We urge you to please keep this booklet handy as it will have all the information required for the year ahead. There are certain requirements that are implemented this year to encourage additional commitment as we strive to support and encourage every individual sailor to be the best that they can be. Term Dates, training sessions and Squad Training Camps are all set in advance for this year and can be found in this booklet. In doing this we in return expect squad members to allocate their time accordingly and be able to attend. Welcome to the Team and all the best for your 2015 sailing season. Payment must be made prior to the term commencing to secure a spot within the Squad. Sailors are encouraged to attend all training sessions to maximize benefits gained, there will be no payment exceptions or exceptions made to those who only attend a few sessions. The squad agreement commences at the start of every term, sailors are not obligated to a whole year’s commitment, instead we are flexible to term by term registration however we recommend the full 4 term registration to gain maximum benefits. Due Date for Payment: Term 1 Friday the 6th of February 2015 Term 2 Friday the 17th of April 2015 Term 3 Friday the 10th of July 2015 Term 4 Friday the 2nd of October 2015 Cost: $230.00 per term per sailor $780.00 per annum Inclusions: Training to all specific fleet sessions for each week of the school term Training will be on regardless of weather conditions as coaches will adjust lesson plans (please see training schedule on page 6) Open self-training sessions for all fleets with a roaming coach on water to provide minor support (please see training schedule on page 6) Squad Uniform (please see page 12) Training Book and rules book Parent information BBQs each term (please see page 5) Opportunity to be selected to become a part of the SYC Mentor Program SYC Squad Team photo each term Guest Coaches training sessions Eligibility to apply for club funding (conditions apply please see application form) 4 | P a g e Optional Extras: Private Training Sessions: It is recommended that private training sessions are one-on-one however we can incorporate up to 3 sailors per group should parents wish to split the cost. o $60.00 per hour minimum two hours (own sailing gear and boat) o $70.00 per hour minimum two hours (using club boats and gear) Squad camps on during school holidays twice a year (Please see page 11) Requirements: Southport Yacht Club membership Participate in club racing Attend training sessions Sign in and sign out of all training sessions Attend rules nights Take part in Sail Past Be present at Sailing Presentation Bring one family member or friend to one Funsail session per term (complementary- pass included in pack) Assist in Discover Sail Days Abide by the SYC Code of Conduct. Breach of the code may result in permanent dismissal from squad Parent Information BBQs: We will be holding Parent Information Night BBQs once a term as an opportunity for everyone to get together and discuss the term’s training plans. It is highly recommended that parents attend as these will be great opportunities to stay well informed of what is going on within the Squad. I am able to reconfigure Sailing Squad after sailing 49er for the theories and techniques that I learn through the only 5 months. Winning U21 Junior Australian Sailing Program and pass on to the sailors that I World Championship in the 49er class coach. Sharing my own sailing knowledge with the juniors I (2014) believe will be an important step up to push them towards Representing Australia at the Youth their next level of their sailing. The Organising Authority is the Federation Française de Voile. This regatta is part of the 2010 ISAF Sailing World Cup (SWC) series as described in Appendix A. 1 Rules 1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS). 1.2 Appendix P, Special Procedures for Rule 42, will apply. 1.3 For Medal Races ISAF Addendum Q, available on the ISAF website (www.sailing.org ), will apply and changes a number of racing rules. The version that is current when the regatta begins will appear in full in the Sailing Instructions. 1.4 Rules for the Handling of Boats will apply for the Women's Keelboat Match Racing event, including practice racing, and will appear in full in the Sailing Instructions.     A brief history of the Finn Class at the Olympic Games Par Robert Reaves Olympics The Finn made its first appearance at the Olympic Games back in 1952. That year Paul Elvstrøm won the second of his four Gold medals on his way to setting a record that has, so far, stood for 52 years. More than five decades later Ben Ainslie stands on the brink of breaking that record, as he has broken so many other records in his 10 years in the class. If he does it would be one of the defining moments of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Finn is the oldest dinghy class that is being used at the 2012 Olympic Games. In fact this year marks its 60th anniversary of includion at the Games and is the 16th time it will be used. Over those 60 years it has modernised and embraced new technologies but is fundamentally the same design. But to go back to the very beginning... The Olympics in 1952 were assigned to Helsinki, Finland and the Finish Yachting Association, who had been assigned the job of selecting the class for the Monotype, ran a competition for a new boat designed specifically for the Olympics which could also be used for sailing competitions in Scandinavia. The Finn was selected from a design entered by Swedish Olympian Rickard Sarby. Paul Elvstrøm swept the board to win by nearly 3,000 points from Charles Currey of Great Britain, who took Silver. Elvstrøm won four of the seven races in a fleet of 28 boats and set a standard which has never been equalled.

    THE INTERNATIONAL LASER CLASS Anna Tunicliffe USA ROLEX MIAMI OCR 23 - 27 January, Biscayne Bay, USA US SAILING’s ISAF Grade 1 Rolex Miami OCR was regarded as the biggest in a decade. 610 sailors representing 40 nations competed aboard 406 boats. Only twice in the event’s 17 year history has it been bigger and that was in the year of and prior to the ‘home-court’ 1996 Olympic Games in Savannah. Included in the ranks of Olympic medallists and class veterans were no less than seven reigning World Champions. Opening ceremonies launched the regatta and hosted five subsequent days of racing. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded after a final medal race. USA’s Anna Tunnicliffe gave an outstanding performance in the Laser Radial class to take the gold medal and the US SAILING’s Golden Torch Award. Laser Radial World Champion Paige Railey took the silver medal ahead of Jennifer Spalding’s bronze. Paul Goodison GBR Paul Goodison secured the gold in the Medal Race for the Lasers by holding off Felix Pruvot, who took silver. He had hoped to have a point spread great enough to secure his victory before the finals but found the regatta’s light shifty winds on day three to be an obstacle. The Laser fleet was the largest at the regatta and split into gold and silver fleets after a two day qualifying series.
