Bonton did his damage from all around the court but was nails from the line in Pac-12 play setting a program record for free throw excellence at 88.6% (62-70) breaking David Sanders’ 1988 record of 88.3% (53-60). COUGS IN SEARCH OF SCORING With the new year comes new challenges as a young Cougar squad looks to find its way after having to replace seven letterwinners and three starters from a season ago. Returning for the Cougs return just over 1K total points (1,034) or just over 46% of its scoring from a season ago. Senior Isaac Bonton returns as the Cougs’ top scorer having averaged 15.3 ppg in his first year. Bonton finished the year with 18-straight double-digit scoring games including all 15 Pac-12 contests he competed in (25 overall). Noah Williams and Tony Miller finished the year with nine double-digit scoring endeavors apiece while Aljaz Kunz added four and Volodymyr Markovetskyy added one. BIG SHOES TO FILL In addition to the scoring production lost from last season’s team, the young Cougs have big shoes to fill across the board heading into 2020-21. In total, the Cougs lost over 3,386 minutes (52.5 % of team’s minutes), 571 rebounds (49% of team’s rebounds), 169 assists (45% of team’s assists), 43 blocks (50.5% of team’s blocks), and 114 steals (52.3% of team’s steals). ABOUT THE COUGARS Washington State men’s basketball returns eight players (seven with playing experience) including two starters. In addition, the Cougs bring in seven new players (one out indefinitely due to injury). After losing three starters including All-Pac-12 First Teamer and leading scorer CJ Elleby, the Cougs will look to preseason All-Pac-12 honoree Isaac Bonton to lead the way offensively in 2020-21. Bonton finished his first year at WSU scoring 15.3 ppg, ranking 11th in the conference. He enters the year with the 5th best scoring average among returning Pac-12 players. Tony Miller, the lone other senior on the squad next to Bonton, showed his brilliance late in the season after battling injury for much of his junior campaign. The experienced big averaged 7.7 ppg and 3.3 rpg in his first year at WSU. However, in the final month he averaged 10.4 ppg while shooting 60% from the floor. Junior Aljaz Kunz, the longest tenured Coug at three years, returns looking to make the leap in efficiency after starting much of the year as a sophomore. He finished his second year averaging 4.5 ppg and 3.2 rpg. The last upperclassmen for the Cougs is transfer Myles Fitzgerald-Warren out of Collin College after beginning his career at Fresno State. The sophomores enter the year experienced and ready to contribute after seeing substantial time late in 2019-20. Noah Williams is on many preseason lists to be a breakout candidate in 2020 after averaging just over 21 mpg last year while starting 13 games as a freshman. Williams proved no stage was too big leading the Cougs to a pair of wins over Washington including hitting a pair of clutch free-throws to ice the game in Seattle last February. DJ Rodman and Ryan Rapp return bigger and stronger than a year before. Rodman led the team in four-point plays a season ago and has improved his outside shooting over the summer. Rapp will look to contend for the back-up point guard role to spell Bonton throughout the year. The improvement of Volodymyr Markovetskyy, the Cougs’ 7-1 center, will play a big role in how the Cougs season goes in the uber-big Pac-12 this season. The young giant showed flashes of brilliance at the end of last season including an 11 pt, 10 rbd, double-double at Arizona State in the regular season finale. Redshirt-freshman Brandton Chatfield will be in the mix in the front court as well standing at 6-10 having spent a season learning in 2019-20. The Cougs’ five healthy freshmen are ready to contribute early as the class ranked #32 overall and #4 in the Pac-12 as the highest ranked class in program history. Four of the freshmen bring international experience to the Cougs while TJ Bamba played all over the country throughout his high school career and Dishon Jackson was rated a four-star center out of Vallejo, Calif. Andrej Jakimovski has spent his development playing against pro-level players across Europe while Efe Abogidi trained at he NBA Academy in Australia the last two years. Carlos Rosario came to the US just two years ago to play high school basketball after growing up in the Dominican Republic while Jefferson Koulibaly was the All-Canadian Player of the Year as a senior. KOULIBALY, MILLER OUT INDEFINITELY Freshman point guard Jefferson Koulibaly’s debut will have to wait as the Canadian ball-handler suffered an arm injury that will sideline him indefinitely. Koulibaly was the Province Player of the Year and All-Canadian Player of the Year after leading the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association in scoring at 27.9 points while also averaging 10.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2.5 steals per game as a senior. Senior Tony Miller joined the freshman on the sidelines with a leg injury that will keep him out of the lineup for an undetermined amount of time after playing in the season-opener for the Cougs. Last year, Miller was the Cougs’ most efficient player and averaged 7.7 ppg and 3.3 rpg in his first year at WSU COUGS IN 2019-20 The Cougars ended the 16-16 and 6-12 in Pac-12 play, surpassing both win totals from a season ago. The 16 wins were the most since the 2011-12 season and the first time the team has finished a season .500 or better since the same season. In addition, the Cougs won their final game of the year for the first time since the 2001-02 season. Under new head coach Kyle Smith the Cougs picked up the first win of the year, Nov. 7 in an 85-54 win over Seattle U. The 31-point win marked the largest margin of victory in the modern era for a Coug head coach in his debut. Throughout the year the Cougs came up with a handful of big wins including taking down #8 Oregon, 72-61, while splitting the season series with UCLA, both games going to overtime. The OT win over UCLA was the first Pac-12 win for the Cougs’ new head coach. It also marked the first time since the 1992-93 season the Cougs defeated Oregon, Oregon State, and UCLA all in the same season. Against their rivals, the Cougs came up big, sweeping the Huskies for the first time since 2017. At home against UW, the Cougs defeated UW, 79-67, in his first Apple Cup contest, Feb. 9, 2020, the second-largest margin of victory over the Huskies in over a decade. ELLEBY GOES 46TH TO PORTLAND With the 46th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, the Portland Trailblazers selected Washington State men’s basketball standout CJ Elleby. Elleby becomes the first under-classman in Cougar basketball history to be selected in the NBA Draft and the first WSU player selected in the draft since all-time great Klay Thompson was picked No. 11 overall in 2011. Overall, Elleby ended his two-year career at WSU 32nd all-time in scoring while averaging 16.6 ppg, the fifth-best scoring average in Coug history. From behind the arc, Elleby finished his career 18th overall with 127 made three-pointers while hitting at a 41.4% clip, the fifth-best shooting percentage in program history. While finishing outside of the top-20 for overall rebounds, the 6-6 wing grabbed 7.5 rebounds per contest, a mark which placed him 12th on the Cougs’ rebounding list. Defensively, Elleby ended his second year just inside the top-20 for career steals, grabbing 89 in just 64 games to average 1.4 per contest, a mark which put him 13th on the Cougs’ all-time average list. PACIFIC NORTHWEST PERFECTION For the first time since the 2007-08 season the Cougs reigned supreme in the Pacific Northwest sweeping UW, Oregon, and Oregon State. Additionally, the Cougs added wins over Seattle, Idaho, and Idaho State for good measure in non-conference play while beating Eastern Washington and Montana in closed scrimmages prior to the start of the regular season. WASHINGTON STATE IN SEASON OPENERS With their win over TSU Wednesday night, the Cougars are 98-22 all-time in season openers and 59-8 when opening the season at home. WSU has won every season opener when opening at Beasley Coliseum and its last 25 season openers at home. The Cougars have won 31-consecutive Beasley Coliseum openers (not necessarily the first game of the season, but the first at home), with their last loss coming to BYU, Dec. 3, 1987. PRESEASON POLL The Cougars were picked to finish 11th in the preseason coaches poll. UCLA was picked as the preseason conference favorite just ahead of Arizona State and Oregon.
