My research projects focus on violence against gay Black and/or Latino men, sexual and gender minorities, and the effects of COVID-19 on persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Acknowledging those who are most marginalized and not represented in extant research, I focus on illuminating the experiences of Latino and Black men who have sex with men (MSM), immigrants and people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Research focused on addressing medical care, including HIV treatment and adherence for gay male sexual assault survivors of color. Conduct research focused on improving health outcomes among gay Black and Latino men and for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) HIV who contracted COVID-19. Fellowships and Internships Fellow Career Education and Enhancement for Health Care Research Diversity Program July 2020 – Present Selected as a CEED Scholar at the Institute for Clinical Research Education in the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, at the University of Pittsburgh. The CEED Program is a career development fellowship for doctors from underrepresented racial/ethnic minority groups in the health sciences. The fellowship provides scholars with a solid foundation for successful career in a collegial environment through skill training, networking, coursework, and mentoring from scholars of color. Fellow SAMHSA CSWE Doctoral Minority Fellowship ($50, 400) August 2017- 2019 National highly competitive fellowship that provides funding to help increase the number of culturally competent racial/ethnic doctoral student researchers and leaders to conduct research to help reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes of racially and ethnically diverse populations in the public and nonprofit sectors. Funding was provided by the Center for Mental Health Services, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, and the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment by SAMHSA. Intern Junior Researcher United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) ($500) June - September 2017 Selected an intern for The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as part of the Gender Equality in Public Administration Team with the Ford Institute for Human Security. Conducted research on specific countries in Latin America on best proxy indicators to measure LGBTI inclusion, with specific consideration to policies and laws in these countries. Relayed recommendations and findings to the United Nations. Fellow Pittsburgh, PA Albert Schweitzer Fellowship ($2,000) April 2017 – May 2018 Conducted a relationship support group for Black and Latino gay men. This support group provided gay men of color with psycho-social education regarding various topics concerning romantic relationships. Topics included: interracial dating, intimate partner violence, infidelity, coping with breakups, improving communication skills, coping with racism and homophobia and safe sex practices. The project focused on helping these men develop skills in recognizing healthy relationship dynamics and partners. Funded Research Doctoral Graduate Fellowship ($6,600) May 2019 Funded by: School of Social Work, University of Pittsburgh Provided to support publications from my dissertation. Kevin Corcoran Endowed Dissertation Fund Award ($800) December 2018 Funded by: School of Social Work, University of Pittsburgh Annual award given to one student to help fund their dissertation, which exemplifies the profession. Pre-Doctoral Fellowship ($6,500) May 2018 Funded by: School of Social Work, University of Pittsburgh Provided to support the preparation and completion of my dissertation. My dissertation funding was used to pay for travel expenses, incentives for participants and recording devices.
