016 was entitled “Sports and Games Day”.

(2) Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences (HKMMS) 20th Anniversary Community Fun Fair The HAGES was invited by the HKMMS to be one of the collaborators of its 20th Anniversary Fun Fair on 16 and 17 April 2016. A game booth was run to promote mental health to the general public. Positive feedbacks were received from the participants.

16 (3) Capture a Beautiful Moment Photography Exhibition (一刻美撮 • 沙龍 攝影展)

A public photo exhibition entitled “Capture a Beautiful Moment Photography Exhibition (一 刻美撮 • 沙龍攝影展)” was held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre from 4 to 7 March 2016. This exhibition aimed at promoting public awareness and reducing stigmatisation towards mental illness. Positive and encouraging messages written by the public were received on our message board.

(4) Sharing Session on Art Facilitation An “Art Facilitation Sharing Session” was held at the Day Hospital on 9 March 2016 to enhance staff’s understanding on art facilitation and its application in mental health setting. A total of 12 staff participated.

17 (5) MTR Community Art Galleries Exhibition An exhibition of patients’ artworks was held at the concourse of Tuen Mun Station of the West Rail Line, MTR, in May 2016. The project aimed at enhancing public awareness in mental health and boosting the confidence and self-awareness of patients in recovery by exploring their talents through photography.

(6) Art Exhibition at HA Convention Six pieces of patient artwork were displayed at the Hospital Authority Convention on 3 and 4 May 2016. The exhibition aimed at promoting social inclusion through showcasing the artistic talents of psychiatric patients to fellow healthcare professionals.

18 V. Statistics of Educational Activities (Organised by the IMH and Invitations Received)

The summary of all educational activities conducted by the IMH from January to June 2016 is presented in Appendix I. The activities were categorised into two types. The first type refers to activities that were initiated and organised by the IMH and the other includes invitations from other organisations for conducting talks or training courses.

A total of 31 activities were conducted, among which 24 were organised by the IMH. A total projected net income of $342,354 was earned from the activities with 1558 overall attendances. The breakdown of the activities by topics, target groups and geographical locations of the participants can be found in Appendix I.

Activities Organised by the IMH

A substantial proportion of the activities organised by the IMH during the reporting period focused on topics related to general adult , which accounted for 88% of the activities held. The activities organised by the IMH mainly targeted at professional carers and patients. A projected net income of $223,099 was generated from the activities.

Invitations from Other Organisations

Among the seven invitations that were received from external organisations, including government departments, non-government organisations (NGO) and educational institutions, most requested for delivering training courses targeted at professional carers and the public. The projected net income was $119,255.

Loan Record of Mental Health Educational Products

Six applications from NGO / educational institution for borrowing our educational exhibition boards / obtaining pamphlets or quoting / copying our publications, and linking up the IMH website were received and approved.
